Jan January (janjanuary) | 1 comments Hi! and happy December as well❤️

I just finish Messy Roots by Laura Gao. This is a wonderful story about a Wuhanese person in America during Covid-19 and also searching for her gender. And a great opportunity to learn about Wuhan.

I'll still have a lot of graphic novels on my list, but I can add more from you.

By the way, I am Jan and I am very new here, so nice to meet you.

Chad | 1404 comments Last week's adventures in comic books.

Heavenly Demon Reborn! Vol 1 by O'Emperor Heavenly Demon Reborn! Vol 1 ★★
This bored me to tears. It's about a guy who is reincarnated into a cult where he wants to take revenge on some of the members. He's young and it's about how he trains alone for the next ten years.

The Panic (Comixology Originals) Ten Survivors by Neil Kleid The Panic (Comixology Originals): Ten Survivors ★★
A subway train derails while going under the river into Manhattan. It's post-Pandemic and there's all kinds of arguments from both the Left and the Right about utterly pointless things when their goal should be getting out from under the river. Nothing is explained, especially the terribly ambivalent ending.

Avatar The High Ground, Volume 3 by Sherri L. Smith Avatar: The High Ground, Volume 3 ★★★
A solid prequel to the new film. Jake Sully and Ney'tiri now have a family. The 2nd volume pretty much sets up this finish.

Outpost Zero The Complete Collection by Sean Kelley McKeever Outpost Zero: The Complete Collection ★★★
A story about a space colony that was lost on an icy planet decades ago. They are slowly losing their knowledge of how things work. The story revolves around some 14 year old kids who survive after one of them commits suicide.

Eve Online Capsuleer Chronicles by Sam Maggs Eve Online: Capsuleer Chronicles ★★
Like a lot of Dark Horse tie-in books, it requires you to have played the game to know at all what's going on. It's about the backstories of four capsuleers in this space battle they can't win.

Wiper by John Dunning Wiper ★★★
Some solid future noir. It's about a private detective. She's a Wiper meaning that she wipes out her memory after each case. A robot hires her to find a missing person which eventually takes her off Earth.

The Golem of Venice Beach by Chanan Beizer The Golem of Venice Beach ★★★
Chanan Biezer's debut graphic novel is about a 400-year old golem surviving in Venice Beach. He's protecting the last family of the Rabbi who created him.

Project MK-Ultra Vol. 2 Sex, Drugs, and the CIA by Brandon Beckner Project MK-Ultra Vol. 2: Sex, Drugs, and the CIA
I couldn't follow this at all. The story is super-complicated and lots of drugs are given making the storytelling suspect.

The Mare by Seth Christian Martel The Mare ★★★
A story about a young, down on her luck woman who suffers from sleep paralysis. Nothing is working so that she can sleep soundly.

Destroy All Monsters (Reckless, #3) by Ed Brubaker Destroy All Monsters ★★★
It's 1988 now and Ethan is feeling old as he takes on a case about a shady real estate developer. I think that's part of the reason why I didn't like this book as much as the rest of the Reckless series, the weak villain. I typically love anything Brubaker and Phillips touch.

Nomen Omen, Vol. 1 Total Eclipse of the Heart by Marco B. Bucci Nomen Omen, Vol. 1: Total Eclipse of the Heart ★★★
This book is seriously complicated. It's urban fantasy. It's about a color blind girl who only sees magic in color. There's some stuff tucked away in there about fairies and old Irish gods. I think multiple reads may be necessary to figure it all out once I've finished all of it.

Zatanna The Jewel of Gravesend by Alys Arden Zatanna: The Jewel of Gravesend ★★
Another DC YA reimagining of one of their characters. This is about a rich teenage Zatanna Starr (It's not even the correct last name.) living at an elephant-shaped hotel at Coney Island. Her parents, Ezra and Lola, are illusionists with a show at their hotel, expecting their daughter to follow in their footsteps.

Buffy '97 by Jeremy Lambert Buffy '97 ★★
A pointless and not very good one-shot for the 25th anniversary and 15 pages of stories from the 25th anniversary special plus some reprint stories.

