Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments No surgery on my foot this week. But I'm working from home. They want the fractures, skin and tissue in my toe to heal more before they do the surgery. Apparently that'll allow them to do a more extensive repair which is better for me in the long run. But it's longer I'm in this cursed boot.

That must be very uncomfortable. I hope you have some assistance and relief. Those boots are a real annoyance.

Verónica | 417 comments Sarah D, your book House of Sky and Breath works for Blue 4, we talked about using it for WD4 but we need the Blue 4, do you want me to assign it to you?

message 504: by Verónica (last edited Apr 03, 2023 08:40PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments I will change my Green 9 to the WD4 left by Sarah, I found that The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo works for Green 9 and Reverse and we have that Draw 2 combo in one hand. That means Sarah D keeps the Blue 4, and I keep one of the Green 9 and the WD4 for the same card.

On the same note, there's a hand where we have a Draw 2 with a Reverse and WD4, I think we could use this with Mary's Green 0 book, that means that the WD4 for yellow 8 wont be necessary. We just need to decide if either Ashley or Mary keeps the Yellow 8.

We only need to find a Yellow 7. I found one on my library but it's an ebook and I'm not sure I can add another one to my list, it's on the short side though. If no one else finds one I'll commit to it.

message 505: by Verónica (last edited Apr 03, 2023 08:48PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Also Ashley's Blue 3 and Hannah's Blue 7 work for Reverse in others Draw 2 combo. I guess we wont have as much problem this time covering our Reverses. No need to look for any more than we have already logged.

yes that works for me

message 507: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Mary can do the Yellow 8. I'll read Late to the Party by Kelly Quindlen for Yellow 7 instead. Per my Google search, one of the characters has the last name Vargas.

message 508: by Verónica (last edited Apr 04, 2023 08:49PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Ok, that'll do then. We have covered all colored cards and reverses. We didn't get as many 5's and 7's this time, but still we need to tackle those.

message 509: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments *** UPDATE ***

We're going at a very good pace, 25% completed in the first week.

Ten more color cards to finish, but all WD4 are completed. With my Green 9 and Mary's Green 0 we'll also complete our Reverses. Five more 7's and three more 5's and we're done with those.

message 510: by Ashley (last edited Apr 09, 2023 06:04PM) (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments It seems like we are off to a great start! I kept thinking I had a slow start this month, but then I remembered that I finished 2 books on 4/1 and I picked up the pace a bit and finished another 2 this weekend. Right now I'm working on another colored card and my book club book (The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue). Then on to my last colored card (Green 3). I should be able to hopefully get in 2-3 additional books after that, but we'll obviously have to see how the month goes. Happy reading and Happy Easter to those who celebrate!

Verónica | 417 comments April Mini Challenge is out indeed
April Mini Challenge

Give it a look and throw us your questions.

Here's the countdown:

https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Remember that only the books finished after the mini starts count for the mini.

For what I see they've tried to spice things up a little this time. There are more tasks that can humanly be finished in two weeks, doesn't matter how fast the readers are in our team. So we'll have to make some decisions.

message 513: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments Yes there are a ton of tasks! Wow! I was thinking we should try to first complete the first part to get the bonus and then work on the second part if anyone is able to read that many books! That's a lot of books in 2 weeks!!

message 514: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Hi! Sorry I haven’t been on much. I have been reading. Because I needed more crap piled on me, hubby is having sone medical issues. Nothing super serious but I have had to drive him to some procedures. His doctor is 45 minutes away where he used to live. So I’ve had to kill time in that area. Up side is that I’ve had lots of audio and reading time. I’m holding off on finishing some for the mini. I should be able to take a look at it on Friday and do some updating.

message 515: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments y'all I've slowed down because I have screeched into an intense reading slump. BUT the good news is that I've started a bunch of books that I'll be able to hold off on for the mini. seems like being a mood reader helped this time

message 516: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I agree that we should first work on any section that gets us the most points.

message 517: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments The Woman in the library works for several of the part 1 tasks so I will definitely hold off on finishing until the mini starts.

I'm going to check on Irish Village and Flashfire, I'm almost done with both of those.

message 518: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Think this works for "lives in a community"?

