Kate, I was thinking Lager Queen of Minnesota. Its on my Trim and High Priority TBR. It may even be somebody's five star, I have to check.
Not trying to influence anyone, but Self Help would help(!) blow out candle #7 on Happy Birthday PBT - I was looking through the tag and found the book I have planned for that one on page 1 (Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking)

I’d be fine with any of them.
Anthologies is broader than short stories (which we had in 2021) because it can includes essays and multiple authors. It’s a nice way to try new authors. Paranormal, sci-fi, mystery, and literary fiction seem to have a lot of choices. Last night I added this to my tbr: My Own Devices: Essays From the Road on Music, Science, and Senseless Love
For food, I might read Elizabeth Acevedo- With the Fire on High. I would recommend Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
Self help is great for January. I would recommend power of habits, or atomic habits. I might go with the new Michelle Obama book, or Maybe You Should Talk to Someone which got raves from some pbt’ers.

Thanks! I wondered if Michelle Obama's The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times would be considered "self-help."

I have to laugh -- I have very busy shelves for 2 of the three though they are not named exactly the same. Books about Food and Cooking are a favorite reading topic of mine and I have everything from romances and cozy mysteries to chef autobiographies, non-fiction about food, and cookbooks.
I also have a shelf labeled short stories and essays where I park anything with 3 or more stories or novellas or essays on. The only 'anthologies' not included on that shelf would be poetry or plays (they each have a shelf) or something like the Norton Anthologies of Literature -- but I don't put the latter on shelves anyway because my copies date back to the 70s and I treat as reference books.
There's a lot of appealing flexibility in both food and anthologies, especially for the first month of the year when starting new challenges from Popsugar to Across the Year to PBT.

Oh good. Which particular ATY and pop sugar prompts are you thinking of?

I don't plan. I just read and see where it fits. Well except for something like longest and shortest from TBR.

Lager Queen was a clear five star read for me, it would also work for this month’s leadership tag.

For anthology i would also want to read one of the The Best American Short Stories 2022 annual anthologies. One of the reviews suggested picking a book based on an editor whose style you like.
The Best American Short Stories 2021 Jesmyn West
The Best American Short Stories 2020 Sittenfeld
The Best American Short Stories 2013 Strout
The Best American Short Stories 2006 Patchett
The Best American Short Stories 2011 Brooks
The Best American Short Stories 2007 King
The Best American Short Stories 2019 Doerr
The Best American Short Stories 2001 Kingsolver

Has anyone noticed others?

Does Self-help have more than a snowball's chance this time because January is prime time for self-improvement?
Are holiday celebrations and cookie-baking making us think of food and cozy books?
Do people view anthology as boring or versatile?
Who knows?

I'm hoping for "food"!

With the holidays it will be more difficult to get my books from the library. Four-day weekend holiday closures two weeks in a row will leave only Wed-Fri for transfer of books from larger libraries to my small village library. And given our forecast blizzard for Thurs/Fri this week ... they may be closed or at least not transferring books between libraries due to road conditions.

We already got a lot of snow this year, but it was manageable. This the first time they’re using the B word - blizzard. Someone said it could be the worst in a generation. The blizzard of ‘77 lasted a week, and you risked frost bite if you went outside in the brutal wind.
