This is the Pre-Read thread for the December 2022 Classics selection. This month we will be reading The Crucible by Arthur Miller.

Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? Why did you choose to read this classic play? Have you seen the play performed on stage?

Jan Z (jrgreads) | 404 comments I have seen it performed twice. Once by community theatre and the other a university production. The university production was far superior. The audience reaction to the final scene was palpable. I will definitely be reading it again. I have read it before but would recommend seeing it in person if you get the chance.

Ted Keen | 8 comments A classic that I haven’t read. That’s why I joined this group. Thanks for the recommendation. I look forward to reading it with you all.

Red | 28 comments We studied this text in school (Higher Drama) and did a read through which I really enjoyed. I don't remember much of the analysis portion, though if I searched my old school stuff, I'd most likely find my writing on it.

My class also went to see a small production of it in Edinburgh in a church, the first time I saw it performed, which I still remember being a great experience and gave me a newfound appreciation for the text.

I think it's def worth revisiting for BOTM.

Jan Z (jrgreads) | 404 comments It is a commentary on the "red" scare, the witch hunt for communists of the 1950s in the United States. Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin was the big leader here.

Oh yeah, Miller got in a bit of heat with that himself and was questioned 3 years after he wrote The Crucible.

Kim WV | 168 comments I’m joining in. I’ve never read it but it’s been on my TBR list for a while. I have never seen it on the stage but I did see the 1996 film with Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder. Looking forward to it!

Gem | 15 comments I never read this book. I chose an audiobook for this selection. I started listening this morning. I'm not sure if this is in every edition but the one I am listening to has historical notes. It's absolutely fascinating and really helpful to delve a bit deeper into the history and the events of the times.

Megan | 475 comments I read this in both high school and college; my sister’s high school boyfriend and one of my friends were in a local production of the play. I remember it being very impactful.

fleurette | 198 comments I enjoyed this book much more then I expected. I'm so glad I read it, especially since if it wasn't for this group read, I probably wouldn't have done it.
