We have a double feature this month with author, Glenn Rolfe. We will be reading his book The Haunted Halls which is on a separate thread and then reading this book, Something in the Groove. Both books are connected. The Haunted Halls is first and then Something in the Groove is second.



Description:

Lee, an urban shaman, gets tasked with tracking down a vinyl copy of the Dark Light EP by the ’80s hard rock band, Bad Obsession. The extremely rare record is said to be cursed. Nearly every copy of the album burned in a fire at Tower Records in Los Angeles the day of its release. With only one remaining member of the band alive and living in a home for those battling Alzheimer’s, Lee must return to Maine, a place where he’s battled evil forces before, and see if he can retrieve the album.

Living her life on autopilot and working in an economy motel, Rhiannon is visited by a dark force she’s not felt in years. The evil is familiar but not quite what she remembered. This is something else. In over her head, she calls out for Lee, hoping her old friend can hear her.

Brought back together by a force beyond anything either has dealt with prior, Lee and Rhiannon must combat powers beyond their realm. The Master wants to come through, and should someone spin the crimson vinyl, that’s just what he’ll do. A portal is about to open, and the world is about to learn the true meaning of pain.

Just bought it. Finishing another book probably tonight and then I’ll jump in.

I'll be starting it this weekend.

I bought this the same time as Haunted Halls, but will be reading it later in the month. My currently reading shelf is overbooked at the moment.

I am starting this weekend too! Just finished The Haunted Halls late last night! :)

I would advise all to check out The Haunted Halls before reading this one, but I did try to make it readable for people just discovering Lee Buhl. I had so much fun revisiting Lee. He's definitely one of my favorite characters.

I started it this afternoon as I could not wait. In the middle of chapter 3 at 20% into the story.

I am already feeling the creepiness slip under my skin! I can feel that this is going to be an excellent sequel! :)

I am at 29% and loving how this is coming together.

Thoughts so far: I felt bad for Lee when those hallucinations kicked in - at least I hope that what is was - lol - poor guy - he just cannot catch a break from entities. (hide spoiler)]

How did you come up with the idea for Lee to come back and deal with a cursed record?

Lee could have come back to deal with something different but instead he is tracking down a cursed object.

Did you come up with that idea because you are so involved in the music scene?

Marie, yeah, I'm a huge music fan and love vinyl. I knew it would be fun to make a cursed record story. That said, when I wrote the first version of this story it was with a random "finder of lost things" character instead of Lee. It wasn't until I was a couple of thousand words into the story that I saw this better suited for Lee Buhl. As soon as I made that decision, the story began to write itself. It was freaking AMAZING. I had so much fun writing in this universe again.

I am loving this book Glenn! I think it is more scarier than The Haunted Halls! I can barely put this book down. Read quite a bit of it last night.

I finished the book early hours of this morning! Really liked it! Need to work on my review yet, but I gave it a four star rating. :)

I really like Lee Buell! Are there more books in that series? They aren't organized as a series on here. I bought Blood and Rain & Land of Bones.

Hi, Ian! I never planned on Lee having a series, but it has developed that way over time.
I have at least two more Lee adventures coming over the next couple of years. There is a Lee story in Land of Bones. It's called "Death Lights". I'm planning on the next novel taking place between The Haunted Halls and "Death Lights". There's a mirror demon involved and I want to really explore that. The second novel will pick up after Something in the Groove.
So timeline-wise, the series is all over the place.

Not quite. The evil entity in SitG knows about Lee and Rhiannon's pasts and, in the scene where we find Rhiannon, it definitely plays her past up to fuck with her.

I have a couple of questions Glenn but not about this book - more about books you have on the back burner.

When I had you in my other group earlier this year you mentioned three books that were suppose to come out this year but now with publisher changes I am wondering if those books are still in the works or not.

You had mentioned Chasing Ghosts 2, Blood Predilection, and It Came From The Lake. Are those books still coming this year or have they been moved back to next year?

Also I know you mentioned Becoming 2 and a sequel to Until Summer Comes Around will be coming next year. Plus you had mentioned a sequel to Blood and Rain as well. Are all these books coming next year?

Chasing Ghosts 2 is about 95% finished and I have a publisher interested,
Blood Predilection is still in the works and should be finished soon.
It Came From the Lake is done and edited awaiting release with Crystal Lake Publishing at the end of this year.

As for BECOMING 2 (had to put that one on pause due to life, and same with Waiting fro Darkness (sequel to Blood and Rain)
I'm currently knee-deep in the sequel to Until Summer Comes Around which is 100% coming out from Flame Tree in the second half of 2023. I should have plenty of others trickling out next year, too.

By the way, I already listened to Blood and Rain & I really enjoyed it! I'd love to read (listen to) Waiting for Darkness!

I did not get to this one this month, but it is on my list for October.

So far it's pretty interesting and as a metalhead, I love all the band references \m/

Started this one last night and I think I’m through chapter 4 or 5. So far so good. I like Lee, his voice is fun to read and I’m looking forward to Rhiannon showing up.

Ok, I’m flying through this one! I’m at about 80% so definitely will finish tonight. Lee & Rhiannon are great and a great team. Maybe some romance brewing with this friendship?
