Theresa | 15568 comments The Center for Fiction in Brooklyn, NY offers superior discussion groups, programs, and work shops throughout the year, and since pandemic they are virtual on Zoom. It was here I had my Proust excellent discussion group, and a much shorter one for The Master and Margarita.

Starting in January, the Center has this one, The Horrors thatt Haunt Us. It is led by an award winning auther/journalist on gothic horror, featuring books by 4 authors including Ruth Ware and Sylvia Moreno Garcia. I am seriously considering taking it.

Is this like an interactive book club style chat?

It is a led discussion. Usually the leader is there to get things started, and each session will have comments or questions to get discussion rolling and continue it. Everyone and anyone responds and even raises questions themselves. Initially it is likely to be a bit stilted until all get comfortable, unless a lot of them in the group are outspoken or have joined a number of the discussions. There are always a few 'frequent flyers' who year after year attend these discussions. Since the leader is a writer of mystery horror and also a journalist, I suspect she will be very skilled in generating discussion, and being a woman talking about women writers, it will be lively on that perspective.

When my Proust group was meeting, we initially of course were in person at the Center for Fiction building in Brooklyn. We only went virtual in lockdown and already had a rhythm for discussion that smoothly transitioned to virtual. The Master and Margarita one I took was more stilted at first but soon settled down. The leader was pretty good. It was also early in the pandemic. People are way more comfortable conducting book discussions on Zoom now.

I've decided to sign up and take it. I've already read the Sylvia Moreno - Garcia which is first so I don't have ot scramble to read it. Plus I like the look of all the others, and I like the feminist angle. You know I'll speak up and engage!

ETA: I enrolled! Already have the zoom link. Space clearly still available. They do limit size -- at least always before.

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Sounds like a lot of fun, but virtual with strangers causing me a bit of social anxiety so I will skip. Love the idea of it though!
