message 1110: by Heather (last edited Jul 15, 2022 09:25AM) (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments This mini-challenge has been really fun. I think The Stand was my final contribution though. I doubt I could finish another book today :)

Also sorry for not responding to the messages related to what prompts it would fit, I was too busy reading as it was quite a big book and I wanted to finish it before the end of the mini.

Melissa | 1895 comments Last one?

Centaur

The Centaurs have over run the forests on your lands and are taking no prisoners (sorry Prometheus). In a new category of moderately hard to defeat, they shouldn't be underestimated. In fact, in most realms they are known for their intelligence, so plan your attack well.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 300 and 349 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book with a forest on the cover.
3.) Read a book where a character is an archer.
4.) Read a book with MPG Classics.
5.) Read a book where a character is considered wise.

Melissa | 1895 comments Last one!
(I think they're waiting in the car for me....

Drop Bear

The Drop Bear has been rumored to inhabit your wooded lands. They may look cute and cuddly but beware they are very hard to defeat and come out of nowhere. Just remember, all wildlife from Australia is apparently out to kill you, no matter how cute.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 500 and 650 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book set in Australia.
3.) Read a book with a surprise twist (your interpretation).
4.) Read a book with a carnivore on the cover (make sure it's not an omnivore!).
5.) Read a book with author initials found in VEGEMiTE.

Eni | 2349 comments Stacey would you mind putting "A curse so dark and lonely" on your challenge shelf please?

message 1116: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments Well, I won't be able to finish my Australia book, so I guess I'm done for this challenge. Good thing they carry over as long as I don't finish before the start of the new game!

It's ok. you did great!

Also is it me or do we only have 3 monsters open at this point?

message 1118: by Eni (new)

Eni | 2349 comments Cretan Bull

The Cretan Bull has been spotted running amok across your lands destroying defensive walls and crops alike. He is hard to defeat and really should of been sacrificed as the gods intended. Also, not opposed to participating in some marriage infidelity. So there may be some surprises popping out 9 months from now.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 350 and 450 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book with a white cover.
3.) Read a book where something physical is destroyed (e.g., building burning down and not a relationship being ruined).
4.) Read a book where the MC ignores important advice.
5.) Read a book with a 7 in the page count.

message 1119: by Eni (new)

Eni | 2349 comments Penanggalan

The Penanggalan has been hunting on your city streets. They may not be well known in this part of the world, but that doesn't make them less deadly. Learn what you can about them before planning your attack, it may be what saves your life.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book 800 pages or longer.
2.) Read a book set in Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timore-Leste, Vietnam).
3.) Read a book where author identifies as female.
4.) Read a book with MPG Paranormal.
5.) Read a book with the word "vinegar" in text.

message 1124: by Eni (new)

Eni | 2349 comments There is a new tab on the planning spreadsheet for the new mini.

I also split the books in two tabs. The Used Books tab which is for captains to put the books in after we put them in the official spreadsheet and the Books tab, which anyone can edit and it only has the non read books (for now) and works the same as it always has worked, except it won't have all of the older books. Sorry for not making something like this sooner. I know some of you requested something like this :(

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments It looks like we need Contemporary, Paranormal, Non Fiction and Science Fiction books for Warships. I'm have a book that will fit 3 of those that I'll go ahead and add, but can adjust as needed.

message 1127: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Back from camping 🏕! Lots of deer flies! But good canoeing with family.
Looking at our new mini. Should we just keep plunking books on the book tab until something looks good?

message 1128: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments I think this one will need a store of books so we can make coherent stories. Bank them then sort it out closer to the end, like fitting a puzzle.

message 1129: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Good idea. This will be fun. I’ll look for creative titles. We can use just part of a title?

Glad you had fun, Melissa, but ugh, those deer fly! They bite so bad and then leave a sore behind. I was at my sister's in Kiawah, SC on a run once and all was well until I tore my gastrox and couldn't run, so was having to limp/walk. At the slower pace they all started biting me like crazy and I just had to keep limping the 5 miles back to her house. Totally miserable!

