We're in 11th right now.
We need around 2650 to move into 10th place, so we might move up after we feed people."

I didn't understand Lisa's note about our place in msg 344...do you?

message 352: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments Oh! I read that before and I completely forgot about it.

I guess we read for where we are then.

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 760 comments I'm confirming with the Mods in a PM about what words we search for based on the place. I don't have a response yet. Did you guys get access?

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 760 comments We can save the Drinks and Desserts too...

Desserts, drinks and cocktails ; can be shelved/frozen and used at any point through the challenge. 500+pages.

No access. I'm willing to do it tomorrow if I can get in.

Hmm...does it make more sense then to use the meals now since they are more points? And save the drinks since they keep.

For round 3, use the 500+ plus books for more food then we did last round.

I most likely won't have as many 500+ books this round. I have two posted, and unless a challenge pushes me into it, or I find another box set that I'm willing to read, I'm not likely to have any more.

message 359: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 760 comments I'd save the drinks for next round. I was thinking i probably won't get any 500+ plus books this month.

Desserts hit more types of people..so save desserts?

Did you want me to do it when the mods get me access?

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 760 comments Try some new, more popular, dishes to attract your target group for round 3.
- Meals with the word "chocolate", "gold", or "scallop" in the text or title, or used as a spell-it-out will attract more adults for round 3

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 760 comments November is a really busy time for me, so I'm going to read as much as I can, but not sure I'll be able to help a whole bunch with creating meals and stuff. I know Steph, Hayley and Susan are in similar boats.

Vian and April, are you able to do more of that this month?

message 364: by Steph (new)

Steph I along with everyone else in my house currently have COVID. I really don't know how much reading I'm going to be able to do this month. My daughter tested positive first on Monday, but she's had symptoms since 10/27 and she's still testing positive. We were sitting at 5 of 6 of us until today and my last kiddo tested positive this morning.

Reading isn't something I'm able to do currently. I can do audios but what I've listened to so far won't count for this challenge as they're rereads. I'm going to do my best to get a few books for this challenge in this month. I just don't feel comfortable promising anything much. Hopefully once we're all over it and we get the house sanitized I'll have a week or so to binge.

message 365: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments I'm not happy with the amount of time I spend on this challenge. It's not the reading...it's recording the words, looking for the words, keeping track of the papers I have stashed all over the place. I read 54/90 books we used last month, so that's just a lot. Keeping track of this info interferes with my enjoyment of the books. I've learned that scavenger hunts are just not for me.

In addition, there is the hours of work at the end of the month -- making meals and then describing them. I don't find it fun. I spent hours on it, and I certainly didn't do it all.

For November, after the first week, I usually switch to Christmas books which tend to be shorter. I won't have many 500+ or even 300+ books this month.

In addition, I will not commit to helping at the end of the month. I have too much going on and well...this isn't how I want to spend my time.

So.... if someone commits to taking care of the meals and the descriptions and submitting the info at the end of the month, I'll keep on recording my books. But if no one wants to take on that part of the challenge, then there is no point in keeping track any more.

Also, if someone does agree to take it on...FYI, I asked for access to the spreadsheet in order to help Lisa for October. I received no response and I was not granted access. I'd suggest asking for access right away so that there is plenty of time to get a response.

message 366: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I can definitely try to step up my reading for this month. I can also keep writing the meal descriptions.

I'll do the best I can.

I don't have access to the sheet either. Where did you ask for permission to post?

message 367: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments I requested access in the spreadsheet -- so it would send an email to the sheet owner. I included a message.

Vian -- are you committing to doing all of the recording, or are you saying you'll give it a shot and if it works out you'll do it?

If it is the first, I will commit to recording my books for the rest of the month.

If it is the second, then I don't intend to record my books. Because I read at least 1 book per day and up to 3 per day, and because most of them are audiobooks, the tracking of this challenge is quite literally making me miserable. Stopping the book and backtracking. writing the info down on paper, keeping track of the paper, entering it into my spreadsheet, copying it over to the team spreadsheet...realizing I didn't find enough items and then looking on line through search the book at amazon on google ... it's just not fun; it is a chore, and one that takes too long.

But, it's a chore I made a commitment to when I joined the team. So if you are committing to taking on the all of the captain's work, I will commit to finishing the challenge.

On the other hand, if you are not sure that if you have the time to do it all, or the desire to it all, recording my books is just too much work knowing it could possibly be not submitted.

I know I could simply record less books, but I'm not wired that way. I tried...and then I went back and found the items. It's all or nothing.

So if you are promising to finish this challenge, then I will finish it.

message 369: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I can take over posting at the end of the month.

Susan I'm sorry you've hated this challenge so much.

What does everyone think: keep going or stop?

message 370: by April (new)

April Raimond | 83 comments I will try to help with the meals.

message 371: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments Meals with the word "chocolate", "gold", or "scallop"

What is this? What meal would have gold in it?

Anyway, I'll start adding my shorter books I guess since we don't have many this moth so far

message 372: by Steph (new)

Steph I'm finally starting to feel better. I did read/listen to some books while sick. I just need to go back through and track :)

message 373: by Steph (new)

Steph Susan A wrote: "What is this? What meal would have gold in it?

All of my time watching Food Network is finally paying off! Edible gold is a gimmicky thing that chefs use to "elevate (charge quadruple what it's worth) a plate". It's usually added to desserts.

Steph...does this mean we should only look for gold in a 500+ book, since we can only it to dessert?

message 375: by Steph (new)

Steph Susan A wrote: "Steph...does this mean we should only look for gold in a 500+ book, since we can only it to dessert?"

Not necessarily I don't think. I've seen cheeseburgers with gold flakes and caviar on them.

message 376: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I've definitely heard of cheeseburgers with caviar. It was one of those ridiculous things that had truffles too.

I just looked at the scoreboard and we're in 6th place! Crazy!

I'm a bit behind in updating my books, so I'll do that and start making meals in the next couple of days.

message 377: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments So I have a question.

It doesn't look like the books/ingredients are being subtracted from the main book listing page. I just made 1 meal and it's not registering.

I have no clue if it's my computer or if its the page itself. Can someone take a look?

It's a spreadsheet error.

Give me a few minutes to fix it. I'll post when I am finished

message 379: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments ok...that was a fast fix! Should be good now.

message 380: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments Thanks Susan!

message 381: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments Vian- the mods just gave me access to spreadsheet. If you didn’t get access you may want to ask again Not sure if they gave it to both of us or just to me in error

message 382: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I requested it last week, but nothing happened so I just asked about it in the mod group.

If I don't hear back I'll request it again.

message 383: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments If you don't have access, then I would assume they gave it to me instead of you

message 384: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I have access now!

I think they might have just been behind responding to doc requests.

Vian what do you need me to do? I have no clue what I am doing.

message 386: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments April wrote:

The main thing I think is help with making meals and writing descriptions

message 387: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments So I'm making meals and we have several options of gold and chocolate to use as ingredients. Are they only supposed to be used in certain dishes?

message 388: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 760 comments I don't think so. I think they can be used on anything.

I have a bunch of books to add. I did not track ingredients, so I have to go back and find some. is there anything we are looking for? Otherwise I can just try and do some spell outs with my books.

message 389: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments If you remember anything with Figs, that would be great for the bonus dishes.

message 390: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments I added a bunch of short books to the overflow spreadsheet -- all spell it since I didn't ttrack those books when I read them

message 391: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments Congratulations everyone on finishing this challenge!

message 392: by Susan A (new)
