Eric Dalton | 2 comments Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas and wow, I have thoughts.

First off, I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I went in thinking it was going to be a typical YA fantasy with an assassin who's secretly soft-hearted, and while there’s a bit of that, Celaena Sardothien completely took me by surprise. She’s vain, arrogant, bookish, and brutally competent — and somehow, it works? I found myself weirdly invested in a character who can shift from obsessing over dresses to literally snapping necks.

The story starts with a competition to become the King’s Champion — basically a fight-to-the-death audition among criminals and killers. But what kept me hooked wasn’t just the action, it was the world-building peeking in around the edges: a kingdom where magic has mysteriously vanished, creepy Wyrdmarks appearing in dark corners, and a deeper plot slowly unraveling.

Now, is it perfect? No. The love triangle felt a bit predictable at times, and I think the first book leans more toward setup than payoff — but there’s enough intrigue and tension to keep the pages turning. Also, Sarah J. Maas has a knack for laying foundations that she builds on big time later in the series (which, yes, I’ve already started).

If you're into badass female protagonists, slow-burn world-building, and a little bit of court drama sprinkled with sword fights and mystery — Throne of Glass is definitely worth picking up.

Can’t wait to see how much darker and more complex the story gets from here. I’ve been warned that things really escalate in book 3…
