This is the Pre-Read thread for the September 2022 Classics selection. This month we will be reading Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen.

Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? Why did you choose this classic book? Have you enjoyed other Jane Austen books?

message 2: by Elvira (new)

Elvira Dobis | 10 comments I read all of Austen's books in college, but I really only remember Pride and Predjuice and Emma. I'm excited to read this one again.

Gruntled (idontknowwhat2say) | 1 comments Only read P&P out of all the Jane Austen books so far, so I can't wait for this!

Andi | 367 comments I will be reading this, I have read a couple of her others. Not my normal genre but enjoyable.

message 5: by Frezita (new)

Frezita | 7 comments I recently started reading classics and of course Pride and Prejudice had to be the first book I read from Jane Austen. I also read the Jane Austen Society at the beginning of the year as well as started Persuasion. I figured I should hop on the train and continue reading the rest of her famous novels.

message 6: by August (new)

August (sarath595) I've read Sense and Sensibility (most of it, anyway), as well as Pride and Prejudice. I've heard Northanger Abbey is a bit different from her other books, so I'm hoping I'll enjoy this one a little bit more!

message 7: by Blue (new)

Blue I feel every reader has read a Zane Grey except for me. I'm reading my first one. Probably will read another one after I catch up.......:)

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 16 comments This will be my first read in this group and also my first Jane Austen book but I'm super excited!

message 9: by Jan (new)

Jan Z (jrgreads) | 404 comments I have read them all.

message 10: by Tiare (new)

Tiare (tiarereads) | 1 comments I've tried to read all of Austen's books, but this is actually the one that I gave up on! Excited to try it again. I loved Emma and P&P in high school and have reread those a couple of times.

message 11: by Jan (new)

Jan Z (jrgreads) | 404 comments It is fun. It is satire and funny.

Once I realized that the novel isn't as serious as some of the other Austen novels, I enjoyed it more. Austen is making fun of Gothic Novels and those of us (dare I say herself included) who like to read those types of books.

message 13: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 1 comments I have never read any of Jane Austen’s work, but I love the movie adaptations. I am looking forward to making this my first Jane Austen and group read !

message 14: by Jan (new)

Jan Z (jrgreads) | 404 comments Some of the movies are more faithful than others. JA is about the conversation and character development.

message 15: by fleurette (new)

fleurette | 195 comments I've started reading Jane Austen only about two years ago or so, and really loved her books. I definitely won't miss this one.

Quinty (Taylor's Version) (queenq) | 278 comments I'm gonna be reading this this month. I think it's the last of her full novels I have to read. Excited to see where this will fall within my Austen rankings lol

message 17: by Jan (new)

Jan Z (jrgreads) | 404 comments It is quite funny.

This begins our 2nd group discussion of our Catch-Up book selection, nominated by Renata.
Here you can comment, without spoilers, on any aspects of the book, either before, during, or after reading it.

Heather (bruyere) | 72 comments I actually read the book that supposedly she was making fun of. It's The Mysteries of Udolpho. It's a pretty wild mix of nature scenes and gothic. I can't say I recommend it but I appreciated it in the same way as B movies.

I kinda want to do a reread now with you all but I also remember not liking the book that much. Perhaps reading the "source material" will make it more enjoyable.

D.L. | 16 comments I love Austen. This was the first book I read by JA, I think. I think I'll join in the discussion next month :) Especially since I am currently reading Henry Tilney's Diary based on the novel.

message 21: by Jan (new)

Jan Z (jrgreads) | 404 comments I am also reading this for another book club in September.

message 22: by Wobbley (new)

Wobbley | 207 comments While nothing can dethrone Pride and Prejudice in my affections, I do think this is probably her funniest novel. And Tilney is a very appealing hero. I encourage people to give it a try!
