SciFi and Fantasy Book Club discussion

Dear all,

I'm wondering if someone can help me recall a SciFi book - it's about a guy who has a serpent daemon-type companion and who crash lands on a forested planet where the ecosystem has been dialled up (killer plants, giant earthworms etc.) In one scene, a girl from the group chasing him is killed by a flower she picked and placed in her hair because the roots started growing into her ... I'm pretty sure I haven't imagined all this. Any help would be appreciated! Many thanks
