Some of you awesome creatures love to listen to your books! Let us know what you're listening to and where you find your audiobooks!

message 2: by Emilie (new)

Emilie | 49 comments So I'm a major fan of Libby (through your library), and its where I get most of my audiobooks- otherwise I use the audible library when I can. Scribd has been good to me in the past too, but I've only ever used their free trial.

Felina | 648 comments Woot!

I had started She Who Became the Sun on audio and did not like it. I'm going to try it as a dead tree and see if it suits better. Instead I'm going to start Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman for the Horror Aficionados group read for next month. I read a Buehlman a few summers ago and it was excellent. I'm looking forward to this one.

I use Audible and my library has an audiobook lending app called OverDrive.

Also, my favorite audiobook of all time is Duma Key read by John Slattery. I've listened to it several times. What's everybody else's favorite audiobook? I want to beef up my TBR.

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 409 comments I use Libby, Audible, Chirp & sometimes Hoopla for audiobooks. I read 99% of novels this way.

message 5: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I love audiobooks! I listen every day while cleaning, walking, at the gym or working in the yard. I use Audible, Libby, and Scribd. I find Libby is great for Thrillers and Mysteries while Scribd has tons of horror. Audible has everything but its expensive and my husband and I both use it, so we use it sparingly and only get books that both of us like.
I just finished The Ruins (from scribd) which was AMAZING. Patrick Wilson narrated. Next, I'm listening to Snowblind by Christopher Golden, and then The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi after that.

message 6: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 314 comments I like to get free e-books and then upgrade to the audio for a few bucks. It means I'm reading stuff I wouldn't usually. I just got a bunch from the international book day promo, so currently listening to The Easy Life in Kamusari

message 7: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 120 comments I'm 100% Audible at the moment. For me it's about finding great narrators as they can make or break a story. Even great stories can suffer if the narrator is only lack luster.

message 8: by Latasha (new)

Latasha (latasha513) | 141 comments I use overdrive, audible, and chirp for my audio books.

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 409 comments I loved the Elderlings saga by Robin Hobb, but Anne Flosnik was a bad match for the Live Ships trilogies. If I ever have to hear AF say “her” again…ugh!

I really enjoyed that one too, although I read it in hard copy. Is there another you could recommend on audiobook by the same author?

message 14: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 58 comments Oh, I see you’ve just started Between Two Fires Latasha! Is it any good? Or too early to say ?

I agree. Kate Mulgrew’s narration of NOS4A2 was excellent for example. I wish she’d record more. I keep checking back in anticipation…

message 16: by Glassaxe (new)

Glassaxe | 10 comments I’ve done audible trials in the past lol but they charge an absurd amount for credits on top of the monthly fee. I wasn’t into audiobooks at all until I discovered Libby and Hoopla and have been going to town with those since then. I still like to prefer to read physics books because the narration isn’t always great but the audio stuff is so convenient if you’re driving or at the gym or just want to multitask…
Im listening to Between Two Fires even tho it’s next month’s group read (woops) and the narrator is so good!

message 17: by Ian (RebelGeek) (new)

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 409 comments I have had the regular audible plan, audible+ & now silver. you get charged every other month & get 1 credit every other month, no audible+ freebies, but the stuff I wanted to read was rarely included. I currently have 4 credits, but might use a couple in the next few weeks for group/buddy reads. I try to always use libby & hoopla when possible, but sometimes an audiobook is on sale or I don't want to wait for a libby hold.

I’m audioing Between two fires by that author and it’s very well done. Since the book takes place mainly in France it’s nice hearing the narrator saying all the cities in perfect French. It’s pretty. Now what’s happening in the book is not pretty!

ChrisP Poyner I love audio books my library has the able to check out online through Overdrive

LTJ (ltj81) | 1043 comments @Felina: I'm 57% into Between Two Fires and I absolutely love it! That's so cool the audiobook pronounces all the French stuff in French, talk about the immersion!

message 21: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 262 comments I find that I can only listen to short stories. The one or two times I have tried longer works, I found myself tuning out the narrator.

I have been listening to the various Amazon Original Stories collections.
https://smile.amazon.com/b/ref=sxts_s...
I aim for one story a day for about two months straight, and then I take a break (usually a week or two). I start again in June.

Listening to the different collections in order pushes me out of my comfort zone and into genres I usually wouldn't choose on my own. I started from the bottom and am working my up as the newest collections are always added to the top of the list.

I read two or three of the newer collections (at the time) last year, so I am still trying to decide if I want to listen to them again (I get very completest with series and collections).

The next group on the list is called Disorder

Stories that get inside your head
Something disturbing is going on here. From small-town witch hunts to mass incarceration to exploitations of the flesh, this chilling collection of twisted short stories imagines the horrors of a modern world not unlike our own. What have we done?