Spider-Man The Darkest Hours by Jim Butcher Spider-Man: The Darkest Hours ★★★★
Jim Butcher, the author of The Dresden Files once wrote a very good Spider-Man novel.

Arkham City - The Order of the World by Dan Watters Arkham City - The Order of the World ★★
A Vertigo take on some of Batman's weirder villains. It's set after A-Day when Arkham was destroyed and all the inmates went free. Dr. Joy happened to be off work that day and was one of the few people working at Arkham to escape death. Now she's working to "capture" the inmates as she descends into madness.

Young Justice, Book Six (Young Justice, #6) by Peter David Young Justice, Book Six ★★★
This is alright. It finishes off the original Young Justice series by Peter David and Todd Nuack.

Artifacts, Volume 1 by Ron Marz Artifacts, Volume 1 ★★★
Longtime comics Witchblade and The Darkness are the foundations for this Top Cow event series. Turns out there are actually 13 artifacts that give people powers and if they are all combined the world will be "born anew". This is all setup for the series as the users of the artifacts align into two factions for the rest of the series.

Supernatural Origins (Supernatural Graphic Novel, #1) by Peter Johnson Supernatural: Origins ★★★
A John Winchester origin story. It takes place shortly after Mary's death. John is lost and learns to become a Hunter while abandoning a young Sam and Dean for awhile.

Still hard at work on the Reading Challenge! Next year I won't wait til the last minute, lol :)

So far this week I've read:

Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow - I thought this was decently good, and I was super excited to read a Zdarsky Spider-Book, but I hate when Spidey is not a Good Boy(tm). Still gave it 4 stars though.

Witch Hat Atelier, Vol. 1 - I can already tell this book is going to become a problem for me. I'm itching to read the rest now but I need to finish the rest of the reading challenge books first!

Vinland Saga Omnibus, Vol. 1 - I love all things Viking and Norse myth so this was a pretty easy win for me - didn't do a bad job on the historical info either so this was a fun read for me! I do want to continue this series but am kind of intimidated by just how HUGE it is - this volume is ~500 pages, with 12 more omnibus volumes available, am I ready to sign on for 6,000 pages of Viking manga?? I might be.

The Great Gatsby A Graphic Novel Adaptation by K. Woodman-Maynard The Great Gatsby: A Graphic Novel Adaptation
This adaptation of The Great Gatsby was a refreshingly lighter representation of what I feel is a pretty dark story. I really enjoyed how the artist represented some of Fitzgerald's metaphors right in the art. Also, the narration is set off from the dialogue by being worked into the art, such as inside shadows.

Shuna's Journey by Hayao Miyazaki Shuna's Journey
I'm very excited that First Second released an English translation of this early work of Hayao Miyazaki. It's very much a Miyazaki story, with elements of human cruelty and human effects on the environment all wrapped up in an ultimately sweet story and beautiful art.

Max (maxwellatewell) | 57 comments Spider-Man Miles Morales, Vol. 2 by Brian Michael Bendis
Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Vol. 2
I haven't read Civil War II yet, but I don't think it railroaded the story too much. Framing it through Miles' reaction to the events helped. Chad was right, I liked Miles a lot more as I kept reading.

The New Mutants Classic, Vol. 6 by Chris Claremont
The New Mutants Classic, Vol. 6
This one starts with Danielle on torn between saving her friends and living a normal life. I like that we see she has a whole life outside the New Mutants.

Hunter X Hunter, tome 13 by Yoshihiro Togashi Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 14 (Hunter x Hunter, #14) by Yoshihiro Togashi
Hunter X Hunter, tome 13 & Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 14
The Greed Island arc is considered by most to be the weakest of Hunter x Hunter. And yeah, it's not as good as the rest. Gon's dad make a video game in real life. We get a detailed explanation of how it works and Gon's really good at rock, paper scissors. Before we get payoff for the game lore, we get several explanations of Nen/magic system lore. It's tedious, excessive and I already knew it from watching the anime.
There's far from nothing to enjoy during Greed Island. Gon getting insulted the survivors said his Dad's game was killing people is heartbreaking. Togashi could have cut half the game rules and most of the Phantom Troop's involvement and it would flowed much better. I want to read a better version of Greed Island.

