LucyReads | 15 comments I had a quick think and couldn't immediately find a task to assign 'how high we go in the dark', but I'll have a bit more of deep dive- I'm sure there's something I can think of to connect it to a task!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I added a book for Australia and another book for vampires yesterday. I don't see the Australia one in your list but it's also not claimed on the sheets. I'll slot my books into those 2 spots.

If either of them turns out to work for no bathroom I'll let you know. I can always read another for vampire or Australia.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Oops. I didn't read the whole post. Feel free to move Live and Let Diet to another spot. I'm not finished and no bathroom yet. Maybe we'll get lucky.

eta: darn it. Used Google books preview and she ends up using a bathroom at some point.

It does work for mountains. I forgot she drove through the mountains at the beginning. I'll claim that since there's another Australia book I don't know about. (pixie book?)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I'm going to slot Woman in the Library into the bad luck task. One of the characters fits that.

I'll see if Flashfire works for anything in part 2 because I don't think it works for any of the open tasks.

message 555: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Yes, if it’s not on the list I posted it means I found a Pixie for it.

message 556: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I moved live and let diet to the mountain task. I also think I have one for set mostly at night: Crossing Over Easy.

message 557: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments I'm going to start Persuasion by Jane Austen this week. I found a description of the characters and Anne is described as, "She is calm and caring, which puts others at ease". I think this would work for the mini task about finding an inoffensive character/considered to be pleasing.

This month has flown by and reading has really been put on the back burner for me. I will definitely finish the books I've already claimed/added to the log. Just not sure if I will get to more than that at this point.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Wow. Lots of "set in Australia" tasks for part 2. I don't like my current Australia book enough to read more of that series.

Looking at that list to see if a couple books that won't be needed for part 1 can be put in for part 2. Flashfire only works for "good sense of smell".

Murder in an Irish Village has sheep on the cover but not sure if it would count for "sheep face". The sheep are way in the background.

Murder in an Irish Cottage (Irish Village Mystery, #5) by Carlene O'Connor

According to the log, Flashfire works for swimming, is that not correct?

message 560: by Verónica (last edited Apr 19, 2023 12:24PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments There're four finished books that have more than one option, so I arrange them as follows:

The Fiancée Farce - someone ends up (practically) naked
Murder in an Irish Cottage - a character who likes to bake.
The Woman in the Library - a character is considered to be attached to someone, or with a clingy character.
Flashfire - where someone goes for a swim.

Please confirm this is correct.

With these four assigned, and using seven pixies it's how I got the list I posted with the remining tasks. I'll write it down in the log so there's no confusion, I haven't done it because I was working on them trying to find the best scenario. But I think this will be it.

*** EDIT ***

Ok , I just saw The Fiancée Farce assigned o the LGBTQ task, so I'll use the Magpie Murders for the naked one.

Also Mary put The Woman in the Library in no luck character, so the clingy one still open.

message 561: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments sorry I didn't comment when I changed Fiancée Farce

message 562: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments I saw a few changes from the moment I posted to now. So I'll review everything and update the list. Hold your horses.

Verónica | 417 comments *** UPDATE ***

So, I changed my ice cream book to the grey cover and found something on Pixie for the ice cream one. With all books in place and the 8 pixie used, the only remaining task is the bathroom one. All tasks claimed but not finished yet stay put.

We need to fit any books not yet on the mini to the Part II tasks. All new books added to the log will go to Part II.

message 564: by Verónica (last edited Apr 19, 2023 12:51PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Books still pending for Part I:

set in May - or spring in general. (Ashley)

where someone lives in a community. (Hannah E)
with a blue cover. (Hannah E)
where someone eats or makes breakfast. (Hannah E)
with an inoffensive character, i.e. someone who is considered to be pleasing. (Hannah E)

where a characters lives in or takes a trip to the mountains. (Mary)
where a great deal of the story/action takes place at night. (Mary)
featuring vampires. (Mary)

with a character who lives at or takes a trip to the beach. (Sarah D)

set in North America. (Sarah S.)

with a green cover. (Veronica)
with a red cover. (Veronica)
with a purple cover. (Veronica)
with a two-word title. (Veronica)
with a white cover. (Veronica)
featuring a pest, or a disease/illness. (Veronica)
with 3 things that are the same on the cover. (This can be 3 items/plants/people/etc.) (Veronica)
featuring a tyrant. (Veronica)
with a rock on the cover. (Veronica)

I'm about to finish three, and some of the books of my list are short so I can definitely finish them, but I don't think I can add any more for Part II.

