This thread is where you can chat about all things PIFM, ask questions and once books have been read, review your selected reads. A complete free for all.

PLEASE NOTE:

PIFM is meant to be FUN and not to be taken seriously. I would appreciate it if all participants just chilled and not get worked up about voting, who votes, who doesn't, etc. Please bear in mind that some will just want to vote, many don't come on everyday and most of us have time constraints. I just want a relaxed approach to it all and for you all to just enjoy the process! I'd really appreciate your courtesy in this matter. Many thanks.

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments I'd love to hear anyone's recommendations of books that have come out in the last couple years as well :)

The Choice awards from last year threw me off, I had only read one of them I think.

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments I rarely read such new books, but found three I read recently and liked enough to recommend (all three are very short):
My Evil Mother: A Short Story
erotic romance: (view spoiler)

Here some that caught my eye and have an average rating of at least 4.0 on GR (I only added stand-alone or #1 in series - if you don't mind reading series books out of order I can add those as well, if you want):
The Puma Years (is currently even free)
The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times
Undone
The Frequency of Us
The Things We Leave Unfinished
A Hot Flash of Homicide
The Pilot's Daughter
Aloha Alibi
A Not So Meet Cute
Red Barchetta
Backrush
Under the Bus
Music Man a bit over two years but set in Delaware (in case you need something for a 50 states challenge)

I'm not sure if you like Christian fiction, so I set them to the end in case you'd prefer to skip those:
The Paris Betrayal
Sweet Right Here
Blue Christmas

Sophie | 1126 comments Not sure if you're a) into autobiographies or b) into audiobooks but if you are, I can highly recommend Windswept & Interesting: My Autobiography by the comedian Billy Connolly. His narration is brilliant and genuinely had me laughing out loud.

Other books I can recommend are:
Ariadne
The Institute
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires
The Other Girl

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Thank you all! I haven't heard of most of these.

I do really like comedian autobiographies and audiobooks when its the author especially. I will check it out!

I am trying to listen to more audiobooks on my commute to work.

A really good audiobook done by a comedian is a memoir by Carol Burnett: In Such Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox

Sophie | 1126 comments I tend to listen to Audiobooks when I'm at home or if I'm alone in the office rather than on my commute. I like keeping my head down when I'm travelling to work on the tube by actually reading a book (often while listening to a podcast or music for complete oblivion to my surroundings haha)

I used to ride a vanpool and later a bus to work, and I considered a physical book a buffer between me and people I didn't want to talk to.

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments I would feel the same! Except I am driving. I live in the country so we don't really have public transit :(

I will try that Kirsten, thanks. I don't know much about her actually.

message 11: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis I like audio books too. My library is getting more and more titles so it is convenient too for a popular book.
I mostly listen while I walk the dog or I am cooking.

message 12: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 1126 comments I listen while cooking too - although I've found myself listening to audiobooks more and more at weekends when I'm doing housework too seeing as my daughter is reaching the age where she lives in her room now and only emerges for meals.

Audiobooks are relatively new to me but I'm starting to understand what my dad meant when he told me the narrator can make or break an audiobook.

So true. I listened to one where you could hear the narrator inhaling. Really put me off.

They have gotten really good with audiobooks now. Some are complete productions. Some are more performances than narration. In fact, Lincoln in the Bardo hit a record 166 voices in the narration!

message 14: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments It's so true, there are some really good narrators too!

Vicki Willis I am planning on reading my April pick in June and getting back into the game for July.
There are only 11 more days of school and then I am free for the summer!

My April pick is Secrets in the Shadows Secrets in the Shadows (Shadows Collection/Leroy's Sins, #1) by T.L. Haddix which I have had on my TBR since 2014!

message 16: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I finished The Devil’s Code by John Sanford. It is different from his Prey series and features tech and satellite science. I would enjoy reading another in this series. Although some of the tech is a little dated I did learn info about satellites that was interesting.

message 17: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments That's exciting Vicki!! Any big summer plans?

message 18: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis We are going up to Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon this year. We decided not to take a big, far trip bc of gas prices (it is over $6 a gallon in my area). The motorhome only gets about 10 mpg.

message 19: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments Geez….Vickie. I was complaining when our gas hit $4.35 a gallon. We are going to have a 400 mile yard sale in Kentucky. I have never been before but a friend gave me a heads up. It is going to be booths in a collection of parks across the Commonwealth (State). Sounds interesting.

message 20: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis That DOES sound interesting. Let me know how it goes.

message 21: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I got a notice that the friends of the main library are having a super book sale. Fill a bag for $5. Also a church bake sale included. I just love living in a small town.

message 22: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I always try and check yard sales in my neighborhood. I got lucky one day and found Fingersmith.

Hey Cat,
If you go to the thread called JUNE READ - you will see the list other people have posted.
Then you go to JUNE SELECTION and post on one thread what you think each person should read.
It looks like you have a post on each thread, but you can put your book choices for others in the selection thread.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sue | 131 comments Sorry all, I seem to have lost May and didn’t even manage to start my May read let alone post a list for June. I’m away for a week in Austria from tomorrow so hopefully I’ll get chance to read a bit:- will come back to PIFM in July.

I just added "Secrets in the Shadows" to my WTR list. I will say, I'm not a fan of the cover, it just looks like sex would overtake the M/T of it, but I'll give it a whirl!

How did the 400 mile sale go?

Honestly Jess, when I picked up that book a long time ago, I was thinking it was a different book with the same title. So, who knows?
I am going to give it a go and let you know!