Giant Days, Vol. 3 (Giant Days, #3) by John Allison
Giant Days, Vol. 3
I don't have a big paragraph for this one. I didn't notice the artist change. I still liked it a lot. Not enough Daisy in this one.

Civil War Young Avengers & Runaways by Zeb Wells
Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways
This one spoils some big parts of the Runaways. They are giving men war flashbacks to 2000s fashion. I like it so far tho.

Stitch and the Samurai Volume 2 by Hiroto Wada
Stitch and the Samurai Volume 2
This one's cute. Some plot actually happens at the end, so I think they've exhausted every joke about Stitch in ancient Japan. I'll definitely pick up the last one when it is translated.

Sirens of the Norse Sea Book 1 - The Waters of Skagerrak (Sirens of the Norse Sea, #1) by Françoise Ruscak Sirens of the Norse Sea: Book 1 - The Waters of Skagerrak ★★★
It's sirens vs. Vikings with trolls somewhere in the middle.

100 Bullets, Vol. 1 First Shot, Last Call by Brian Azzarello 100 Bullets, Vol. 1: First Shot, Last Call ★★★★★
What if someone completely screwed up your life irrevocably and someone came up to you and said here's an untraceable gun with a 100 bullets and irrefutable evidence that so and so is the culprit. Would you take revenge?

Aquamen Vol. 1 by Chuck Brown Aquamen Vol. 1 ★★★
This closes out what was started in Aquaman: The Becoming and Black Manta. Atlantean sleeper agents are blowing themselves up in strategic locations on the surface. Both Aquamen, Black Manta, Mera, Tempest and Tula are out to stop them.

Ham-Let A Shakespearean Mash-Up by Jim Burnstein Ham-Let: A Shakespearean Mash-Up
A "retelling" of Hamlet with anthropomorphic characters.

Show's End Trade Paperback by Anthony Cleveland Show's End Trade Paperback ★★★
Pretty solid for an independent comic, although rough around the edges. It's about a girl with a monster inside who joins a circus in 1920's Georgia.

John Carpenter's Asylum, City of Angels, Hearts of Darknes (John Carpenter's Asylum #1) by Bruce Jones John Carpenter's Asylum, City of Angels, Hearts of Darkness ★★★
Very much an adult read. A defrocked priest and a cop go after a demonic spirit who possesses people.

John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction Twitch by Duane Swierczynski John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction: Twitch ★★★
In 1977, we received what we thought was a signal from another star and sent a response. Four decades later we received a response, a response that turns people into homicidal maniacs.

John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction The Standoff by David J Schow John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction: The Standoff ★★★
Aliens crash land on a prison and start taking over humans while causing a prison break.

Re: Max: I LOVE Giant Days! Daisy is also my favorite character. It's such a good slice-of-life series.

---

10 Dance 1 by Satoh Inoue 10 Dance 1
I read all of 10 Dance that I could find in English (about 6 volumes). I've never read a manga this fast. It's a story of two men training each other to dance in their specialities so they can compete in a huge competition, and they fall for each other along the way. It gives Yuri On Ice vibes.

Art Brut Volume 1 by W Maxwell Prince Art Brut Volume 1
Like Mike on this week's episode, I read Art Brut #1 (the link above is for the volume, which is all that's on Goodreads). It combines a mystery with fantasy or maybe just magical realism, and the art gets kind of psychedelic. There's commentary about art intellectualism vs enjoyment just under the surface of the story. I'm looking forward to more of this.

Chad | 1404 comments Last week's adventures in comic books. Caught up on a lot of Mad Cave Studios comics on hoopla last week.