I usually search for Australian authors to find books set in Australia. I know most (if not all) of Jane Harper's books are set in Australia and Liane Moriarty is a popular Australian too.

I'm about halfway through Nora Goes Off Script and going very slowly on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It's a short book so I will definitely finish both of those.

I'm still trying to find a book to fit the bathroom task but it feels impossible. I'll keep looking though.

It doesn't matter what order we do the Part 2 tasks in, correct? It's just 10 points per task and 30 Bonus if we complete it all (which is not realistic)?

message 567: by Verónica (last edited Apr 19, 2023 01:11PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments I'm looking for a shorter Green 1, and since most my choices are non-fiction I think they'll work for the bathroom one.

And yes, the order doesn't matter .

message 568: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Found one. So we've covered the bathroom one.

Let's try make a dent on that Part II.

yayyyy! That one was hard.

message 570: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I'm not sure why it never occurred to me to look at non-fiction for the bathroom thing. Glad you found one. I'll start looking for some short reads for the Part 2 tasks so I can hopefully get a few in.

message 571: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I just tried to put something in Part 2. It looks like the tasks are set up like a drop down... but it just says "loading" when I try to look at the dropdown options. Are there supposed to be dropdowns there?

message 572: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Ugh. Sorry to bombard with messages. I misread the rules and got confused about the partial name vs the full name being in the text. I was all excited because I had poodle in the text.

Anyway, I know Sarah put a tab in with some stuff for part 2, but is there a place where facts are provided to us on these animals, or do we just Google on this one for the colors and creative connections?

message 573: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments For colors in Part II we have to use the images used for the UNO teams, and for connections we can complement the description in UNO with info we find elsewhere.

Yeah I just wikipedia stuff about the animals and tried to add stuff as well as I checked out some posts in other groups if they had anything. Double check colors as I may have added colors from the wikipedia pages of animals too.

message 575: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Random fact and probably not super helpful, but the University of Cincinnati mascot is the bearcat. Maybe if the author graduated from there or if there is some kind of book about a mascot that could work? It might be a bit of a stretch but just something I knew off the top of my head and I wanted to put it out there.

message 576: by Mary X (last edited Apr 20, 2023 06:06AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Yes Flashfire could be used for swimming.

A character jumps in water and swims away to escape someone else.

Multiple bread bakers in Murder in a Irish cottage.

I thought those takes were already covered because they weren't in the list posted.

message 577: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I finished the mostly set at night book and am now on the vampire book.

message 578: by Mary X (last edited Apr 20, 2023 06:09AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I read a lot of non-fiction and I didn't think of that either for the no bathroom break task.

I finished the mountain task book yesterday and forgot to put the date in on the mini. I fixed that.

message 579: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I decided that the vampire book is likely to be too sexy to listen to at work. So I'm saving that one for the weekend.

Added another library book I have that works for a task in part 2. Also possibly a back up to something in part 1 but I'm not sure yet.

message 580: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Is there a rule about how much of a book has to be set in spring for it to count for that task? The first 63% of the book was set in April/May but now it is sort of skipping through with a couple of chapters of summer, fall, and winter. I'm at 80% now and it is January.

message 581: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I would say that counts as Spring

message 582: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Mary C wrote: "I would say that counts as Spring"

I was hoping that at least 50% was good enough.

message 583: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Just giving a general update. I have 3 books unfinished on the spreadsheet/mini. I will definitely finish these but I'm not sure I will be able to read anything else.

How are we doing on total number of books for the April main UNO challenge?

message 584: by maria helena (new)

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments I just finished a book and should be able to finish one more, maybe two.

message 585: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments I would also say that would count as spring

message 586: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments *** UPDATE ***

We are at 68% of the main, with only 8 days to finish. Five color books pending:

Sarah D 4 Blue
Hannah 8 Blue
Ashley 3 Green
Veronica 1 Green
Veronica 5 Yellow

The mini looks OK, I think we can finish the Part I, for Part II we don't have many.

