Emma (M) | 1777 comments Hi all, I have recently finished The Martian and really enjoyed the book. I am looking for something of a similar vein, that is - something that is Sci Fi but not a space opera type of sci fi. Any recommendations?

Justin (rockstarintraining) So I hated The Martian, but I've of my favorite sci-fi books is Ender's Game if you want a fun, lighthearted read. Fire sine classic stuff, 1984 and Slaughterhouse Five have sine sci-fi elements.

Justin (rockstarintraining) I apologize for the typos. I have a habit of typing quickly on my phone and not proofreading. Hopefully you can make sense of it all. :)

Emma (M) | 1777 comments I have the same problem on my phone :) Ender's Game sounds like it might be a good read.

Nancy Smith I felt that Ender's Game made a much better book than a movie. I read four or five books from this Orson Scott Card series and liked them.

Rika-sama | 22 comments I liked the book as well. I dont really know any similar sci-fi, but I kind of felt that the Wool books have a somewhat similar vibe. I hope you get some more recommendations, interested myself :3

Beth | 503 comments I haven't read The Martian, but "anything that's not space opera" is a pretty broad category of sf.

Maybe try Ursula Le Guin's The Lathe of Heaven or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? or (more recent) Alif the Unseen.

Jim Vuksic Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
The Inverted World by Christopher Priest

Mike Sheridan I loved the Martian.

Ender's Game is a great read and an interesting side note is that Orson Scott Card wrote a "sequel" that isn't really a sequel but another perspective on the same story. "Ender's Shadow" follows another character from the original book and the story is seen from his viewpoint.

Really interesting literary device.

"Ready Player One" is also one of my favorites in the sci-fi space.

I really enjoyed Ender's Game, and a friend recently recommended The Martian to me. Right now I"m reading Dune, a classic which I have always meant to read and am finally getting around to it! If you guys have other sci-fi recommendations, please let me know!

Emma (M) | 1777 comments I ended up reading Ender's Game and loved it. I've also recently read Red Rising and Golden Son and loved them too.

Yzabel Ginsberg (yzabelginsberg) | 167 comments I read it some 12 years ago, so my judgment may be clouded, but I remember loving the "Mars" trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. (Not his latest work, though. That one disappointed me. :()

Emma (M) | 1777 comments I have been wanting to read that trilogy for ages, but have never got around to it.

Ron I liked Ready Player Oneby Ernest Cline. It was semi-sci-fi and fun to read. I often thought about Dune, but since seeing the movie...

Ah! See, I've never seen the movie Dune, so I went into it with a totally blank slate :) I know what you mean, though. I always try to read the book first before the movie for that reason. Give the book a try!

Dune is such the classic that inspired new sci-fi writers. I've got to get past the movie thing with books, but like you, I try to read the book first. i.e: I recently finished To Kill a Mockingbird, and could not get Gregory Peck's face out of my mind as Atticus.