John Carpenter's Tales for a Halloween Night ★★★
I have to say that latter editions of this series have far better creepy tales in them. I found this initial volume lukewarm even though there are some bigger creators involved.

John Carpenter's Tales for a Halloween Night, Volume 2 ★★★★
12 tales of terror, some better than others. Most pretty great. I did skip the interstitials. It's the same art page with a little lead in that takes too long to read and doesn't really add anything to the story.

John Carpenter's Tales for a Halloween Night: Volume 3 ★★★★
There was some really good stories in this edition. Plus the interstituals actually belonged and were actually in comic book form for once. If you like horror comics, this annual Halloween anthology is a good time.

John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction: Surviving Nuclear Attack ★★
Some hunting buddies got lost in the woods and come across an underground bunker where a family from the 50's thought WWIII happened and lived and died in there. These hunting buddies get trapped as well when one of them breaks a leg.

Battlecats Vol.1: The Hunt for the Dire Beast ★★★
Thundercats in a generic D&D setting. The Battlecats are a group of peak warriors in service to their king on a quest to kill someone.

Battlecats Vol. 2: Fallen Legacy ★★★
There's a lot of unanswered questions in this slow decline of the king. This evil faction of darkats seems to have no motivation than evil for evil's sake and the love of a Lizard God instead of a Lion God. It's all just an OK D&D style story.

Battlecats Vol. 3: Hero of Legend ★★
The bad guys are just bad to be bad. It's all very simplistic storytelling and just doesn't really keep your attention. The art is very good though.

Battlecats: Tales of Valderia ★★
Some weak stories that don't have much to do with the rest of the series. The second half of the book is text pages and art setting up the world.

Bountiful Garden ★★★★
Someone else mentioned Alien meets The Ruins and I thought that was very appropriate.

Honor and Curse Vol.1: Torn ★★★★
I thought this was some solid Feudal Japan comics. It's about a man whose parents were murdered as a child. He's taken in by a fighting school but also has a tengu (Japanese demon) inside of him that he is also fighting.

Midnight Task Force Vol. 1: Hidden Voices ★★
This was rough. Nothing adds up or is explained (probably because a 2nd volume was promised but never happened.) It's about a crusty Detroit police detective 30 years in the future. He was originally part of an elite military team and almost died. Now he's on the track of a serial killer.

My Buddy, Killer Croc ★★★★
A solid and simple read for kids. Andy is the new kid in school. He just moved to Gotham to live with his Aunt after something unsaid happened to his father. Andy has a severe burn across one cheek from spilling scalding water on it. Andy meets Killer Croc and they become friends but Croc has Andy stealing for him.

Hollywood Trash ★★
A way too complicated story about rich and successful members of a cult being sent to kill two garbage men for accidentally offending their leader.

Hellfighter Quin ★★★
The Harlem Hellfighter is one of the Nameless. Part of one of the clans that determines who controls a power to gives superpowers. It's a Mortal Combat type of story.

Pantomime Vol. 1 ★★★★★
Easily the best thing Christopher Sebela has done. It's about a deaf sister and her mute brother. They are sent to a special needs school after their mother passes away. There they make some friends and start committing heists since no one would consider a group of deaf kids committing robberies.

Over the Ropes Vol. 1 ★★★
This is about as good as a straight-forward wrestling story from the 90's could get.

Rv9 Trade Paperback
I didn't know what was going on in this comic. It's about a group of assassins that's trying to cause some kind of revolution in Italy because they say "Por La Revolution" (Yes, I know this is Spanish, not Italian but I don't think the author did.) at least 15 times without explaining what is revolting.

Savage Bastards TPB ★★★
A Western about an immortal who has established his own little fiefdom out West. He prides himself on fathering tons of bastards who help him maintain power.

Marvel Classic Novels - Spider-Man: The Darkest Hours Omnibus ★★★★
Three prose novels from the J. Michael Straczynski era of Amazing Spider-Man
The Darkest Hours by Jim Butcher: ☆☆☆☆
Down These Mean Streets by Keith R.A. DeCandido: ☆☆☆☆
Drowned in Thunder by Christopher Bennett: ☆☆☆

The Mutts Autumn Diaries
A terrible comic strip that survives off people's warm fuzzies they receive from their pets.

