Rhymes | 18 comments I'm really shocked to see no Jane Austen so far.
She probably one of the most popular female authors out there.
<3 pride and prejudice

Emily If I'm not mistaken, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were all read by people Week 2 (Romance). That's a fair amount of Jane Austen so far.

Yes, there were Jane Austen books for weeks 1 & 2. I think many of us already read the most popular (like P&P), so they won't use them for the challenge. And looking at the plans, it seems not many members here are interested in romances ;)

Lou LaJeunesse | 45 comments I read boat loads of Regency Romance for another group Iam in. Yo u can look at my bookshelves.

Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments I know this might be blasphemy since I'm a woman, but personally I hate Jane Austen's books. I always dreaded it when I saw them on school reading lists.

Lou LaJeunesse | 45 comments That is ok Manda. Everyone has their own preferences. You should read what you love whenever possible. If you look at my shelves you will find a freat many different things in there. As long as you are reading, enjoy the moment. By the way Manda what is your preference in reading material?

misplacedselchie | 347 comments I believe some others have Jane Austen down for other weeks as well. :)

Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments Lou,

I will read just about anything, but sci-fi/fantasy, and memoirs seem to be my go tos, with overtly romantic novels being at the bottom of my list.

message 9: by Jenna (new)

Jenna (jennawatts) Rhymes, for me it's because I've already read all her books. Maybe many other enthusiastic readers have done the same.
I do believe I've seen a few people with Persuasion (my favorite) and Northanger Abbey on their lists... I think these are read less often than Emma/P&P/S&S..

message 10: by Cris (new)

Cris (cris_lectora) @Zaz, the most common mistake people who reject Jane Austen's novels without trying to read them, is to classify them as 'romance novels'. Anyone who has ever taken the time to check them out has to know they're so much more. It's a pity.

How do you classify them?
For me, the ones I read (P&P and Persuasion) are romances (it's the main point!). I can't count "society critique" as a classification as most of the books I read use it, so the main events/the world help me to define the genre. Reading pages and pages about love and relationships is painful and the main reason why I dislike Austen's books ;)

Beca (becad) | 1 comments I read P&P for my week two book as did one of my friends! I have another friend reading Emma for the 'one word' week. We loved it! We don't have our plans posted in the group (they're being tracked on a large spreadsheet) but I'm sure there are many Jane Austen fans in this years challenge :D

message 13: by Grace Meredith (new)

Grace Meredith (koreantrash) I only need to read Persuasion, and then I've finished the Jane Austen books, so that's why she's not on my list. I personally love her to death.
