The bookstore will give either cash or store credit for the books it takes in and they're pretty generous with the store credit. I got over $90 credit and didn't spend all of it on the books I took home. It's like getting books for free because I would have needed to get rid the books I've read anyway. I can't keep them all.

That sounds really good, books really loose cash value very quickly and it's hard to sell your used books for a good price.

I used to work in a bookshop and we had one colleague who did all the used book stuff because he could assess if the book had value (sometimes there'd be rarities and the owner wouldn't know it). Still sometimes young teenies came in and tried and I always gave them one Stephen King for two comic books, lol. You have to raise a next generation horror fans.

Saffron (saffronofthedead) | 37 comments Joining now as I've only just seen this challenge lol. Hopefully this helps me whittle down my TBR.

1. Battle Royale
2. Out
3. Goth
4. All's Well
5. Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis

These have been at the top of my TBR for sooo long and I just never get to them for some reason!

Awesome job! I have three more to go myself, which shouldn't be a problem since quite a few on my list are winter horrors.

Does anyone know if there is going to be a Halloween/autumn challenge this year?

;) Of course! Shouldn't be long now.
We wouldn't forget The Best Time of the Year. 🎃

Great! I've been working on my list! 👻

Marie | 4029 comments I finished this challenge awhile back. :)

Now I have three more challenges in HA to finish and getting close to being done with them too. Going to squeeze them in before the end of the year. :)

yeah! :)
I'm glad someone is having success with the challenges.
I'm a bit behind with this one and I'm honestly not sure why. Seems like I've been reading up a storm but I guess I'm choosing the wrong books. LOL

Thank you Wendy! :)

Also there is never a wrong book - you are at least reading something. :)

Except for the fact that I do enough challenges so I never bother with this one, but in the past 2 weeks I actually knocked 6 books off my "want to read" list. I'ma get that down under 200 before I know it!

Only 200.....I think perhaps I may be a book "hoarder".....

I'm really not kidding when I say I'd need to live to about 105 just to read the books I already have... and I'm not done buying books. :)

The Jeff Strand quote about knowing he'll die someday but he buys books like an immortal fits me to a tee!

That's a good one! My problem is buying more than I can physically keep up with in a lifetime.... but you never know when you'll want to read a particular title!

That is it exactly! Honestly, there is far more I want to read than I'll ever get to but to me that's simply reading security.
When I want to read a book, I want it at hand. GoodReads is the way I plan what I'll want to read for the next few months... and I'm always adjusting the plan.

That's only the list I keep as want to read on GR. It doesn't include a few hundred books I have bookmarked on Amazon and the library and a unread books sitting around my house. I just don't like feeling intimidated by having 700 books listed as want to read here.

I think I'm the opposite--I don't mark them on GR, but they're sitting around every room in the house. LOL!

Erika | 475 comments I enjoyed reading through this thread. I tried at one point to make some lists of books I own that are TBR but felt overwhelmed. It makes me feel scatterbrained and like I'm being "too caged" in my bookish processes LOL

I can't see myself remembering to always add the random books to the GR list every time I buy. I love treasure hunting used books stores/thrift stores etc. Wendy, I totally feel you and love that quote!

I think I own around 300+ books, a combo of read and TBR
(actually now that I look again, there has to be way more Lol because childhood faves and middle grade books I kept are in a separate location!)

Adrienne L I just checked and saw that I completed my Mount TBR Challenge for the year, with one to spare! My goal was 25.

How's everyone else doing?

This might be the first year I don't complete this challenge. I've been very distracted by several new and shiny books.
Next year, I may have to adjust my goals a little lower. But still, I'm having a great time discovering books and even pulling a few books out of the towering stacks to enjoy.

Yeah, those new and shiny books are why I set my goal at 25 instead of what it really should have been, considering the number of unread books I own. As long as we read just enough to keep that pile from toppling over on us, right?😏

Congratulations, Adrienne, thats really good, 25!

message 127: by inciminci (new)

inciminci | 650 comments Well, I'm about to fail this challenge. I had challenged myself to read only old physical books in my shelves, I wanted to read 12 books, one per month, but right now I'm still missing 4. I realized I have read a lot of new releases and digital books this year.

This is a bummer because I have so many physical books I want to get off my list (and eventually off my shelves, if I don't like them much I'll donate them to my favorite bookstore).

I am hoping I can have a little more self discipline next year 🥺

I finished!

If youre trying to enter the link in the first post on this thread, it won't work because this is the 2023 challenge which has expired.
You need to use the link at the start of this thread:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
OR
just go to the group's main page, scroll down a little and right past the list of "currently reading" books is the Challenges section. The very top one is the TBR challenge. Scroll to the bottom of its description and find where it says:
I want to read books for this challenge.
Enter a shelf name for this challenge:
and enter the number you want in the first box and a name for the shelf in the next box.
