Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments For our challenge this month, and going off the obsession in the threads ;), we will be reading a book with a weather event in the title. Nice and simple. I want you to find a book you wish to read, which mentions some form of weather in the title, read it and score it. Yay!

Clarifications.

I want weather. So for example:
The Shadow of the Wind
Snow
The Art of Racing in the Rain
Cloud Atlas
All good examples.

What not to pick.
Prodigal Summer <- it's a season, not weather.
As Night Follows Day <- not a weather event, it's a time of day.
Moon Called <- thing in the sky, but not weather. Same with sun. HOWEVER I will count Sunny or Heat as weather terms.

If you are unsure, ask me please for a ruling.

And if you choose a lesser known term, say like Nimbus, let us know what it is eg. that it's a type of cloud.

General Rules:

1. The book may be in any format - paperback, ebook, audiobook.
2. The book may be in any genre.
3. The book may NOT be combined with the Year Long Serial Killer Challenge.
4. The book must be read between 1 March to 31 March (based on your own time zone).
5. The challenge is for one book. You may read more books if you chose, but only the highest scoring book will apply.
6. The book must be 175 pages or more determined by the issue you read. If reading eBook or audiobook page numbers will be determined by the issue that comes up on a Goodreads search.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am reporting that I read Snowflake Bentley for the theme, but I am not really applying it for a score. It came in the mail yesterday. I thought it was a longer book, but it was interesting. It is a kids book about a man who spent his whole life studying snowflakes and trying to draw them and later photographing them for others to see. It is more about the man than about the snowflakes themselves. The woodblock pictures are beautiful. In all of nature, no two snowflakes are EVER alike. Think about that one!

2pts - 300-399pp

Bonus Points
2pts - has a day off work for some sort of holiday - there was much stopping of work for various religious holidays and feasts throughout the book. Many people took a holiday to spend the days of the Yule feast with the bishop.

2pts - mentions a spider of some kind - the main character plays with a long-legged spider for half a page.

2pts - a character chooses to give up something to make themselves a better person (all of March is Lent) - Much of the book took part during Lent. The townspeople could eat only bread, fish, and water during Lent. (They also were forbidden to do other things I won't mention here.)

Susan Guard | 695 comments I just finished The Year of Fog by Michelle Richmond. I really liked this one. Thanks to Stephanie and Ann who gave me their opinions when I was considering this as my choice for this challenge. The story was intense, the points for the challenge pretty non-existent...
author: female so 2 points
genre: 0 points
cover: 0 points
pages: 369 so 2 points
bonus: 0 points (Though the story takes place during an entire year and there would obviously be holidays, they aren't really highlighted as days off. And the protagonist dedicates her life, to the point of obsession, to her search, not really to better herself but rather for for someone else. So I don't think it would count.)

Grand total for this book = 4 points! Though I see it's not quite glue stick worthy according to everyone else's posts.

The author is a Japanese male, with multiple books published.
The genre is general fiction and it was only 175 pages. I did drink a beer while reading it, but unfortunately no beers on the cover. It did have a tree on the cover, but also a Geisha. No spiders, no self-sacrifice, and no days off! :)

Points:

2 for holidays (many festivals throughout)

and, not sure about this one:
2 for giving up something. Does footbinding count? Lots of sacrifices by women throughout the book, although not always by choice and usually for the benefit of family
