I read what you wrote about the how the author made it all about race and I agree with you. Seems like that’s happening a lot lately in life as we know it.

I think race and themes around race were inevitable given the historical setting and what was happening with colonialism at the time. I didn't feel like she made all the white people bad and the others good. She does show that some decisions that the main characters make are questionable or morally grey. There are also some white people that help them with their strike. Unfortunately, most people at that time were ignorant or worse when it came to other cultures.
I guess at the end of the day it all depends what you look for in a book and what you enjoy reading about :)
