Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley

4 STARS

This book is marketed as a YA (It was part of Renee's YA Book Club) but the storyline- an undercover operation on indigenous land involving the FBI and a hidden meth operation- was not handled with kid gloves. I loved reading about this culture and was fascinated by their beliefs and their methods of handling their problems. Highly recommend this one!

The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager

2.5 STARS

Riley Sager keeps beating dead horses by re-hashing a story when it's been done to death. If you have seen the movie Rear Window or read the book The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn , you already know what the plot of this book is and about 70% of the plot of this novel.

The other 30%- the plot twist- in my opinion, was so out of left field and ridiculous I spent the rest of the time reading it just seething as I also grumbled and rolled my eyes. So utterly silly. The only reason why it doesn't have a lower rating is that I had another idea for the plot twist, and the fact that I was not right and the plot twist did surprise me.

Sula by Toni Morrison

3.5 STARS

I'm sure this phrase has been used over and over and over again, but I'm saying it- Toni Morrison writes such beautiful prose and her words are just magical. I feel like when I pick up one of her novels I'm going in knowing I'm about to read such poetic words that you forget that you're about to read a horrific story.

Luckily, Sula isn't as heartbreaking as others but it does still tug on your emotions. The discussion of good vs evil, of who's good and who's bad, who needs to be saved... if any? The stories of growing up and friendship and betrayal and judgement.

Glad you ended up liking this book. I don't always recommend, because its not really a 5-star read, but a very good read nonetheless.

Congratulations on officially completing your 2nd Challenge!! Woot!!!
