message 56: by Alishaa (new)

Alishaa (princessaaliahila26) | 12 comments I feel slow since seeing that many participants read 50-200 books a year 😂 but I just do not have the time plus I have adhd so picking up books can be difficult and knowing where I am can get tricky, but if I love the book then ooff will not put it down! I love reading so it’s dangerous lol!
I read about 5-7 books a year, I have read 3 so far and aim to read about 10.
I would like to participate in a team please.
But I don’t mind.
Thanks :)

laurel [the suspected bibliophile] (laurelthereader) UPDATED

So far we have 36 folks signed up for a team!

Welcome newcomers (holy cow there are a lot of you) and veterans to the games!

Note 1: It really, truly does not matter if you only read 1 or 200 books in the games. There are other ways to participate (cheerleading, strategy/organization, etc)—all that is asked is that you participate. Having ghost team members is not fun for anyone!

Note 2: If your profile is set to private, I will not sign you up for a team. Please consider either making your profile public from now until June 30th, or friending the mods so we can see your reviews (we will not snoop, we only look at the reviews linked to your completion post).

If your profile is public/all Goodreads members can see it, you don't have to friend us unless you want to.

Note 3: I find that we often get more overall participation if the teams are evenly stacked, which is why I do my best to try to balance the teams in the beginning.

With all that being said, the point of these games is to have fun.

Have fun, enjoy yourselves, participate, and don't sweat it.

Sign-ups close on the 25th

I'll have the rosters out later today (tomorrow at the very latest).

Thank you all for signing up!

message 81: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 1547 comments @Laurel, thanks for all the work and fun set up!! I'm sure the workload is massive but it is appreciated!!

Not that sign ups are done, I have a couple of questions on #ownvoices. How are you or we to verify?

Some are obvious but others are tricky. For example, I believe that The Love Hypothesis and Deathless Divide have asexual character representation but how do I know about the authors?

Will you accept non-fiction memoirs for #ownvoices? Such as Autism in Heels: The Untold Story of a Female Life on the Spectrum for #ownvoices neurodivergent?

Thank you in advance!!

Of course! It does take a lot of time to set up, but less now that I have great templates.

The #ownvoices question is very good--I'd say that if a cursory google search on it doesn't reveal anything or the book summary/author bio (either GR or Twitter) doesn't say, then it's best to consider the book not #ownvoices. If you (or anyone else reading this) has a question about it, I can check to see if I can find anything.

I will absolutely accept non-fiction memoirs as #ownvoices :)

You're on Team 5—I had you on the list but your name isn't showing up for some reason! (I thought I messed up but for once it wasn't me)

Sorry about the confusion!

message 88: by Helen (new)

Helen Fincham | 7 comments Hi Laurel,

As usual, thank you for arranging these events.

I thought I wasn't going to be able to take part, but now I have COVID so I can aha.
I know the 25th was the deadline, but I was wondering if any group is missing a few 'books per year', I usually read 23-26 a year-ish.

All the best, Helen

Oh no! Sorry about getting sick.

Unfortunately the teams have been made and they are all pretty even. I can add you as a soloist and if there are gaps in the points/people who aren't participating on the teams by the third week of May, I can you to a group then if the group agrees.

Becca | 20 comments I'd like to join as a soloist!

I'm still trying to get myself out of a slump, so it's definitely better this way. Don't want to let anyone down just in case :)

Can't wait!

laurel [the suspected bibliophile] (laurelthereader) SPRING FLING STARTS MAY 1ST

I'm so happy so see you all talking and coordinating plans! You are all off to a great start. I do have a couple of notes/best practices before we kick off.

1. To see everything in the thread, use your internet browser not the app. The phone app cuts off comments.

2. Aless has set up discord channels for each team for your use. If you're not a discord fan, I recommend creating an Instagram chat group with all of your teammates for faster communication.
https://discord.com/invite/3hBXPyt2Fa

3. Buddy and Group Reads:

Like last year, we are expecting participation beyond "the book was good" for Buddy and Group reads to count. Mina puts a lot of time into creating the threads.

With that being said, anyone can participate in an open Buddy Read without being added as a participant. If there is no meaningful participation, it will not count.

If your buddy is not participating, that's okay, it happens. Continue to comment in the Buddy Read thread. We will count it for the participating member.

Lastly, I'm so happy that you all are requesting BRs to be made—but please don't expect them to be instantaneous. Please allow up to three days for the threads to be created.

If you have any questions, please continue to address them in the Sign Up thread—it's easier for us to catch that way.

Thank you all for joining us for Spring Fling—I hope you all have a lot of fun!

It's not too late for soloists!

message 99: by Aliana (last edited May 02, 2022 05:09AM) (new)

Aliana (aliananana) | 88 comments I've a question regarding buddy reads: if me and another teammate decide to buddy read a book, do we need to nominate it in the monthly buddy read thread? Or would it be alright if we discuss it between ourselves (say in the Discord server as a thread) and mark it as 'buddy read' in the spreadsheet?

message 100: by mina, Group/Buddy Reads Procrastinator (new)

mina | 2951 comments Mod
@Alina
Hi. Yes, it needs to be nominated in the nomination thread, because that way it's easier for us to track things. You, or whoever wants a thread, writes there and tells me what book and with whom they are reading it, and if they have a schedule they post it or tell me over how many days they want to read the book and the number of chapters.

You don't have to post anything now, because I saw the msg with the schedule for Where the Crawdads Sing you are going to read with Robyn.. if that question was for that book 😅
