I think I know what's going to win, even without casting my vote yet!

Joy D | 10100 comments What are the tags? I am remote and can't follow the links.

2006, scary and social commentary

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Please please please be scary, PLEASE!! 🦇🎃👻

message 7: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5757 comments 2006 seems to sometimes mean the person read the book in 2006, because it has things like Pride & Prejudice on it, kind of ridiculous.

message 8: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12930 comments Voted.... I have something for all of them, and I think they all have a pretty equal shot from our group.

LoL-knew you would be jumping for joy on this one Meli-I was surprised, I actually have 2 books on my TBR that are on the list-I may be kind to you and throw my votes your way. I have a feeling it just may win, being the season for such things

message 10: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I noticed that World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War was on all 3 tags.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11074 comments Are we still having fall flurries in October? If so we will already earn two points for each scary Halloween Book.

I like that flurries gives us the equivalent of 2 or more different tags. I don’t want to double up on just one type of book by picking a tag that fits flurries.

I’m not sure if people still use the social commentary tag on new books, because the genre page is missing the sections for new releases and most read this week. But I read many books this year that fit the social commentary idea.

It doesn’t matter

The last time we had a year tag many expressed their intention to read books published that year.

I am with you, Meli!

message 18: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15536 comments For me scary is a reasonably versatile tag because it is so subjective. What is scary to one person is not scary to another. Plus, a lot of non-fiction would fit, such as The Hot Zone: The Terrifying True Story of the Origins of the Ebola Virus, or for me some of the political books out there, including a few memoirs.

Thanks for pointing out the non-fiction options. I have The Hot Zone on my TBR. I'm not into horror or thrillers so it will be a good choice for me if "scary" wins.

It is actually the first book I thought of when I saw 'scary' as an option.

There are many of us here Meli who don't play for points ( you can only spend 10 of them to vote, so why pile them up?) I vote on the tag based on my TBR titles, and so do others. Anyway, that's my opinion, not trying to offend anyone-I will vote with you Meli-promise

message 24: by Holly R W (last edited Sep 16, 2022 06:20AM) (new)

Holly R W | 3119 comments I don't play for points either. I vote for the tags that most interest me. (And many times they don't win.)

When I saw the tag "Scary", I had a similar thought to Theresa's. That I might find a political book - That IS scary! ;0)

As for the book, "The Hot Zone", I've looked at that in the past, but it's too scary for me. (I'm the kid that used to hide under the table when the Three Stooges came on.)

message 25: by Joanne (last edited Sep 16, 2022 06:30AM) (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12575 comments LoL Holly! I am the poor kid who had 2 older sisters who loved horror movies. When Mom and Dad were out for the evening they loved to watch the old Vincent Price movies-they scared the wits out me. The two "monster-sisters" would hold me down, pry my eyes open and make me watch-scared for life

message 26: by Holly R W (new)

Holly R W | 3119 comments OMG, Joanne! You poor thing! My son started liking horror movies as a teen, which I never understood.

Now, having been a part of PBT for awhile, I realize that Horror is enjoyed by braver souls than me.

😊 Thank you!

You can only use 10 points to vote!? I thought you could use as many as you want, LOL

I don't really play for points because I mainly read based on my book club picks or pick tags that are good for my interests and tbr.

DianeMP | 534 comments With October coming up, one tag in particular will fit nicely. I voted.

message 29: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5757 comments I don't think anything will top this month's tag. It seems every book I have read, including some obscure ones, had at least 5 people marked it as Favorites.

I've been noticing that.

Just pick out the book you want to read and then check if it has a tag of favorites.

I wonder how Cindy's count will look for this month?

message 31: by Jenni Elyse (new)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I voted and threw all my points for “scary.” Let’s hope it wins!

message 32: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12930 comments See? All the folks that thought Scary would never win, have at least a lot of vocalized endorsement. Although it has been said in PBT in past years, that often the tag most talked about is not the one that wins. I rather think they all have a pretty equal shot. Once I researched social commentary, I realized its most of what we read. That said, I do have something for everything. For Scary, I really think my regular ghosty Halloween themed books are just not going to cut it, but I saw The Lost Village on the list, and that is on my TBR. So if Scary wins, I am adding that to the ghosty eerie pile.

message 34: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10100 comments I can work with any of these tags, too. I am always ok with a tag that fits "themes for October" gets chosen for October, even if it is not my personal preference.

No, I’m just pro-choice. Haha.

I’m actually voting for scary! I’m reading The Stand. I think Biden announced october 6 as indigenous peoples day, so I can read a Louise Erdrich book for flurries— assuming we have flurries this year. Some of her books also have ghosts. I could also read a climate change book. That scares me a lot more than a ghost story.

Bnb said an announcement is coming. It was after I mentioned flurries so… I wonder what it will be. Personally I would like a flurries type option every month, even if it’s just one book. March could be an Irish book 🍀

Excellent Rachel! I always love to find a book that fits all three tags. And welcome to PBT. It’s nice to see you here.

I think a couple of Margaret Atwood’s books would also fit scary and social commentary. Handmaid’s Tale and the Maddaddam trilogy.

You’re right about the points, They don’t matter for themselves, they’re just a way to clarify the challenge, and focus our attention. The fun part is when we’re all talking about the same topics or tags.

I’ve been mostly absent this month, and I know I’ve missed a lot of the fun.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11074 comments I feel like I just had a breakthrough thanks to The World That We Knew by Alice Hoffman. I have been in a real funk for a while now. I had a hard time reading for physical reasons, then it was hard to focus, and then I was hard to feel anything. I was ok with short books, but I almost skipped this one because I had just read another WWII book that I didn’t enjoy. I knew that this one was a favorite, so I got it back and finished it tonight. The story and the writing are just beautiful, and It really moved me. So I want to say “Thank you” to Amy, Lyn, and others who raved about it. It feels good to feel this way again.

Was in that same spot for quite a while Nancy, and I am so happy to be out of it! I am glad you were able to get over the hump, people who are not avid readers just do not understand what a huge part if our lives books are.
