Do you like portal fantasies, Mark? The Stiger series by Marc Alan Edelheit is a good one. It's more of a portal military fantasy.

what about books that were originally indies like The Martian by Andy Weir

Mark Lawrence (who I actually think is an author here) manages the Self Published Fantasy Blog Off each year starting around June or so.

I enjoy reading through the various blog posts about the indie titles and think they do a good job overall. Some really neat sounding stuff in there.

My favorites:
Fantasy:
Dragon Fate - series 4/4 complete
The White Owl - series at 1/3, book two in progress, unfortunately, the author is a bit stuck working on book two - I'm his beta swap, so I know :D
Path of a Novice - series at 5/6, last book coming later this year

SF:
Warrior Wench - first trilogy complete, sequel trilogy at 1/3

SFF:
The Story of Raiya - 4 books (5th coming soon) in loose continuity
