Michele | 274 comments Leonard Nimoy, Spock, left us today. A great man who brought to life an iconic character - he will be missed.

It's interesting for an actor to be so totally identified with a character, especially one that's picked up such a huge fan following in subsequent years. I was at college when the original series ran. I watched some episodes on the dorm's communal TV. It was a tech geek dorm, so at least there wasn't any fighting over which channel to watch (out of the choice of four.) I picked up the eps I missed in summer reruns.

After the original Star Trek series ended, Nimoy went on to perform in an equal number of seasons on Mission Impossible (replacing original cast member Martin Landau, who left MI with his wife Barbara Bain to soon create the Space: 1999 TV series.)

For awhile Nimoy wasn't thrilled with being so strongly identified with the iconic Mr. Spock. He even wrote a book after his MI stint, I am Not Spock. Then the Star Trek movies revived the franchise, and he seemed to embrace his fandom.

For older fen like me, the original Star Trek series was the iconic TV sci-fi, more so even than Twilight Zone. And Spock was the definitive alien. So it's another part of my youth passed away...

Later on, he wrote a second biography I Am Spock :)

Thanks for the link, Kivrin. That was a beautifully written post, and just what I needed.

I especially loved the line "Spock was about carving out a place in the universe where you fit."

As G33z3r said, it's unusual for an actor to be so totally identified with a character, but I think Star Trek, and Spock, meant so much to so many that the impact is indelible.

Joseph | 7 comments Nimoy was a visionary. He took a chance on a character that, at the time, was so risky. I don't think anyone really knows how many people he inspired.

Zara | 4 comments I completely agree. I remember watching (and reading) Star Trek when I was a little kid with my dad and just loving it. I was inspired by that show, Nimoy especially.

Yes. May his inspiration too live long and prosper.

reading Star Trek....I rember being just a wee lad reading James Blish's adaptations of the show to my "Grandma" (great grandmother)...she was blind at the time, I don't think she knew what SF was, much less Star Trek, but she was kind enough to sit still for it...Kirk gave me no end of problems, I was always having to skip the parts where he was kissing the girls (yuck! I'm not reading THAT to Grandma...), but never had any problems with Mr. Spock

:)

D. Snyder | 51 comments For those into gaming, the MMO "Star Trek Online" chose to commemorate Mr. Nimoy (in the form of his character, of course) with a pair of statues in relevant places (one on Vulcan and another on New Romulus). They also took the occasion to place a very touching memorial plaque in other central areas. The plaque includes quotes from other departed cast members. The other side of it commemorates personalities associated with the series (crew members, writers, etc.).

If you are a player of Star Trek Online, I recommend a visit to the memorials.
