Our first Group Read for June is Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. Please remember to use chapters/page numbers/percentage and spoiler tags when discussing. Happy reading!

Cora | 8 comments Well, the copy of Ninth House that I borrowed from the library has a blurb from Stephen King on the front cover, so I guess it must be good. Looking forward to reading this one with you all, cheers!

Felina I’ve put this on hold at the library. Says it will be available soon so I’ll read this soonish. I’m excited about this one.

Happy birthday, from Char to Char!

Char | 17459 comments I just checked my local library through Overdrive and was able to download this audio for free! I'm in!

Leigh Taylor | 71 comments Happy birthday Month!

Charlene (Char)🍁☕️📚 | 67 comments Hellos! I just bought the book and will be starting to read it soon ! I can’t wait ! Aww thank you @Char ! And thank you @Leigh (:

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 634 comments I picked up a library copy of the audiobook, and started listening during our recent vacation travel. I'd heard a lot about this book, and was very curious. Just finished listening to Disc #5 of 13, and it's really got my attention. Good writing, great descriptions that really help visualize the settings, and interesting characters. Feeling some empathy towards the peculiar Alex so far.
Does this feel like a deeper, darker version of Harry Potter to anyone else?

Kemuel Raulo | 1 comments I’m in for this one

Emilie | 48 comments I'm on chapter 27 and (view spoiler) This is my first by the author. I'm trying to decide whether I like her writing style or not. It's been entertaining enough to finish, but I haven't been extremely thrilled with it.

Andrea Thomas (athomas0925) | 15 comments I really enjoyed this one and can't wait for the next to come out!

Carrie (brightbeautifulthings) (brightbeautifulthings) | 98 comments I've read all of Bardugo's Grishaverse, and Ninth House is a lot more dense than her usual. I wouldn't let the writing style put you off too much if you're interested in her other stuff.

This one is an adult book, the others YA. I loved the details here--I expect to start my reread this weekend! :)

message 29: by Emilie (last edited Jun 03, 2022 09:10AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Emilie | 48 comments Finished it today. Really wasn't anything to yell from the rooftops. I don't know if my not being apart of any societies when I was at college has anything to do with it, but I found this really dull. Even though there is a murder and ghosts. Scratching my head how it could've happened, but this wasn't my favorite.

Carrie (brightbeautifulthings) (brightbeautifulthings) | 98 comments I know, I read them. I just don't think the distinction is all that relevant in this case. YA novels can be plenty dense.

Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it more, Emilie! I did end up liking it more by the end, but it was definitely a slow burn for me.

Yes I really noticed the more 'adult' feel of this one, compared to the Grishaverse, and I think it was that layered darkness that really worked for me! I loved that it felt more complex and mature.

I'm looking forward to this re-read. There's always something "new" to discover--and reading with a group opens you up to other possibilities that you hadn't thought of.

Char | 17459 comments I’ll be finishing my current audiobook and then I’ll be starting this one. I was able to download the audio free from my library, so I’m psyched to check it out.

Gareth Is Haunted (garethj1979) | 64 comments I've just started this today. Having a hard time getting into it so far.

Rachel (rachelunabridged) | 589 comments my library hold came through yesterday! was a little worried because it said it was gonna take like 10 weeks, but i think a lot of people skipped their hold so now it's mine! lol

message 37: by Ash (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ash | 90 comments I'm just on chapter three, and feeling much the same as a few others. It's been hard to get into so far. I think it's the "matter-of-fact" writing style that is bothering me. Interesting things are happening for sure, but the tone is a little too uppity to make it truly scary. I'm not even sure if any of that makes sense. Lol. I do think the tone is probably intentional, but it's not my favorite.

message 38: by Zen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Zen (zzmarie) | 39 comments This one has been on my tbr forever and I've started it twice, but just couldn't get into it. I started again, and apparently the third time's the charm because once I got past the beginning, I couldn't put this ting down. I loved Alex and can't wait for the next. In a way I'm kind of glad that I didn't read it the first (or second) time I tried because The wait until the next one would have been so much longer.

I remember the beginning being very "dense" and slow, but it did get better after the groundwork was set. I haven't started the re-read yet.

evangelos | 27 comments I'm joining in early this month for this one and picked up a copy. Will start reading later this week.

Charlene (Char)🍁☕️📚 | 67 comments Hi! I started reading a few days ago and I’m on page Chapter 4 page 64. It’s a lot of back and forth between past to present. So far it’s a bit of a slow start for me I’m sure the action will pick up.

LOVE when that happens!

Char | 17459 comments I started this audio yesterday. I am definitely getting a Harry Potter vibe, at least so far. There are a lot of gaps and things I don't know, but I'm trusting the author will fill us in as the book continues on.

I was also wondering if things would be left hanging. Be patient. It starts to pull all threads together at Chapter 27, which is a partial conclusion because there's a whole bunch more to reveal in the final chapters.

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 634 comments I finished this on Saturday 6/11 but haven't posted a review yet. This is the week between mini-vacations and I have a ton of items to attend to before traveling again this weekend.
This definitely deserves a review and some comments. I will get to that as soon as I can, hopefully before it's just a vague memory.

message 48: by Char (new) - rated it 3 stars

Char | 17459 comments I'm glad to hear that most will be revealed and that you gave it 4 stars. I hope you can enjoy your vacation!

Rachel (rachelunabridged) | 589 comments oof, i'm really struggling to get through the beginning of this. ended up borrowing the audiobook too so i could listen through the slow patches while i do other things. i'm interested in the premise, but the writing feels really bland?

evangelos | 27 comments Read the first 2 chapters and seems interesting enough so far. But too early to tell without knowing exactly what's going on. I have another book in the middle though, so trying to finish that first before I continue
