If you Believe by Kristin Hannah, 3 stars ONLY if you know ahead of time she started off as a romance genre writer and not the type of writer she is now

Yes, I agree and it's partly why her newer books have never had more than a 4 star rating from me. But they aren't following the romance genre predictable happy ending :) Once in a while I am in the mood for a predictable happy ending.

That's the other romance one I read by her and it came as quite a surprise!

For those of you who, like me, were introduced to Kristin Hannah with The Nightingale, know that her first book was published 24 years earlier and that she started off writing romance genre novels. This means they are predictable and very different than the novels she has been writing in the past 7 years or so. Since I read a different romance by her and was over the shock of the different type of writing, I was able to enjoy this for what it is and not for the type of writing Hannah is doing now. I needed to read a book by her and since I had a full reading plate, wanted a quick read, which is what I got.
Now that I have that out of the way, this historical novel is set primarily in Washington state in 1864. There is both humour and sorrow in this book (not combined) where a drifter gets a job on a farm with a grieving woman and her ailing father. I have no idea where she came up with the surname Throckmorton, but it took me a while to get used to it in this type of novel. It was an enjoyable way to spend an evening when I didn't want to read anything serious.
