A lot of people really like Edward Rutherfurd's books, like London: The Novel, Russka: The Novel of Russia, New York: The Novel, etc. They're really, really long. I attempted to read one and it wasn't for me, but they get very high ratings here.

There is no particular era. I'm a history major and I'm trying to find my main interest...so a wide range of time periods would be appreciated.

Tytti | 190 comments There's also The Egyptian or some other book by the same author. It's still quite accurate historically.

Teri-K | 305 comments Here's a selection from my favorites.
I'd recommend just about anything from these authors, and they cover a fair amount of historical ground. Many of them represent series well worth reading. They're in no particular order:

Here be Dragons (Welsh Princes, #1) by Sharon Kay Penman Shadows and Strongholds by Elizabeth Chadwick To Serve Them All My Days by R.F. Delderfield A Bloody Field by Shrewsbury by Edith Pargeter A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens Kim by Rudyard Kipling North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell Sharpe's Tiger (Sharpe, #1) by Bernard Cornwell Genghis Birth of an Empire (Conqueror, #1) by Conn Iggulden The Wall by John Hersey
My Ántonia by Willa Cather The Crucible by Arthur Miller The Agony and the Ecstasy by Irving Stone Les Misérables by Victor Hugo The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff Ivanhoe by Marianna Mayer The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Giants in the Earth A Saga of the Prairie by O.E. Rølvaag The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer

Have fun. the field of historical fiction is vast and well worth exploring. :)
