Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments Has anyone read Survive The Night by Riley Sager? It just came available in my library app and I'd love to pick it up, but it doesn't look like it works for some of the things we need. If it works as a reverse, that would be great.

I read it! I am a huge fan of Sager. I think I have read all his books.

Mary- Sorry to hear about the recent loss of your sister. Hope you get your reading mojo back though!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I'm feeling it today because I was tasked with going through the family photos to make memorial picture boards for her celebration of life.

She had substance abuse issues her whole adult life. She's finally getting some rest from those demons. But I do miss her.

I'm so sorry Mary. Don't worry about UNO, if books give you comfort so be it. Grief tends to come in waves, go at your own pace. I wish reading could provide you with some distraction.

Verónica | 417 comments Mini challenge is on! Seems fun. Check the Feb Mini tab in our log spreadsheet.

◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1).

◈ Books need to be finished after the start of this mini challenge on Feb 14, 9am UTC https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown... and before March 1 at 9am UTC (when the March UNO month begins).

◈ Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books from what you are claiming for your UNO hands.

You can find all info in the group discussion
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Verónica | 417 comments For the new players, this mini challenge is a chance to get extra points, but lets be real, we all members of this UNO group are freaks and try to finish it all, hehe.

For the mini I do prefer the tasks to be claimed, since they tend to be too specific and finding things is harder than with regular cards.

For the planners, write in the Member reading column next to the task your name if you have found a book for it. I try not to put too much on my plate, but I'll write my name in everything I find and I will decide depending on which ones have less or none candidates.

For the mood readers, as soon as the book for a task comes your way also write it, even if someone else's name is on it, write it right next to it. Same case if a book works for more than one task. But always try to look for the ones vacant.

message 110: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I keep changing my mind about what I'm going to read. Now that the mini is out, I've gone back to an earlier plan. I will adjust the spreadsheet accordingly and am still reading the book I planned for Blue 4. I know in a previous year, one of my teammates read Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren for a yellow cover... but I always thought it looked more orange and TinEye seems to agree. Thoughts? I saw book with an orange cover on the mini list. Let me know if this works!

I'm kind of confused. Should we fill in all the blanks on the mini when we are actually in the process of reading the book? Or when we've finished the book?

message 112: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments And in the mini, where do we put what else a book works for?

message 113: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments If a book works for a lot of tasks and you aren't sure where to put it, you can always list hem here.

message 114: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I see one with alien on the mini and I just finished one. I would have waited. Oh well.

message 115: by Verónica (last edited Feb 11, 2023 12:03PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments I added a column on the Feb log tab for the mini, so you can write the task it works for (green letters, bird, water, etc).

Also, on the mini tab everyone that finds something for a task can write their name in the 'Member reading' column, that way we can see which tasks we don't have a book for, but don't fill in the name of the book yet, until you start reading it. The task will be claimed once the book name is filled in. If more than one person has a book for a task only the one starting the book can claim it.

If we need to move things around the column in the log tab will help finding out if one book fits in more than one task.

message 116: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Don't forget that we still can communicate through this comments. Whether it's asking to a teammate to switch tasks with you or to let us know you really want to read one specific book that only works for one task, but you'll start later, and so on.

message 117: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments hi all!! just checking in! I have a slow day today so I'm going to add more books to the tracker and will be exploring the mini chall!!

message 118: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I took a look at the tasks yesterday and I'll claim some tomorrow.

I'm saving the last hour or so of a couple of books to finish after the mini starts. I'm sure I can find a task for them.

message 119: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments I put the book I'm currently reading on the "EAST in text" task, but it works for other words on text. If someone finds a book with EAST on title we can move it, just to maximize points. My book only works for words on text or the FOUR in title. And I will finish it by the 14th.

message 120: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments I picked some tasks that worked with the current books I am reading. I will look for some more for my next picks. Some of the task are quite interesting and seem hard.

