Give Me Five

My next five:

Agnieszka,
I chose

My List

Thank you. I liked the first in series enough I got the box when I've seen it on sale.

My five are:

Book - My Evil Mother
Author - Margaret Atwood
Date Read - 7/2/22
Rating - 4 Stars
Review - I'm not really a fan of this author. I've tried a couple of different books including the Handmaid's Tale and have found that I just do not enjoy her writing. However, I bought this on a whim because at 32 pages if I didn't like it, I wouldn't beat myself up for spending the money on an author I'm not fond of. I didn't really love the book, but I did think it was pretty good. The mom was very very quirky and had the daughter believing she was an actual witch. Parts were funny, some parts just kinda sad. It wasant till the daughter was grown and had a family of her own that she kinda understood her mother and the things she said. I highly recommend reading this.

Barb, I *NEED* a book with a car on the cover to finish a challenge so I'm picking

Book - So Far From Home: The Diary of Mary Driscoll, An Irish Mill Girl
Author - Barry Denenberg
Date Read - 7/14/22
Rating - 3 Stars
Review - What a depressing read. Normally the Dear America books have a little bit of a happier ending, but this one ended so tragically I have to wonder why the publishing company allowed it. since it's a middle grade book. We have this extremely brave Irish girl, just barely in her teens, who leaves her home country of Ireland during the potato famine, to travel all the way to Massachusetts by herself on a boat. She lives with her aunt and is employed by a textile mill run by a man who doesn't seem to have a care in the world for his employees. The conditions at the mill are incredibly bad. There are no other jobs available for this young girl so she continues to work there. The book abruptly ends and in the epilogue we find our MC dies 3 years later at the age of 17 during a cholera outbreak.
I think my exact words were...Seriously??

My next five:

Thank you! Looking forward to it.
I'm glad you liked A Zen For Murder, makes me hopeful and will look out what you think of IQ :-D

Thanks! This just came for me at the library, so it was apparently meant to be :)
Agnieszka, A Zen for Murder wasn't great, but it wasn't awful either. It was better than many of the Kindle freebies I've read, but there were things about it that bothered me -- just not enough to DNF it or to prevent me from continuing the series.

Middle graders are usually 12, 13, or 14 years old, and I think kids are growing up faster these days than we did. Most of the kids I knew when my two were that age were able to deal with a story like this.

I've enjoyed all the books that have been picked for me so far. Let's see what comes up next. Here are my new 5:

Shelly, I pick

It's simple.
List 5 books you want to read. The next person chooses one of those books for you, and then lists 5 books they want to read. The following person chooses for them and so on...
No page limit.
You should probably read the book that was chosen for you before coming back to pick for someone.
