I can't believe that this is a New York Times bestselling series. I had trouble getting into this story until maybe the 70% mark. Then it got good. Then the story really picked up and got moving. This could have probably been a story that could have been finished in 300 pages or less.
So 3 sisters, triplets, who have special gifts, during their Ascension Year to become Queen as they are all in line to become Queen, they have to kill one another as only 1 can be Queen. There is the Elemental Queen who has the gift to controlling weather and fire. The Naturalist Queen who can control plants and animals and can have a familiar animal like a bird, dog, bear, cougar, pretty much any animal that acts as an extension of them, and the Poisoner Queen who can't die when eating anything with Poison. The whole book you go through thinking Kathrine and Arsinoe are giftless and then at the end PLOT TWIST, ARSINOE who is a Naturalist is now immune to Poison and is actually a Poisoner. Than what is Kathrine? Is she instead a Poisoner a Naturalist instead. I want to know. I get this feeling they were mixed up.
Kinda pissed me off and made the story dull. Really I shouldn't read the rest of the series but I may just read book 2 to get answers. 436 pages though? Please Kendare you could have wrapped this novel in less than 300. Don't drag out your stories because you loose the reader. Maybe your audiobook would have been better.