Felina | 648 comments LTJ wrote: "@Felina: I'm 57% into Between Two Fires and I absolutely love it! That's so cool the audiobook pronounces all the French stuff in French, talk about the immersion!"

Exactly! I also like when audiobooks correctly pronounce characters names. I’m one of those people who murders name pronunciation when I read. Like really bad. I read the first three Harry Potter and just thought her name was Harmony. I read most of the dragonlance books as though his name was Carmen. *shrugs*

message 23: by Felina (new)

Felina | 648 comments @Nyssa - audiobooks take practice. It took me years to get as comfortable with them as I am now. Now I can listen to an audiobook and have a conversation with my husband at the same time and not miss a beat on either. Not for a prolonged timeframe but enough to explain something or provide simple instructions. Not like 5 year planning or something like that. 🤣

I listen to podcasts all day at work and I find I can’t concentrate on my work unless I’m listening. Like, silence is distracting. And I work from home so it’s not like my surrounding are a problem. That used to be why I listened at work when I worked in the office. Now my relationship with audio is a lot different.

message 24: by LTJ (new)

LTJ (ltj81) | 1043 comments @Felina: I never got into audiobooks but that would be so helpful to hear the proper way to say characters' names! LoL I tend to head to Google and just type in "how do you say..." just so when I read it, I can at least attempt to say it properly in my head :-P

Steven (tbones) | 93 comments Has anyone here ever listened to Stephen King's The Mist on audio? It's in , what they call, 3D sound and it's pretty awesome! I would love to listen to more stories done like this in audio but haven't found any. Anybody have recommendations that are like this?

message 26: by Shawna (new)

Shawna Finnigan (sugoishawn) | 22 comments I get all my audiobooks from Audible. My dad and I share an Audible account. I most recently listened to Project Hail Mary and it was amazing. There was an element to the audiobook that they couldn't include in the written format so that was really cool. The one I'm going to listen to next is Redwood and Ponytail. I don't know what it's about, but one of my favorite YouTubers (Tessa Netting) is one of the narrators for that book.

I listened to The Mist, but I don't remember the 3D part. Was it a single narrator or multiple? Full cast audiobooks are pretty great, imo.

message 28: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 93 comments Ian, it was a full cast and kind of done like the old time radio shows. You really have to wear headphones to enjoy the 3D sound effects.

Steven (tbones) | 93 comments Dan, thanks for the heads up! :0) I just started my trial of Audible this month, so I will have to check that out.

message 34: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 262 comments I am currently reading/listening to The Guild of the Cowry Catchers by Abigail Hilton.

The book is a reissue/rewrite of a series where the author has combined and expanded previously released novels.

I have been experimenting with audio versions this year, listening to longer works. I have learned that I do need to read along. I can not just listen.

The story is fascinating, but I'm wondering if the audio was recorded before the book was released - as I find that the spoken words do not always match the text. Sometimes one word is used instead of another (like "girl " instead of "woman"). Sometimes fragments or even whole sentences are skipped. I find this hiccup to be frustrating.

However, I like that it is a production - there is background music or ambient noise where appropriate, and each character has their own voice.

The books themselves are/were available through Kindle Unlimited, and I was able to use a free credit for the audio - but I will most likely have to pay for the others. I'm on the fence for now.

I've listened to Gideon & Nona. I enjoyed Gideon more being from the rebellious Gideon's pov. Nona was very confusing, but epic. I'll listen to the rest of the series. Hopefully it will make more sense than Nona did. ha

V C Ackerman | 1 comments So I haven't been listening to much audiobooks recently, but if any of you want to listen to someone with a nice voice regardless of the content of the book, look up audiobooks narrated by Tom Hiddleston. The Red Necklace and High Rise are a few that he's done.

I use Libby ☺️☺️

message 49: by Dani (new)

Dani I just got done listening to What Lies in the Woods Narrated by Kate Alice Marshall and loved it. I feel like the narrator really brought the story to life.

My jaw was on the ground by the end because of the last twists and turns it took. lol, It was a Mystery/thriller if that is anyone's jam.

message 50: by Dal (new)

Dal Cecil Runo (dalcecilruno) | 3 comments Most of my reading is done through audio. If there’s no audiobook available anywhere, then I have to set for the ebook with a robotic screen reader voice reading the words to me. Blindness. It’s a delight… 🤣
I use any audio app I can get access to in my region. Libby and hoopla, thanks to a kind friend who shares library access with me, because there are no libraries near me. Then I also love Scribd when I can afford it, and when there’s really no other way, I pay a month of Audible of Kobo to get that one audiobook I couldn’t find anywhere else because again, geography.

I just finished listening to The Weaver by Emmi Itäranta (also known as “The City of Woven Streets” in the UK edition. Love that book. I want more books like that one.
