What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Hi all,
I’m looking for a book that I read sometimes in the 90s where The main character is a prince and is able to create portals to travel between worlds. His home may be the center of the worlds and his family can all create these portals. In the beginning he creates a portal (to maybe escape a prison or something).
It’s been. Long time so I hope this is enough of a description.

How old is the main character?

Is this book for kids, teens, or adults?

Main character is between 20 and 40 I think.
