Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments I have a question about page numbers - I looked at the rules, but couldn't find it: which page number do you count? So far all my books have the same pg for all digital editions but Out Of Focus has a different one for each and they vary wildly. The edition I am reading doesn't have one listed but Amazon says 489 pgs. The original ebook only has 244...

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I only recently got to take over the traveling for the company. The owners (my mother and her business partner) always went. But they both lost their spouses a couple of years ago and they're both closing in on 80. Neither wants to stop working but they don't want to travel for the company any more either. So I am gladly taking up the torch. So far I have been sent to Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, New Orleans, and now Santa Fe. Next year Oklahoma City.

I regularly get sent to various parts of New England like Providence RI and Boston. But I live there so it's not that exciting. Those are frequently in winter. Mystic CT in February is not the dream weekend. Although it was at a casino.

My fingers are crossed for a Las Vegas trade show soon. It's been a few years since they hosted one there.

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I also just volunteered for warships for audiobook.

Melissa | 1895 comments Thanks Stacy, Keely, and Keli!
I'm off to the backwoods of Ontario!
I'll just be talking to the husband, dog, and the loons, no internet until August 9th. I'm bringing The Pillars of the Earth
which I think Keely read?
Sorry I can't contribute online at this point!
Mary, have a great trip!
We will need 2 more to volunteer for warships.
See you soon :)
Happy reading!

Very cool! We loved Mystic (of course had pizza at the famous restaurant!), but it was summer, so the weather was perfect! I have spent time in all the states, except for Alaska. I found something great about each one, but Newport, RI holds a special place in my heart. Just my husband and I visited there when he had some job training. We had 3 littles at home at the time, so it was extra special to have a few days for just the two of us.
Great that you can now take advantage of all the travel and how wonderful that at 80 your mom can still work!

message 1207: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments I took Travel for Trojan Wars with On the Road. I also read Pillars of the Earth many years ago!
Have a wonderful trip, Melissa!

Have a good trip Melissa!
I did read Pillars this challenge. I enjoyed it so I hope you enjoy it too.

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I'm hoping to finish a couple of longer books this week. And then I plan to read at least one more 800+ page book before the end as well as a couple of shorter ones. I'll try and help out where I can with the mini too.

message 1211: by Teresa (last edited Aug 03, 2022 08:54AM) (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments I've filled in some more on the muses tab.

Note to people adding - if you just put the task code on the books tab under mini code and fill in the qualification there, it will fill the details into the muses tab. This makes it easier to move stuff around if necessary.

I'm not sure who wants the task of making the stories? I'm not good at that at all!!!

message 1212: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Don't look at me, I'm no good at that either!

message 1213: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I added a pair of books. They are both pretty short so I should get them done soon. Won't be worth many points, but will help us out for the pair thing.

message 1215: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments Reading for this week. So finished today through Friday pm.

message 1216: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments Okay. I can get 4 books. They can repeat right? Like 3x horror, 1x family?

message 1217: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments Sure, I can do horror. All 3 if there are still spots left

message 1218: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments I will take a look at my books. I will be reading Malibu rising for botm, so we can switch later too :)

message 1219: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I can probably cover one. The easiest for me would probably be horror, but I can look on audible plus for any of the categories

message 1220: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments If Maddy is happy covering most of our spots then I can just carry on reading what I can for the mini

Stacey this is discussed in the secret group. Please remove your post. Some teams browse other threads to try to catch something 😅 I know it's the last week but please don't talk warship strategy here.

I actually came here to ask just that xD who is good with making stories? I won't have access to a computer today, but starting tomorrow I'll be on everyday making sure all of our books fill the spots and organizing everything. If we don't have any volunteers I can do it, but it might not be a very good story :p

Also, roughly a week to go girls :D I will post a link to the countdown for the end of the challenge as soon I am back home with a computer.

message 1224: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I'm not sure how many more books I'll finish. I've got a busy week planned, but should have the evenings and maybe a day or two to get some reading done. I'll definitely get the ones I've listed on the spreadsheet done and then if time allows, another couple of shorter/medium size books.

message 1225: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Just got out of the woods one day early :) (the bugs were ferocious)
I’m decent at making up stories ! I can check in more detail tomorrow or the next day. Tonight, I 😴

message 1226: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Welcome back, Melissa! Sorry the bugs drove you out a day early. Thanks for making up our story!

