Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments Ten Low – slightly confusing but pretty good
Miss Lattimore's Letter – really cute

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments Finished The Moonlight School. I was expecting a story about night schools, but they don't open until the final pages of the book.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments Yeah that was interesting. Not what I expected either.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments Miss Lattimore's Letter was fairly cute I guess? I got bored. I love Austen and it's definitely Austenesque but not enough or something. I don't know.

Hopefully, you'll get one soon.

message 59: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments Should be soon, I think. I got through the first round of the ones I most wanted to read, so this next round was put on hold later.

message 61: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments I gave up on Battle Royal. Maybe I'll return to it later. Starting A Master of Djinn.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments Had kind of mixed feelings about Dictionary of Lost Words. Loved elements of it but it pushed close to the "trying to do too much" several times and there were avenues that seemed not to have needed exploring...but at the same time it's just right somehow? Ironically there aren't words to really explain it.

Running list:
Mrs March - 1 star
Come Fly the World - 5 stars
Clark and Division -4 stars

19 down, just one more to go!

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments The comparison of Ten Low to Firefly isn't wrong, but I found it difficult to follow, especially as an audiobook.
3 stars

That's all of them!

I did, too, but thought it might just be me.

message 65: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 1 comments I liked The Moonlight School, but I was disappointed that it was predictable once a new character was introduced. I also thought the story would be more about the school experience. Overall I enjoyed it. First time reading a Reader's Choice. I'm late to the party.

message 66: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments I found out A Master of Djinn has several prequel novellas. That probably would've helped with my initial confusion.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments Yeah that would have been good to know.

message 68: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments The Dictionary of Lost Words was quite good. I read The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary last year, which was mentioned in the author's note as inspiration.

whispers I couldn't get into A Master of Djinn. I bet the prequel novellas would've helped.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments I enjoyed it but it did feel like stuff was missing.
Now I clearly need to read The Professor and the Madman.

message 71: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments There is a movie of The Professor and the Madman, if you don't want to read a whole book. It's good.

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1220 comments Audrey wrote: "There is a movie of The Professor and the Madman, if you don't want to read a whole book. It's good."

The film is truly excellent. Mel Gibson as the Professor and Sean Penn as the Madman. Both inhabit their parts so well you forget who they are in real life.

message 73: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments I didn't recognize Mel Gibson at all in it.

message 74: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments To Sir With Love was cute. I think I can squeeze in Winter's Orbit. That leaves only four I didn't read, which I think is a record.

Nice work everyone! I've loved reading the reviews for this batch of Reader's Choice books.
Voting ends October 31st so if you're busy with trick or treating, you can still do any final votes online: https://www.slcolibrary.org/we-recomm...

message 76: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments Message 29 has my final ratings.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments How do the online votes get counted? Because based on the printout on display at my branch my votes aren't all included in their tallies.

Britt: Your branch may not have received your votes yet. When you vote online, they get sent to the branch you indicated online via our delivery routes so sometimes it takes a few days.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments It's been weeks, so I'm not sure what's up.

Let me know which branch and I'll see what I can find out!

message 81: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments I haven't seen a tally list. Is it online as well?

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments It's Hunter.

Audrey I don't think so. Hunter just has a printout posted.

Audrey wrote: "I haven't seen a tally list. Is it online as well?" Different branches do different things. We don't have an online tally, since all the branches gather individually and turn the totals in at the end.

message 84: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments I use Hunter too. I guess I haven't looked closely.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments It's been on the Readers' Choice display the last few times I've been in.

message 86: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments I haven't been over there recently as I've done mostly audiobooks and online voting.

message 87: by Patty (new)

Patty (scrapatty) | 160 comments Ugh! I completely missed it. I had no idea it had started yet and now it's over.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments Audrey I do mostly audio too but my kids think they'll die if they don't have a constant stream of library books!
Patty the next round should start in January. I think it's January and July.

message 89: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments I'm still at the library every week; just haven't looked closely at the RC display in a while.

It's every Jan to April and July to Oct, I believe.

Audrey's right! We'll get started on the next session in January and will run til the end of April.

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1220 comments Watching you all read and report on these, it seems to me the timing is like a female cat. As soon as one litter is done, it's time for a new round as soon as the current ones are weaned! When this latest round began I was actually startled because it seemed hot on the heels of the one that barely ended.

message 92: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments Same here. I did read a couple spring books after the deadline, so that was part of it.

message 93: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Thayn (ellethayn) | 70 comments Mod
If you haven't seen, the winners were posted!

1st: A Peculiar Combination
2nd: The Moonlight School
3rd: The Music of Bees

Thanks for all the votes! We'll see you again in January with the next batch of books.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 769 comments Interesting....I'm sad more people didn't read/enjoy the PanAm one.

message 95: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 675 comments I thought The Moonlight School was all right and didn't even read The Music of Bees. I liked the Pan Am one a lot. I don't think I had a top favorite.