In. by Will McPhail In.
I have seen some comic panels by Will McPail online so when I saw this at the library I grabbed it quickly. The story is about a man who realizes he never has an honest conversation with anyone and longs for real connection. The book is emotionally raw and occasionally hilarious. The art panels showing the feeling of connecting to someone was my favorite part.

Night of the Living Cat Volume 1 by Hawkman Night of the Living Cat Volume 1
I grabbed Night of the Living Cat because there was a cat on the cover and it looked like light horror. It's basically a zombie movie but as a manga with cats as the monsters. It's ridiculous but still suspenseful. I had a good time with it.

This was my favorite comic I read last year. I know some people have trouble with the perfectly round eyeballs but I love how the book talks about connecting to people. And the scenes where the main character does make a connection are SO well done. It's at times heartbreaking, at others it really made me laugh.

Max (maxwellatewell) | 57 comments My job is going well and I was able grab some stuff.

Spider-Man Reign by Kaare Andrews
Spider-Man: Reign
What fascinated me about this book has been overshadowed by a single factoid. This is the book where Peter kills Mary Jane with his radioactive semen. I've never even heard the title said out loud.
The metaphor is that Peter loving Mary Jane, literally and figuratively, killed her. He's an old, broken man hallucinating around his apartment. I enjoyed this one, but I also haven't read Dark Knight Rises. The worst of the book tho, the backgrounds. They're either vague blobs or like walls in a ps2 game. Lastly, J. Jonah Jameson fits Spider-Man entire mask in camera and that bothers me.

The Terrorism Myth (Journey Into Mystery, #3) by Kieron Gillen
The Terrorism Myth
Kid Loki accidently creates a litter of Hellhounds and loses his magic. Then, he teams up Daimon Helstrom to stop Nightmare from becoming even more powerful. Fun story. It's a shame Kid Loki will probably never truly be adapted.

Saga of the Swamp Thing Book One by Alan Moore
Saga of the Swamp Thing: Book One
Having finished this one, I understand the hype around Alan Moore, but the art by Stephen Bissette and John Totleben is equally as good. I do think it's funny Jason Woodrue uses his plant powers to like overgrown the whole town and Swamp Thing's first thought is to start punching him.

The Red King by Heylenne
The Red King
Webtoons are a lot easier to read on my break at work. I picked this one b/c I wanted that highly rendered Solo Leveling artstyle but I didn't want to read an SL clone. I'm enjoying it, but it takes awhile for the mystery to be interesting and the supernatural parts to comeback.

Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 15 (Hunter x Hunter, #15) by Yoshihiro Togashi Hunter X Hunter, tome 16 by Yoshihiro Togashi
Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 15 & Hunter X Hunter, tome 16
The dodgeball game was better than the actual final fight. It was so refreshing to get action panels for a change.

Ajin Demi-Human, Vol. 10 (Ajin Demi-Human, #10) by Gamon Sakurai
Ajin: Demi-Human, Vol. 10
I paused reading Ajin b/c I would forget what happened in Blame if I took a break from reading it. The series is easy for me to beige. We meet Kei's mom and she actually looks like a woman in her late 40s. Lots of the author's character designs are so basic I didn't think he put much thought into them.

Chad | 1404 comments Last week's adventures in comic books.

Decorum★★★
Two sci-fi stories that take too long to come together, especially since only one of them was interesting.

The Colony★★★
A story about a real French colony started in 1903 by libertarians as the future of man. From the beginning you know it's all a matter of time before it heads South as I've never heard of this place.

The Detection Club - Volume 1
This was such a disappointment for such a great premise. Seven of the best mystery writers from the 1930's have formed a club to solve mysteries.

The Detection Club - Volume 2★★
A great idea but poor execution. The idea of a detective club filled with the biggest mystery writers of the 30's is a fantastic one. Too bad they just bumble around until the solution falls into their lap.

Magic 7, Vol. 1: Never Alone★★
A kids comic about (will be) 7 kids meeting who all have different powers. A ton of thefts are happening around the school and one kid is being blamed.

Modern Speed★★
I couldn't get into this strange story of a fevered night following a dancer and a woman who has decided to chronicle her life out of the blue.

Galaxy: The Prettiest Star★★★
This was alright. It's about an alien teenager and the aliens watching over them. They have been hiding on Earth for the last 6 years as a boy, but is in really a girl. It's filled with all kinds of trans-metaphors. I thought some of the impact was lost though by making them an alien instead of just a normal trans kid.

A Lapse in Judgement★★
Starts off strong with a judge looking back at his last case as an investigator before he became a judge. It's about a man who disappeared from a girlfriends house. The story gets very muddled though as it becomes more about the investigators private life and his breakup with a girlfriend.

Little Miss Cheery★★
An odd graphic novel about an ostrich farmer who murders his wife only to find her at home like nothing happened.

Welcome! (Mr. Ash Tuesday #1)★★★
Victor Tourtelle wakes up dead and a skeleton in a moon-like landscape. He eventually discovers everyone there is a skeleton and this may be purgatory.

Ozy and Millie★★★
Ozy and Millie is a cartoon strip about two nerdy fox kids going to school, doing chores and the like while commenting on society.

Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors - Rise Up!★★
A Godzilla story for children, I guess? It has a ton of the Toho stuff in it. Godzilla is setup as Earth's environmental protector. It's all told through a kid's Youtube channel and it's very boring.

The Beauty, Vol. 1★★★★★
Saw this as a Hoopla bonus borrow and decided to do a reread. It's just as good the second time around. Humans are obsessed with beauty. So if there was a new STD out there that made you beautiful would you seek it out?

Cliche Holiday★★
My first comic from Markovia Entertainment and it's about what I expected. It somewhat merges A Christmas Carol with a fantasy version of Bad Santa. The dialogue's bad and the plot doesn't make the most sense.

Shang-Chi vs. The Marvel Universe (Shang-Chi, #2)★★★★
Shang-Chi's father is dead and he's taken over his father's criminal organization. As we go through these 6 issues, the heroes lose trust in Shang-Chi, thinking he's turning shady while the many people he brings into the organization begin to think he's too honest and earnest.

Family of Origin (Shang-Chi, #3)★★★
The person behind Shang-Chi's betrayals is revealed and it's not great. There's a strong impetus to bring the comic inline with the movie so the book becomes all about Ta Lo and set up for a new Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings comic, the third Shang-Chi relaunch in two years.

The Long Shadow (Black Panther, #1)★★★★
A very nice change from Ta-Nahisi Coates impenetrable version of Black Panther. Wakanda is transitioning to a democracy slowly leaving T'Challa out in the cold. He also is still keeping secrets. (view spoiler)

Daredevil: Born Again★★★★
One of Daredevil's quintessential stories, Born Again. Longtime daredevil girlfriend, Karen Page returns. She's at her rock bottom, doing porn and heroin in South America. The only thing she has left is Daredevil's secret identity...

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear★★★★★
An expanded version of Daredevil's origin or a Daredevil Year's 1 and 2 if you will, right up until he puts on the mask.

Penguin & House, Vol. 1 by Akiho Ieda Penguin & House, Vol. 1
Penguin & House was an absolutely adorable read. Penguin (a penguin) tries to take care of his human roommate, but the roommate doesn't hardly notice. Luckily the human's friend notices Penguin for the delight they are.

The Girl From The Other Side Siúil, A Rún, Vol. 10 (The Girl from the Other Side, #10) by Nagabe The Girl From The Other Side: Siúil, A Rún, Vol. 10
I'm one volume from the end of this series, and it has only picked up steam. The mysteries of the Outsiders. Shiva, and Teacher are getting explained finally. I still love this series but it's taken a dark turn in comparison to the wholesome first volume.
