This is the time of the year where children wait to try and catch a glimpse of Santa Claus. So lets find out who Santa is and the stories about him.

Duration: December 1, 2022 - February 28. 2023
Level 1: 5-12 tasks
Level 2: 13 or more.
Tasks can be done as many times as needed.

TASKS

🎅 Read a book where a character eats candy. (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #).
🎅 Read a book with a character who is considered naughty. (Your interpretation).

3. Santa is generally depicted as a portly, jolly, white-bearded man, often with spectacles, wearing a red coat with white fur collar and cuffs, white-fur-cuffed red trousers, red hat with white fur, and black leather belt and boots, carrying a bag full of gifts for children. He is commonly portrayed as laughing in a way that sounds like "ho ho ho".
🎅 Read a book with either a red, black or white cover. (Show cover.)
🎅 Read a book with a character who has a beard.
🎅 Read a book that makes you laugh.

4. This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century due to the significant influence of the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas". This image has been maintained and reinforced through song, radio, television, children's books, family Christmas traditions, films, and advertising.
🎅 Read a book that is tagged as poetry.
🎅 Read a book set in the 19th century.
🎅 Read A book where the first letter of each title word can be found in THOMAS NAST. (All words count).

As England no longer kept the feast day of Saint Nicholas on 6 December, the Father Christmas celebration was moved to 25 December to coincide with Christmas Day

🎅 Read a book with the word peace in the text. (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #).

7. The tradition of Santa Claus being said to enter dwellings through the chimney is shared by many European seasonal gift-givers. In pre-Christian Norse tradition, Odin would often enter through chimneys and fire holes on the solstice. In the Italian Befana tradition, the gift-giving witch is perpetually covered with soot from her trips down the chimneys of children's homes. In the tale of Saint Nicholas, the saint tossed coins through a window, and, in a later version of the tale, down a chimney when he finds the window locked. In Dutch artist Jan Steen's painting, The Feast of Saint Nicholas, adults and toddlers are glancing up a chimney with amazement on their faces while other children play with their toys. The hearth was held sacred in primitive belief as a source of beneficence, and popular belief had elves and fairies bringing gifts to the house through this portal.
🎅 Read a book where a character lights a fire.
🎅 Read a book with a MC who is a child.
🎅 Read a book with a window on the cover. (Show cover.)

8. Santa Claus's home is traditionally said to include a residence and a workshop where he is said to create often with the aid of elves the gifts delivers. Some stories and legends include a village, inhabited by his helpers, surrounding his home and shop.
🎅 Read a book where a character has a workshop.
🎅 Read a book with an elf in the story or on the cover. (Show cover).
🎅 Read a book about a legend.

09. In North American tradition Santa is said to live at the North Pole, which according to Canada Post lies within Canadian jurisdiction in postal code H0H 0H, although postal codes starting with H are usually reserved for the island of Montréal in Québec. On 23 December 2008, Jason Kenney, Canada's minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, formally awarded Canadian citizenship status to Santa Claus.
🎅 Read a book with a character who is an immigrant.
🎅 Read a book where the first letter of the location can be found in JASON KENNEY.
🎅 Read a book set on an island.