Murder in an Irish Village is set in a remote Irish Village that has kind of no outsiders welcome vibe and they believe the Fae are mad because of 2 women living in a cursed cottage.

message 519: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments Apologies for the lack of communication and slow reading this month! Last week was super busy with family because of Easter and the nice weather has inspired us to do a lot more outdoor activities which have kept me busy, haha! I'm hoping to get more reading in this weekend so I can get through a few more books this month. I added my current reads to the mini challenge tab and will try to keep those in mind when starting new books. There are TONS of mini challenge tasks! Do they expect teams to finish both parts or is each team choosing which part they want to complete? Even just 1 part seems unachievable.

I would think that would count for lives in a community.

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments Hannah wrote: "Apologies for the lack of communication and slow reading this month! Last week was super busy with family because of Easter and the nice weather has inspired us to do a lot more outdoor activities ..."

This first part is only 48 books and we still need to read 72 more books for the month. So everyone should just try to sign up for the task in first section because we get bonus for completing either part.

I have some time off coming up next week so I can get some more reading down towards end of month.

The mini is open so everyone can keep reading books. We still have lots of time with 2 more weeks!

message 522: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue has thrown me all out of whack. I was planning to read it in hardcover, but was making no progress and need to have it done by Monday. I switched to audio and am doing better with that, but now I have 2 audiobooks going and no physical books which is not the norm for me and I'm not sure what I should be doing. I don't know if I should pick up another book to have a physical/e-book going and if so, what I should pick... or how I would progress in any of the 3 books if I picked up something else. That was my mindless rambling because obviously this is not a serious issue but just something that is boggling my mind at the moment.

I'll try to look at the mini stuff this weekend and put my current reads on there at the very least. I definitely won't finish anything I'm working on until the mini begins.

message 523: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Oops. I thought it didn’t start until tomorrow. I’ll start finishing some.

message 524: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I didn’t even pay attention at all to when it started but assumed it would be the 14th or 15th. I’m only halfway through each of my books so it doesn’t really matter for me I suppose.

Are you enjoying 'The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue'? It's been on my tbr pile for a while, and this might be the nudge I need to actually read it!

message 526: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments Veronica- I noticed you slotted one of my books into different 2 spots for different color cards. My book is used for both Green 1 and Green 9 so we are going to need to fix that. Looks like Sarah D slotted to read the Green 1 so maybe you got confused by both the Sarahs!!

You're right, good catch!

I must have mixed them up when I was trying to take advantage of the Draw2, I moved them around too much. Yours is Green 9, Sarah D is Green 1.

Ashley Elig | 689 comments LucyReads wrote: "Ashley wrote: "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue has thrown me all out of whack. I was planning to read it in hardcover, but was making no progress and need to have it done by Monday. I switched to..."

The first 40-50 pages went really slow for me, but it picked up and I'm enjoying it. It isn't a book I probably would've ever picked up on my own (I'm reading it for book club), but the premise is interesting and I'm curious to see how the story continues to unfold. The audio has definitely been the way to go for me personally, and I'm at about 71% now. As of now, I would recommend giving it a read if it's something you've been thinking of reading... I make no promises about anything that happens in the last 30% of the book though.

message 529: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I put my current reads and next read on the mini tab. My books work for other tasks, so if someone needs one of those spaces just let me know!

message 530: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I swear TinEye is playing tricks on me - at the beginning of the month I thought it said this book was orange and now it's saying red. HELP! The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

message 531: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments hi, I didn't have anything planned for green 1. I can try to find something

message 532: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Ok, I have something for green 1.

message 533: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Are there any particular mini tasks in part 1 that are looking like they might be pretty difficult? I'm just trying to figure out if there is something specific I should be looking for when planning for my last few reads of the month. I'm trying to pay particular attention to whether or not people are going to the bathroom in the books I'm working on now, because that's just an odd task... and obviously not something you would know before you start reading a book.

message 534: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments I tried to come up with a list for Part II if we are able to fill up Part I. I added it to our spreedsheets next to April Mini.

Not sure if we will be over achievers as its a lot of books to read. I tend to be a mood reader and just will find books that will match an unfilled need.

message 535: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments Ashley wrote: "Are there any particular mini tasks in part 1 that are looking like they might be pretty difficult? I'm just trying to figure out if there is something specific I should be looking for when plannin..."

