Wright Brothers VS Amelia Earhart

Team Challenge
November 1-30

Team Members:
✔️Ashley
Shaw
✔️Trinia

Check-in:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Challenge rules:
*No graphic novels, poetry or cookbooks allowed.
*Follow your own time zone. If you finish the book between the theme dates in your time zone, it counts.
*You must be able to justify how your book fits the theme. Example: If the theme is cats, then your book can have a cat on the cover, a cat in the book, can be all about cats, etc. If you can justify it, then it will work. Let's keep this easy and you may be creative with your links to the themes.
Standard Rules Apply

Themes
Nov 1-7 Pilots
Nov 8-14 Air Force/Navy
Nov 15-21 Airports/Airplanes
Nov 22-30 Search and Rescue

*Theme Start & End times are based on your time zone. So the Pilots theme will end on Nov 7th at midnight in the time zone that you live in.*

So, I've never done a Theme Wars, we just read and try to read for the Theme? Should we have a spreadsheet to keep track of books?

Trinia, have you done Theme Wars before?

message 5: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 522 comments Hey Ashley!

Yes, I did my first one last month. We have a link that Donna will add under message 1, where we can enter our books once finished.

You basically read any book that you can connect with the theme of the week.
So we start with Nov 1-7 Pilots
The length of the book gives us more points.

I have a few books in mind, that I found the word Pilot in text. Otherwise if you have a Pilot as a character or other type of connection should work.

It's fun but this theme is not tops on my list, so I aimed for 1-2 books each week.

Alright! Sounds good. I definitely agree this is a challenging Theme.

Would a Spell Out in the Title be too obscure for the theme? All the letters of PILOT in the title?

If you can explain how it fits, then it will count. This challenge allows you to be creative.

We're doing pretty good! I don't think I'll have another Pilot book before the end of the day! Next is Air Force/Navy, which might be even harder!

message 21: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 522 comments I’ve got one more I just finished .
Of course it would have worked for the next round too. I have a couple lined up but yes, way harder!

message 22: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 522 comments Found both NAVY and AIR Force in my Zombie book! LOL

wow!
I am sick, so I only managed to finish my audiobook yesterday, no mention of anything aviation there.

message 24: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 522 comments No worries! Feel better, seems it the season for getting ill 🤧

message 25: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 522 comments Just wanted to double check for this week… is it Navy or Air Force? Or both in one book? I assumed it was one or the other and got lucky with both in a book.

message 26: by Ashley, The Tipsy Challenger (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) | 5645 comments Mod
I think it's just one or the other. I just got lucky also with my spell out...

Trinia | 522 comments Nice! 😄 it was impressive Ash! 🤩

Donna (dkflynn33) | 7470 comments Mod
It can be one, or it can be both. You just have to be able to explain how it fits the theme.

Getting there! I'm 90% sure it's just a sinus infection, and not the flu that's been running through my house! I unfortunately am prone to them, even after having sinus surgery this year!

message 31: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 522 comments Perfect, thanks Donna 😁

message 32: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 522 comments I'm assuming we probably shouldn't use the color Navy as justification for this one... what do y'all think?

@Donna! What's your thoughts?

The book I just finished referenced the Marines (I think, I'm going to go back a double-check), of course...

What do we think of this quote, though?

"I was thinking more Nautical Navy, Mystic Gray for the trim and porch."

I don't have a page number, bc I was listening on audiobook and I'm not sure I could find it again. When you said the color thing, I had an epiphany.... I looked it up in google books to find the exact quote.

I think I'm going to post and ask forgiveness later if it a no-no.

I would say the fact that it says nautical Navy is a plus! lol

That's what I'm hoping for!!

message 37: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 522 comments My book had ... "Navy blue to the east." not sure that's as legit!

message 38: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 693 comments I just added one cuz it has Navy blue and gold for the football team colors. And the Air Force/Navy game is a famous sports rivalry whenever it’s played so I would say the color works for this challenge. I’m still hoping to finish two others that match the theme perfectly before the deadline.

message 39: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 693 comments The famous rivalry is the Army/Navy but the connection to the football team colors was my point there. Autocorrect is not doing me any favors today. Lol

message 40: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 522 comments Sounds justified to me 😁

Phew! I was so busy this week at work that I got nothing accomplished with reading. I'm trying to decide what constitutes Search and Rescue.
I managed to finish Library of Souls, which involves a "search and rescue..." I think I'll post it.

Crap! I finished it the 21st! Ugh! I'll have to hope for another try...

message 49: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 693 comments Search and Rescue is a bit more challenging. I thought about using this Daughter of the Pirate King (Daughter of the Pirate King, #1) by Tricia Levenseller cuz it fits my other challenge I have to finish. But I think going with it looks like she is searching for something on the cover is pushing the theme boundary a bit.

Yeah, it is a tough one. I got lucky with the book I posted because they were rescuing animals.
Maybe finding Search and Rescue in text (maybe not together) is ok.
And for a long title search and rescue
Or
An author with the initials SR
Or a book with “and” in the title like Search AND Rescue.

Just brainstorming 🙃

I found this cute series Desert Rescue (K-9 Search and Rescue #1) by Lisa Phillips , fairly short books in the series. Just not sure I’ll get to them. Didn’t get much reading in today, just finished a book which I haven’t found a fit for … yet 😏
