Hi Gretchen! My name is Alejandra, as a medical student I would love to be able to read your book as I think that Covid itself and what it caused among people and countries should not be forgotten. Hope this message finds you well :)

In March of 2020, it occurred to me that I was living through an historic event. Everywhere in the world, life had slowed, and people were forced to remain at home. Fear was the new norm. I only wanted to document the occurrence, to take this moment in time and pin it to the wall. My first thought was to interview residents at a nursing facility. The first places to suffer in America were nursing facilities, and I thought that an exploration of life on the front lines would be of some value. But I don’t know anybody who works in a nursing facility, and my only relative on the inside is now too old to email. The people I had access to from home, were my digital friends.
I conducted interviews with nine ordinary people who weathered the storm from the middle of March when millions lost their jobs to the inauguration in January 2021. Three Black, six white, five rich, four poor, they hail from Philadelphia, New York, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island and North Carolina. We talk about working from home, about nursing center politics, about food lines, unions and protests. We talk about loneliness, masks, sourdough bread and white privilege.
Looking back, it is easy to forget the chaos and panic of the first few days. It is easy to miss the relationship between lockdowns and protests. Mandy went out and worked until midnight at the grocery store; Ms. C. had to turn away children begging for food just to save enough for her own family. Rachel Lynn rode out the first few months in an AirBNB in the Poconos; Dr. Hedrick had a front row seat to the violent riots in Philadelphia.