I can't even imagine! We just walked from the day use area to our campsite, maybe 1/2 mile, and I felt like I was going crazy. 5 miles!

message 1133: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments They are so vicious! Walking 1/2 mile is still miserable. I also thought I would go crazy! It was early morning, so hardly anyone was driving by. I did have a few cars go by, but they just kept going when I signaled for them to stop. They probably thought I was crazy waving my arms all around my body and swatting madly! LOL

If it's anything like past "build your story" challenges I would say it's the whole title

message 1135: by Mary X (last edited Jul 18, 2022 06:21AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I have various library books that I put aside for monster tasks. So now I'm just trying to get caught up on those. These are my unfinished books on the spreadsheet. Hopefully some titles will help with the story thing.

message 1136: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I'm sorry I haven't been around much. I've been busy non-stop since I got back to the UK last wednesday. We went to my cousins wedding yesterday which was nice, but my boyfriend is ill so spent most of the time in the room we stayed in, but at least he made use of the room. Today and tomorrow will be the hottest it has ever been in the UK so we are all struggling with the heat. It is meant to get up to 40°c tomorrow, which I know is normal for some of you at certain times of the year, but we are not prepared for it. Most houses here do not have air conditioning so we are relying on whatever we have to keep cool.

In regards to reading... I haven't really done any. I'm not sure I will get much done this week either, but the following week I will have lots of free time so I can catch up then. I haven't had a close look at the new mini yet, but I do have a couple of books that could potentially give some good titles for us to use. I'll probably do one (maybe two) more long book before the end of the challenge too for big points.

I hope everyone had a good weekend!

message 1137: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Keely, sorry your bf has been ill. No fun at all to not feel well while being in a hot building. Glad you at least were able to attend the wedding. Hopefully they at least had some fans. I always get hot at weddings with all the dancing!

I have not been reading as much either. Thank goodness for all the mega readers on our team!

I hope your BF recovered well!

It's been hot here, but that's typical for my area. We had a wicked storm yesterday, though, that actually demolished a house and left thousands with out power!

message 1139: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Thank you both, my bf is feeling much better after resting a lot. Today is supposed to be the last day of the heatwave so it should be more bearable from tomorrow. I slept on the sofa last night as my room is a loft/attic room so not only does it get the heat from the sun on the roof, but it also gets the heat rise from the house. I let my bf have the spare bed, but it's only a single. I moved to my parents bed this morning once they had gone to work for a bit of comfort. I'll probably do the same tonight.
I hate the heat. I'd rather be cold and just wrap up.

Oof. Being in an attic in a heat wave sounds down right miserable. I hope it really does cool down now. I hope your bf is back to snuff too.

I too love the cold and the snow, but the extra light in the summer time is a good thing for me.

No worries about the reading. I've had a good reading summer. There have been a lot of good books on our audio Libby app (through the library). It's been good to get house projects done while listening to books. Got the tub caulked today. So I'm ahead of my goal. I'll be out the first 9 days of August so I think it will all balance out well :)

message 1141: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I've got my business trip to New Mexico the first week of August. But I'm going alone so I will probably still get some reading done. Not sure how much I'll be online.

message 1142: by Mary X (last edited Jul 20, 2022 05:26AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'll do my Malibu Rising Questions soon and post a link to them. I also have multiple books that I put on the spreadsheet, started and then put aside. So I'm doing clean up reading now. That will bring my books read number up. I know I'm behind.

message 1143: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments I finished answering my Malibu Rising questions the other day. Lots of good questions, but it always takes me awhile when I let them go and then answer 3 days at one time. I'm behind in my books too, Mary. I've had a much busier than normal last 2 months and August looks just as busy with a trip to Maine coming up. No complaints! We're at our home in Florida now and ready to escape the heat some!

message 1144: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I’m really looking forward to hearing about your trip, Mary!

message 1146: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Does anyone have any favorite reads from this challenge?
For a cozy mystery, I liked The Existential Thoughts of Mags Monroe - available on Kindle Unlimited.
I’ll peek through the others and see what I enjoyed.

message 1147: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Sorry, Existential Worries of…
I really liked the two Jane Harper mysteries I read, but they are a bit darker. I also really enjoyed Wild Life, which was a memoir of someone who grew up in the back country of Botswana.

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments Good Morning!

I noticed someone had put Duck, Duck, Ghost in a spot for instrument in text. I would recommend it goes in the spot for lyrics in text as I think that is harder to find...
