Katzenjammer | 17 comments I read this approximately 20 years ago. Literally all I remember is the people on this world were treated like game pieces with game masters manipulating events to gain prestige.

Katzenjammer | 17 comments Bump.
Also, I think it may have been part of a series? I wish I could remember anything else. Driving me crazy.

Is this woman the POV of the book? Any other character?

Does she becomes a game master apprentice early on the book?

Do you remember anything about the cover?

Katzenjammer | 17 comments I wish I could remember any details of names or cover images. I believe, but might be mixing this with other books, she's groomed early in the book and the master let's her take lead on guiding the game. Then at end he leaves for a different territory as she graduates up. I also have a distant memory of her going off planet in a later book to meet other game masters.

Ky | 449 comments Long shot: The True Game by Sheri S. Tepper. The first book in the series is King's Blood Four. The first three are from a male POV, the other six from a female POV.

Katzenjammer | 17 comments Ky, sadly not it. I definitely remember this had no fantasy elements. Just straight up sci fi with the game masters betting on outcomes and manipulating people to get those outcomes.

Ky | 449 comments That's too bad. I hope you find this book or series, its premise sounds interesting.

Katzenjammer, can you describe the game and how it's played? Set on Earth in the near or distant future?

Is this book for adults and/or teens?

I copied a few book details to the header/ topic title. Feel free to edit it.

Katzenjammer | 17 comments Kris, I'm not sure. I think it was the rights to control more territory. Advanced type society that are simply bored so they create scenarios and bet on the outcomes by offering up better territory. Example (not actually in book, but to give you a sense of it) they might bet on 2 territories going to war in a specific time frame. So one would be trying to convince those in charge to avoid war, but might use like a villager in a key place to make sure it does not happen. The other game master would also know of the key villager and try to make them stray away from what they need to do to prevent war.

Seth | 21 comments The Ellimist Chronicles doesn't quite match, I think, but seems similar enough to be worth checking.

Google Books preview of The Ellimist Chronicles by K.A. Applegate - Seth's suggestion:
