— Daniel J. Boorstin
As we Seek Out New Life & New Civilizations for the third quarter, you are invited to explore unknown regions here on Earth. To join, post a message below to let the challenge leader know how many books you plan to read.
1. The Darién Gap: So inhospitable is this 60-mile (96-kilometer) nugget of marshland and rainforest between Panama and Colombia that, even in our high-tech age of 3D printing, space tourism, and undersea railways, we still haven’t built a road that connects North and South America.
• Read a book set in an inhospitable - This World We Live In or dangerous place - Infidel, or where travel is often conducted with pirogues or canoes. - The Innocents Abroad
• Read a book set in Panama or Colombia, or a book with vegetation on the cover. -

2. Gangkhar Puensum: There remain dozens of mountains that have never been conquered. The tallest is almost certainly Gangkhar Puensum in Bhutan, which tops out at 24,836 feet (7,570 meters). The country prohibits mountaineering, partly because its biggest peaks are considered sacred, but also because it lacks suitable rescue services.
• Read a book set in a sacred place - The Orenda, or set in a place where some sport or activity is banned. - What the Night Sings
• Read a book set in Bhutan or Tibet, or a book with a mountain on the cover. -

3. Sakha: Officially the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the largest republic of Russia has a reputation for an extreme and severe climate, with the lowest temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere in winter at -32º F (-35.5º C). In summer, the mercury regularly tops 86º F (30º C).
• Read the longest book in your TBR shelf - Case Histories, or a book set during a cold winter - There Once Lived a Mother Who Loved Her Children, Until They Moved Back in: Three Novellas about Family By Petrushevskaya, Ludmila ( Author ) Paperback 2014 or a hot summer.

• Read a book set in Viet Nam - The Bride Test or Laos, or in a fictional or fantasy world. - Robopocalypse

• Read a book taking place under water, or about any form of marine life.
• Read a book set in the Caribbean, or a book with an aquatic animal on the cover. -

8. Cape Melville National Park: Walled off by forbidding granite boulders, Cape Melville is only around 900 miles (1,448 kilometers) from Brisbane, one of Australia’s biggest cities, but the rainforest habitat might as well be a world away. 1. The Guardians of the Galaxy is a fictional superhero team first appearing in comic book Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (January 1969). The initial roster consisted of Vance Astro, Martinex T'Naga, Captain Charlie-27, and Yondu Udonta. Later members included Stakar Ogord, Aleta Ogord, and Nikki.
a) Read a comic book (minimum page count not required) - El Deafo
c) Read a book that includes at least one photo within the text - The Climate Change Garden, UPDATED EDITION: Down to Earth Advice for Growing a Resilient Garden
2. The 'original' 2014 film is based on the 2008 comic book version. The film version of the Guardians of the Galaxy formed by accident. Their different adventures put them in the same place at the same time, and their shared goals lead to them facing Ronan together. The comic version of the Guardians, on the other hand, were formed in response to multiple attacks on the galaxy.
a) Read a book where an 'accident' of some kind happens in the story (use your judgement) - The Woman Inside
b) Read a book with MPG 'adventure' - Yellow Brick War
c) Read a book that was adapted into a film - A Man Called Ove
3. Peter Quill stands among the most powerful heroes in the MCU, but he's often presented as somewhat immature and impulsive. The Star-Lord in the comics proves far more competent. Not only does he rate alongside the best martial artists in Marvel Comics, but he's also a brilliant tactician and strategist.
a) Read a book where one of the characters has a royal title such as 'Lord' - Travels with My Aunt
b) Read a book with MPG 'new adult' or 'young adult' - A Study in Charlotte
c) Read a book with an impulsive character - Robin
4. Gamora in the films is a lot more reluctant of her history. She’s not used to enjoying her life on any level, and is more clearly traumatized by how Thanos had raised her. The comic Gamora is almost the polar opposite. When the Guardians form, she’s proud to be the Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy.
a) Read a book with a strong female MC - Infidel
b) Read a book with MPG 'historical' or 'history' - The Orenda
c) Read a book from the list Fantasy/Sci-Fi Books with Strong Female Characters - Parable of the Sower: A Graphic Novel Adaptation
5. The trilogy of Guardians has a romantic subplot focused on Star-Lord and Gamora. This romantic tension didn't exist in the comics until after the films were released.
a) Read a book with one man and one woman on the cover -

b) Read a book with MPG Romance - Graffiti Moon
c) Read a book from the list Favorite Gouples or Favorite Gay Gouples
6. In the films, Drax is established as a being with strength, but nothing especially impressive. He’s easily thrashed by Ronan the Accuser in the first film, who's specifically noted to rank far below Thanos in strength. In the comic version of Drax, the character was created to kill Thanos, and actually has killed Thanos multiple times in different storylines.
a) Read a book that features a character who is physically very strong - One Perfect Lie
b) Read a book tagged 'mythology' or includes mythological characters - The Pisces
c) Read a book from the list Best Books About Mythology
7. A running joke in the films is that Groot isn’t really able to talk...limited to "I am Groot". It comes from a development which occurred in one of the earlier books, where the character is only able to say his name. Interestingly, this comes from his vocal cords having hardened, and people who listen carefully can actually understand what he’s saying. In the comics he is a giant monster capable of saying complete sentences multiple times in the past. Groot means 'big' in Dutch.
a) Read a book with persons name in the title - Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore
b) Read a book with MPG 'paranormal'
c) Read a big book - more than 400 pages - The Other Mrs.
8. Rocket Raccoon is one of the founding members of the Guardians in both the comics and the films. However, the film version of Rocket is a bit more reluctant, and prefers to just work with his partner Groot.
The comic version witnessed the multiple wars which tore the galaxy apart and even helped Peter Quill fight back in multiple cases. Because of this, Rocket signed up to help protect the galaxy and avoid having to watch things escalate as bad as they did during the first two wars.
a) Read a book with an animal on the cover or in the story
b) Read a book tagged 'war' - Ender’s Game or 'military' - The Wreckage
c) Read a book from the list Best Talking-Animal Books - Watership Down
9. The Guardians in the comics have had a massive team over the years which included a variety of characters. Of course, Iron Man worked with the team in the films and Thor is teamed up with them now, so they’re no stranger to additional members. But the film Guardians are more like a found family with a tight roster. The comics have shuffled characters in and out frequently, such as Flash Thompson.
a) Read a book that includes a large family - Murder on an Irish Farm
b) Read a book with MPG 'family' - The Library of Lost and Found
c) Read a book with all the letters of T-E-A-M in the title/subtitle - There Once Lived a Mother Who Loved Her Children, Until They Moved Back in: Three Novellas about Family By Petrushevskaya, Ludmila ( Author ) Paperback 2014
10. The Guardians in the films are more of a comedic group than they are a serious super-team. As a result, their biggest actions have been working to stop Ronan and then working alongside the Avengers to fight against Thanos. In both cases, their own actions weren’t always key to saving everyone. In the comics, the Guardians have faced threats which would have wiped out creation itself, such as Adam Warlock in his Magus identity, and Peter Quill’s dad working with the Universal Church of Truth.
a) Read a book with some kind of 'threat' in the story line - Devil’s Delight
b) Read a book with MPG 'humor' - Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood
c) Read a book where someone is 'saved' by another person (use your judgement) - Dear Justyce
11. James Gunn co-wrote and directed the Marvel Studios adaptation of Guardians of the Galaxy, which was released on August 1, 2014. His brother, Sean, has a role in the film. He was born and raised in St. Louis. He has been writing and performing at the age of twelve making 8mm films.
a) Read a book that includes an 'film' or 'celebrity' related character - The Guest List
b) Read a book that includes brothers - The Bride Test
c) Read a book with the number 12 in the page count - Season of Dragons or original publication date
12. Stan Lee is considered a Marvel icon and appears in nearly every Marvel film in a cameo role. He appeared in both Gardens of the Galaxy 1 and 2 but his role in 3 was cut primarily due to his passing in November, 2018.
a) Read a book that includes a 'speaking' character with four letters in their name. - A Good Hanging
b) Read a book where a character dies in the story (not killed) - And Thereby Hangs a Tale
c) Read a book originally published in 2018 - An American Marriage
