Out of curiosity, why aren't bookseller covers allowed on Goodreads? Is it a copyright issue? And if that's the case, why are covers allowed from places like AbeBooks?

Amazon owns AbeBooks and Goodreads.

Yes, it is a copyright issue for places Amazon doesn't have the copyright or where the site owner doesn't allow retrieving of images.