I added a matching pair for V7 and V8. If it doesn't work, my feelings are not hurt to have it removed. It seems like the task is fairly wide open, as I interpret it, so hoping it's ok.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I did some spreadsheet updating from my solo business trip reading. 2 worked for the pairs thing so I just went ahead and added them there. I lost 2 days just to flying which gave me a lot of reading/listening time. It's not a short flight from CT to NM.

I need to find a home for Witch Slapped but probably won't be hard. I might just read another short witch book and use it for pairs. ETA: Works for on TBR longer than a year.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Since the game is ending soon and the pts are same per page, I'm going to focus on shorter books to knock out some tasks for the bonus pts. I'm also behind so no worry on me going over my quota if I read too many shorts.

Not sure I get "setting of ball from book cover" tasks. Am I just looking for scenery like mansions, cruise ship, pretty scenery where one could believe a ball would be set?

message 1230: by Mary X (last edited Aug 11, 2022 07:11AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments It was pretty good. Productive I hope. I met some good business contacts, whether or not they will turn into customers remains to be seen.

I really liked Santa Fe. I would definitely go back to the area for a vacation.

Also I survived traveling alone to a strange place. So that's cool.

I added a two-word title book and also a new pair, I read two books set in Italy.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I just finished of the pairs section on the mini. I couldn't find another home for C'mon get happy and stay close so I connected them with "male author" being the thing they have in common. Feel free to move them if they work better elsewhere.

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments We have a book #8 (and 9) but need a #6 & #7 to use it.

Anyone have time to read one?

message 1237: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Unless I'm reading it wrong, it looks like we could start again from 1 as it says chains must be more than 4. It looks like we have enough to do 1-4 at least one more time, maybe even twice.

message 1238: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I can read a #6 instead of the book I had put for ball location cover.

Can we? we would need a #5 to do that as it says more than 4...

message 1240: by Keely (last edited Aug 12, 2022 04:54PM) (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments The rules for the mini say "Your chains must contain at least 4 books and you can use up to 16 books in this section."

The first chain we have already has 5. So we could start a new chain. I could be wrong with this, but that is the way I read it. And after having a quick look at the spreadsheet, we can do a chain 1-4 twice more with books that haven't been used for anything yet. That would mean the last chain would only be 3 long though, if we manage it. I don't know if that goes against the rules.

message 1241: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments If we reallocate the book 5, do we have 4 groups of 4?

message 1242: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments From what I can tell, we would need one more book that is #3 to make that work.
But I also feel like the last chain should be allowed to be shorter. But we would still need another #3 book or a #5.

message 1243: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I could read a 7 - I'm almost finished with my two books (Pillars and A Long Way ...)
I'm going to start working with the unplaced ones and see what kind of story I can create.
I've never done one of the stories before. Does anyone know if I can add words in between the titles? Do the titles just need to appear somewhere, or do they need to be strung together?

message 1244: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments Check the main folder, I think there is a page for us to publish our story. It should give you ideas

message 1245: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I had a sneaky look at other teams sheets and they have all done longer chains that were always 4 or longer or 4 lots of 4. We may be better doing the 4 lots of 4 in that case.

message 1246: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Teresa wrote: "Check the main folder, I think there is a page for us to publish our story. It should give you ideas"

Sounds good. There are a couple in our list that are 1s and 2s. What would we need in the case of lots of 4s?

message 1248: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I just went through and added them to the mini and we have enough!
It does mean that a lot of ones that could have been used in the stories were used though.

message 1249: by Melissa (last edited Aug 12, 2022 05:23PM) (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments It might be a push, but maybe we'd want famous people at our ball like Mary's Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford? With the setting at the White House? With lush vegetation?

message 1250: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I think a lot of us have been confused the the setting of the ball one. Personally, I've been confused about if the settings have to match or if they could just look like they could hold a ball.