Good question. I tend to be a mood reader so just look at list and try to find a book to fill in an open hole. Colors don't seem too hard. I think the one left can be hard such as set in May or Spring, action takes place at night, clingy character or sarcastic character. Those are the ones that seem hard to me at least as you might not know until you start reading the book.

message 536: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments I am reading a book that specifically mentions a character being sarcastic. I have this book slotted for the vampire prompt but that might be easier to fill than sarcastic. What do y'all think? Anyone have any vampire books they want to read?

message 537: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I can come up with a vampire book easily.

I need to scope out some new books to add. I should finish Magpie Murders today or tomorrow which works for a bunch of red cards.

How are we set for Reverses? I'm not dying to read Last House on Needless Street right away. It's on SCRIBD so no due date. I can put it off for shorter books.

message 538: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments Okay I will switch it on the mini to the sarcastic prompt.

It looks like we are good on reverses.

message 540: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I get a little unnecessarily stressed trying to decide which mini spot I should claim if my books work for more than one. I moved Late to the Party to yellow cover instead of swimming. I can always move it back if we need to, but I just did a quick Google books search for the book I'm about to start and I think it should work for swimming too so I can fill it in there if needed.

Right now I'm not seeing much in part 1 that The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time works for, but it definitely works for poodle in the text for part 2. I'm not very far into it yet though so there may be some options. Based on the numbers someone provided earlier, I think we'll need at least some for part 2 though so if it doesn't work for part 1 it should be okay.

I don't have to meet any other prompts for other challenges after these 2 books I'm reading/starting, so the additional book or 2 or 3 that I can fit in this month will be open for what we need for UNO/mini.

message 541: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Ashley I haven't slotted mine into any yet for the same reason. They all work for more than one.

message 542: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one.

I just started Nora Goes Off Script and it is set in April so that should count for the Spring task. I’ll add it to the mini tab tonight when I can get on my laptop.

message 543: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments no, I've felt stressed with it too

message 544: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments My book I am reading right now, Wild, actually works for a few different tasks now that I am getting into it. I slotted in takes place in North America because I didn't think it would fit anywhere else and I like to fill the holes! However, she is hiking Pacific Coast Trail in California which takes her into Sierra Nevada mountain range so if no one finds that we can move it there too.

message 545: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments The never uses the bathroom is proving harder to find than I thought. The brain doesn't register mundane things like that in a book normally.

message 546: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Mary C wrote: "The never uses the bathroom is proving harder to find than I thought. The brain doesn't register mundane things like that in a book normally."

It's just such a strange task. I definitely don't normally register bathroom usage in books. Also though, I don't think that each character in the books I'm reading goes to the bathroom... so if they mention a character or 2 going to the bathroom, but other significant characters don't, is that okay? Or does it have to be that no one goes to the bathroom?

message 547: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I think it means that it's never mentioned at all in the book. I have been trolling other teams and found a couple: Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood and 17th Suspect by James Patterson. Not sure if I read will either. I might keep looking.

I have been using google books or amazon book previews to search for the word "bathroom". It's been in all my books multiple times and my brain never registered it being mentioned. Unless there was a significant scene happening in the bathroom.

message 548: by Mary X (last edited Apr 18, 2023 07:16AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Time to start scoping out some cozies. They're usually good for a lot of cards and tasks and quick reads. Almost done with Magpie Murders. It definitely qualifies for a slow read.

message 549: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I also never noticed how often people eating breakfast is mentioned in books before.

message 550: by Verónica (last edited Apr 18, 2023 09:05PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments *** UPDATE ***

We need to find books for the following tasks:

Read a book where someone doesn't ever seem to use the bathroom.
Read a book featuring vampires.
Read a book where a characters lives in or takes a trip to the mountains.
Read a book where a great deal of the story/action takes place at night.
Read a book with a character who simply has no luck, or good fortune.
Read a book with an inoffensive character, i.e. someone who is considered to be pleasing.
Read a book with a gray cover.

So for the books still not finished, please assign it to one of this tasks if you have any in progress.

The remaining unclaimed tasks can be completed with four books that are finished but not logged in the mini (because task undecided) and using 7 of the pixie books.

16 tasks have been claimed but need to be finished.

Two books that qualify for the mini don't have any mini task assigned:
Lucy - How High We Go In The Dark
maria helena - Inget kvar att förlora

Any chance they fit in one of the remaining tasks? If not we might still use them for some points of Part II.

As per main, everything OK.
