D. 3-5 books by one of these authors- Andre Norton, Julian May, Joan D. Vinge, Michael Moorcock, Ben Bova, J.D. Robb, Larry Niven, Robin Hobb, Jack McDevitt, Mercedes Lackey, Kim Stanley Robinson, Octavia Butler.

Yep, most of these authors write primarily science fiction or fantasy, though many of them stray into other genres occasionally. Some of these authors tend to publish fatter books, so this challenge is to read 3-5 books. If you already know you HATE scifi and fantasy, you might want to check out Andre Norton's romances or mystery/suspense, J.D. Robb is also known as Nora Roberts, so if all else fails you could I suppose read Nora Roberts books under this prompt too.

I am working my way through Ben Bova's Grand Tour series, but I also just started Red Mars, by Kim Stanley Robinson. I have lots of Andre Norton and quite a few Robin Hobb, Julian May, Joan D. Vinge, ... AND the library has audiobooks of a lot of Jack McDevitt's novels, which I also have in print (and even borrowed!). It'll be a tough decision, but McDevitt is actually looking really likely for my TBR for this prompt.

Cathy (cathepsut) | 570 comments The Mars trilogy is excellent. Or rather I thought it was when I read it a long time ago. More recent works by Robinson did not hit my sweet spot.

And I just read Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb, continuing with The Mad Ship. I like this trilogy better than the previous Farseer trilogy.

Not sure yet what to make of Octavia Butler. I really liked Bloodchild, but Dawn felt a bit dated and I struggled with the lack of consent.

Dee (austhokie) | 127 comments i like New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson - basically new york has flooded due to climate change and people now live in buildings above like the 30th floor - i might read another of his books

I really enjoyed Kindred as well as Parable of the Sower (and the sequel). I have a thing for dystopian worlds as well as time travel when used well.

I loved Kindred. I found with Dawn that I had to read the entire trilogy in order to really appreciate what Butler was doing.

I finished this one with some Jack McDevitt books, space adventure sci-fi.
Echo
Coming Home
Octavia Gone
These 3 are all from the Alex Benedict series, in which Alex and his friend/employee research and locate rare artifacts for extremely rich private collectors in the very distant future. They meet aliens, deal with a weird time distortion anomoly that traps Alex's uncle, and find out the truth about mysterious deaths and disappearances. The bits about people thousands of years in the future trying to make sense of fragments of stuff from our era are often funny.
