Ariel | 126 comments Hmmm, is this the year that I finally pick up A Discovery of Witches??? Or will I delete it and go with Demon Copperhead instead?

Christine H | 496 comments After only managing 34 books last year, I've found new energy and I'm also channeling some decluttering motivation - this helped me admit that I'm not going to read War & Peace or Count of Monte Cristo, and I just deleted stuff until I got to something I'm actually excited about - The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments Got this prompt out the way early and I've finished my review copy of A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon. Once all the introductions are out the way it's quite fast paced, so if any of you want to engineer it to be your longest book, it's a good option.

Nice. I seriously want to read this one but I can't get over the length. I don't have the patience a lot of times for long books.

That's my issue too, not gonna lie... I'll check it out on audio though which should make things easier :)

Heather (heatherbowman) | 904 comments I read Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray.

I didn't enjoy the reading experience, although I do remember liking the story when I watched the movie with Reese Witherspoon. At least I've crossed another classic off of my lengthy list of books I think I should at least try to read.

Sherri Harris | 782 comments I read ...And Ladies of the Club. 5 stars.

message 60: by LeahS (new)

LeahS | 491 comments I read The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith (1012 pages).

I often give my husband one of the Strike series for Christmas and then read it myself, but I looked at this in the shops, and thought no, it is just too long for a thriller/mystery.

Then a friend lent me her copy, so it went back on the TBR list. I enjoyed the plot in this book much more than in Troubled Blood, where the Strike/Robin relationship was more interesting. However, if you want to read it, I would certainly recommend a ebook, because (a) it is physically cumbersome to read (b) with a crime book, you want to be able to check back on all the clues, and the book is just to long to do this in the paper version.

Karen Witzler (kewitzler) | 129 comments Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die - one of the Groups on this site - is doing a year-long Big Book Read of Clarissa, or, the History of a Young Lady by Samuel Richardson. They've just started. It is an epistolary novel of 1534 pages from 1748.

Years ago, someone gave me that "1001 books to read before you die" book. I guess I'm gonna live forever, because there's no way I could get through another Samuel Richardson book after Pamela. The entire second half of the book consists of the couple paying each other compliments and telling their neighbors the story of his kidnaping & imprisoning her as a cute "how-we-met" story. The only reason to endure it was to better enjoy Henry Fielding's satires of it, Joseph Andrews / Shamela.

For my longest book, I see I'm one of many tackling Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. I see why it's been compared with Austen. I'm enjoying the slightly snarky narrative voice, a comedy of manners in a world where magic is ever so slightly improper.

Les Miserables is also my longest book, but it's only 1468pg in my edition. I'm currently reading it though, but am doing a hybrid reading and listening, which has been extremely helpful. It has been by turns very interesting and very boring. I'm also finding the sheer length a trial because my normal reading tendencies are to read books in the 300-400 range, which still means I can generally read 4 books in the time of this one. I started it on 3/13 and am about 600p into it though.

Oh dear, this one is on my list too. What didn't you like about it?

message 68: by Julie (new)

Julie | 13 comments This one was of no concern in years past but this year seems impossible. My longest is I know this much is true by Wally lamb followed by Mists of Avalon which was gifted to me as a teen and I Never read. I have tried multiple times but just can’t get into it so think it’s getting moved to DNF. I like to pair long books with their audiobooks as I get distracted but I know this much is true doesn’t have one. Contemplating priory of Orange tree as it’s 3rd highest page count.

message 69: by Jane (new)

Jane Fudger The longest book is A Man Without Qualities by Robert Musil. My edition is 1770 pages[ including intro and notes]

Sorry to hear that book has become a DNF for you. Sometimes that book just isn't for everyone. I read it when I was twelve and loved it.

It’s your challenge, whichever works best for you!

message 73: by Velvet (new)

Velvet | 2 comments This prompt has led me to discard a few books already. I find that if it disinterests me in the least, it’s out. Life’s too short to read a long book that can’t hold my interest.

I read it last year. I thought it was a pretty easy read, for such a long book. Hope that helps.

It does help. I'm getting the audiobook from the library and I have a copy on Kindle. They are probably different translations, so it might be fun to follow along with the audiobook and see the differences. I start tonight!

Just a hint for you, I only skimmed the French parts. They were untranslated in the main text. Even though I did study French for 5 years, it would have taken forever if I tried to read all that. Maybe next time.

Anshita (_book_freak) | 268 comments I am reading Names on a Map by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. It's 460 pages. This year I have mostly read novellas and I generally do not read books more than 300 pages so this is going to be a challenge. Since its HHM, it will work for that too.

Although, I have read It by Stephen King for a previous reading prompt 'a book with more than 1000 pages'. It was 1168 pages.