The ones pending are:

Octopus in the Title (Ashley)
Set in Australia (Ashley)
Read a book with a blue cover. (Hannah E)
Read a book where someone eats or makes breakfast. (Hannah E)
Read a book with an inoffensive character, i.e. someone who is considered to be pleasing. (Hannah E)
Read a book featuring vampires. (Mary)
Read a book with a purple cover. (Veronica)
Read a book with a two-word title. (Veronica)
Read a book with a white cover. (Veronica)
Read a book featuring a pest, or a disease/illness. (Veronica)
Read a book with 3 things that are the same on the cover (Veronica)
Read a book where someone doesn't ever seem to use the bathroom.(Veronica)

Most of mine are audios, so I can finish no problem. How is everybody doing?

We have used all of our pixies, so the remaining 36 books are all on us. We have 22 on the log.

Nora Goes Off Script was my 3 Green. I finished it on 4/20.

My 2 remaining books are going fine and will be finished by the end of the month. I'm scoping out some other short books just in case I have time to fit something else in, but I doubt I will.

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments Just an FYI, I'm really struggling to be motivated to read the book I had selected for blue 8. I have 3 other options that I'm interested in that work for Blue 8, and they are audiobooks, so I can listen at work this week. I'm going to listen to the first few minutes of each of them tomorrow and see which one I'm most interested in and just switch to that one. I'm very confident I will complete the task, I just don't think this specific book is the one to do it because I'm just not as interested in it as I thought I would be. I'll update the spreadsheet tomorrow to reflect this. When I get into a reading slump like this, it's usually because the book I'm reading isn't interesting me and I just need to let it go, so I'm going to make that call before it's too late for me to complete another one. I'll be able to finish Persuasion too.

I just started an audio that will work for Blue 8 if none of your books breaks your reading slump. I get it when you just can't get into a book. Hope one works though!

message 591: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments I just finished a book and added another book that I will finish this week. I will probably be able to squeeze in one more before the end of the month maybe 2 if they are short. Looks like we need to squeeze in a few more books to fill up the cards in all the hands if we need 14 more that aren't on the log. We can do it!

message 592: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments I'm also feeling a big slump barrelling towards me. I did finish a book that I'll add to the tracker in the morning but I'm a little worried about my blue book

message 593: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments I've chosen "Beautiful World, Where Are You" to cover the blue 8. I'm already 21% through it. It also works for blue 4, so if we need to shift things, Sarah S. could cover my blue 8 and I could cover Sarah's blue 4. I removed "Advika and the Hollywood Wives" from the spreadsheet.

Audiobooks seem to be my jam this month, so I may even be able to finish another and/or a short paper book. Is there anything else that we're lacking? I'm not 100% sure that I'll be able to do more than I'm already committed to, but if I find that this beats my reading slump and I have extra time, just want to know what I should keep an eye out for.

Beautiful World, Where Are You Chapter Sampler by Sally Rooney

message 594: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments honestly Hannah if you feel like you can take on Blue 4 than I could listen to something shorter that I can try to knock out

message 595: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments We have a pixie that works for blue 4, we can use that.

message 596: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Lets try to find some really short books (min 100 Pages) to finish the main. Don’t worry about which cards works for, only easy ones remain, I can rearrange them if needed.

message 597: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments I've finished Persuasion! I'll finish Beautiful World, Where Are You in the next day or 2. I should be able to finish at least 1 more book beyond that. Do we have a countdown for the end of the month? I don't have much going on this weekend and the weather is supposed to be bad, so hopefully I can get a good amount of reading done.

message 598: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments *** UPDATE ***

We are at 74%, 6 days to the end of the challenge. 30 books left, but only 19 on the log. So we need 11 more books to complete the main.

Only 8 Blue and 1 Green remain of the color cards.

8 more task to finish Part I of the mini (most are mine). 3 more books to finish for points on Part II.

message 599: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments I finished the 8 blue today and am working on hopefully 2 more short books. I have been looking for short books like Veronica suggested to try to get our hands filled!

message 600: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments I found a few shorter Tessa Bailey books so I'll try to whip them out
