Good plan.
Maybe there will be an adventure there!

Nice. We took a cross country road trip when my kids were little - some of my favorite memories are from that trip. I don't think we hit Oklahoma though. I think you're supposed to eat steak there?

Have you read books from the different states? I have seen that as a challenge before, and I've thought that was a good way to see things too - through books and all.

Just not as tasty as traveling around and sampling things as you go :)

How was biking through Mississippi and Louisiana? I've never been there. There is a southern literary book tour that goes through Mississippi and Alabama that I'd like to do some time. I've never been to Alabama either.

I'm such a northerner, I'm afraid I'd spontaneously combust in the heat.

Nanci | 2567 comments Melissa,
We biked on the Natchez Trace Trail in Mississippi. We also biked around Laurel, Miss. We both enjoy the TV show Hometown on HGTV and biking there was wonderful. In Louisiana we biked around New Orleans area. This was in October, so we did not burst into flames! The literary book tour sounds awesome! I'm currently doing the challenge to read a book from every state, which is a fun way to experience the states.

Mary, we lived in Hanover, NH very near to the Connecticut River. We also could kayak or ride bikes in one day in both New Hampshire and Vermont. Wonderful that you had the opportunity to live in many different states.

Covid really put a dampener on our overseas travel, but also encouraged us to travel extensively in the US. We rented a small RV and drove out west to visit many of the national parks. One of my favorite all time trips and fairly reasonable in price. We both worked hard and pinched pennies, so we would be able to travel in retirement. It's one of our favorite things to do!

No need to lol

I'm re-reading Rolling in the Deep for the mermaid one. Has mermaid on the text, has 123pages and is spent in a boat, so we can do 3 tasks.

Unless you really want to read that book :p

message 459: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I've been busy with kitten stuff the past few days as the two little ones are ready to be weaned and litter trained. They are also getting good at climbing things so I've been a climbing frame and a pillow, but I'm not complaining. One of them has been pretty sick and is having a hard time feeding from mama cat so I've been bottle feeding him for a good few days. I've learnt so much from having all these kittens.
It has meant that I haven't got as far as I would have liked in some of my books, but I will try and finish Catch-22 later today. I'm currently pinned to the sofa with tiny bodies so I will take the opportunity to read some of that Wildfire BOM book. I doubt I will finish it, but it depends on how long this fluffy babies sleep for.

The temperature is pretty mild here in Norway so you could get away with the long clothes. I'd even go as far as recommend it. Their tiny claws are definitely ouchy especially when they are climbing up me or think I have milk. They really are growing up quick, just a week or so ago they could barely walk and now they are running after me. They are a month old now so I'm not sure how much longer we will have them. Should be at least 2 more weeks but hopefully a bit longer.

I'm close to finishing Catch-22. I forgot how late the challenges start with my location, but it has been useful because it's given me a chance to work on the book. I should finish it within the next 2 hours. I'll list all the tasks it will work for on the SS.

For most of Europe, it's at 10pm. For Portugal and UK it's at 9pm.

In roughly 3 mins, all the books finished will count towards the mini :)

Catch-22 also covers two tasks for the Chimera so it could be worth saving in case we get that. It depends how desperate we are to complete the Boar quickly. I don't mind either way, I'm just throwing the idea out there.

Eni | 2349 comments i switched a couple of books around and we vanquished the boar!!!

Our new monster:

Minotaur

The Minotaur has been seen on your lands, frolicking through fields and enjoying freedom for the first time. If you manage to defeat him, you will spend the rest of your life wondering how you survived. Don't forget some rope!

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book 800 pages or longer.
2.) Read a book where the MC gets lost.
3.) Read a book with a map in it.
4.) character described as "bull-headed" or "hard-headed".
5.) Read a book with a Goodreads rating of 4.0 or higher.

Eni | 2349 comments I still have a lot to check on the spreadsheet, but i have to leave the house soon and i won't be back until dinner, so it will have to wait until later today :|

message 486: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments My current book It fits at least three of those tasks for the Minotaur. But as it is such a long book, it will still take me a good couple of days to finish it. I'm listening to it as an audiobook and even with a faster speed it will still take me about 20 hours of listening to finish it.
I've added it to the monsters sheet, but of course if people finish books that cover the tasks before I do then feel free to swap it out.
Also, if someone is able to look up if a character is described as "bull-headed" or "hard-headed" if they happen to have an ebook version of the book. I'm trying to listen out for the description, but might miss it. There are so many characters in the book, one of them may be described at one of those.

Nanci | 2567 comments I finished The Broken Girls on June 15. Right now it's in place for T13 for Harpies. It also fits T23 for Sphinx, as the MC was trying to solve the murder of her sister. If you want to move it, Eni, that would complete another monster.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments That rope on cover one could be tricky. There probably isn't a list for "rope on cover". Maybe a western with a horse? I'll look at some Western romances.

In the meantime, I'm going to read the book I have that works for thief. There's a good chance of royal character and chase for that book.

I finished the BOM Witch's Heart and once there's been enough daily questions to answer, I do a post with links to my answers.

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I'm looking for books with a rope on the cover. So far I have found Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson which has ropes from a ship visible. I've read it before, but I could re-read it pretty quick as it is pretty short. It is also on Audible plus if anyone else is subscribed and was interested.
I'm going to keep looking and see if I can find anything else.

message 495: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments So I have found Six Years in the Hanoi Hilton An Extraordinary Story of Courage and Survival in Vietnam by Amy Shively Hawk on Audible plus. It's 5 and a half hours long, but as I listen to things at a faster speed it would take me less than that. It doesn't seem like it will be a very cheerful book at all, but I like a bit of history so I would be willing to listen to it.

It is very late where I am so I won't start it tonight, but unless anyone else finds something suitable before I wake up, I will listen to it tomorrow.

It's great fun. I really like Sookie Stackhouse now. The first two books were just ok for me. Not sure if that was due to watching True Blood or a new to me series and author thing. But by book three I was hooked.
Sorry it took me so long to reply but I came down with a cold at the weekend, and though it's still lingering, I've only started to feel better in the last couple of days. I slept for three days straight. Ugh, it's been so long since I've been ill with a bug, it was a real shock to the system.

Oof. That looks tough. I'm reading Becoming Kareem Growing Up On and Off the Court by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for a unit I'm planning for next year on biographies. It has the rope of the basketball net on the front! I could finish it tomorrow.

Still reading Wild Life Dispatches from a Childhood of Baboons and Button-Downs by Keena Roberts for the Africa book. I am loving it, so am reading it a little more slowly. Hope to finish it this weekend though.