I was planning on using one of my current reads for FOUR in the title, but I can also look to see where else it may fit. I originally thought that might be a harder task to fill. It would definitely also work for white letters on the cover... so just let me know which one would be better and I can fill it in.

Does anybody have thoughts on a few of these that maybe look the hardest? With different people liking different books, sometimes it is hard to discern... but I'm happy to look for some of the harder tasks. I will probably only read 2 or 3 more books after these current reads.

It definitely would be better use of my book in the FOUR task, if you're OK with it I'll move it. Do yours fits in any other task?

I think words in text are probably the easiest to find, so maybe we should try first to find the words in titles.

I think the animals/shapeshifters ones are the hardest for me.

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Verónica wrote: "Ashley wrote: "Verónica wrote: "I put the book I'm currently reading on the "EAST in text" task, but it works for other words on text. If someone finds a book with EAST on title we can move it, jus..."

Totally fine. I moved mine to white letters on the cover and removed my name from the FOUR in title. Mine probably fits some of the words in text, but I agree that those are usually easy to find.

I'm going to look and see if I can find an animal/shapeshifter that works with my other challenges.

message 124: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Also, it seems like maybe reverses are still a priority - throw some of your favorite thriller titles my way. If they fit something tricky on the mini, even better!

message 125: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Ashley wrote: "Also, it seems like maybe reverses are still a priority - throw some of your favorite thriller titles my way. If they fit something tricky on the mini, even better!"

I read "Stillhouse Lake", you have it in your to-read list, it works for body of water & orange letters.

message 126: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments the Villa works for shelved "summer" so I claimed that task. But I can search it for more of the words if needed. It has dawn and southern.

message 127: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Of course the yellow themed tasks doesn't have "yellow text on cover" because I have one of those almost finished.

message 128: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I claimed "grey cover" for this one but I listed the words it works for if you need to move it.

You're Invited by Amanda Jayatissa

message 129: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments I added the 2 books I'm currently reading to the tasks that they fit for. "Not a Happy Family" works for 2 of them so I put it under both and we can decide which one to use it for once I finish. This week is really busy for me so I'm sure I will not finish them before the mini challenge officially starts.

message 130: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I'm going to scope out some short books to help fill in more tasks. And to help catch up for my yearly reading goal that I've already reduced twice this year and it's only February.

message 131: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Verónica wrote: "Ashley wrote: "Also, it seems like maybe reverses are still a priority - throw some of your favorite thriller titles my way. If they fit something tricky on the mini, even better!"

I read "Stillho..."

I do want to read this one, but for my other challenge I need something from the library and mine doesn't have this one available. It looks like MH read UNSUB, which is also on my list and has red letters on the cover if nothing else. UNSUB (UNSUB, #1) by Meg Gardiner Also, do we think that's a body of water in the letters of the title?

I'm on the fence about reading that one right now, so I'm going to keep exploring options. I still have quite a bit left in my current read. I'm also going to look up some shorter titles to see if I can squeeze any extras in.

message 132: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Finished the 2 books I had mostly read over the weekend. Starting a short book that works for aliens, dragon and "battles otherworldly creatures". So I won't slot that into a task until I know which it's needed for more. Maybe I'll read a couple in the series to cover all 3 of those.

Only speaking for myself, but those are definitely prompts outside of my comfort zone... so I won't be upset AT ALL if you handle those prompts.

message 134: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments The modified some of the tasks, probably because of people asking questions:

UPDATES:
Task 20: task extended, character flying by all means (wings, broomstick, bird, etc) will be accepted
Task 29 "huntress" in title or series title will also be accepted besides "hunter" and "prey"
Task 40 : animal constellation, name variants for the same animal are accepted
Task 45: "goddess" shelf will also be accepted besides "gods" shelf, the min 3 tags is the same

message 135: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments I added a few backlogged books to the tracker and checked where they fit for the mini.

I put my name down for the alien, demon and autumn prompt but have to double check the wordcount on my choice for the autumn prompt.

message 136: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments If you have alien covered, I'll go ahead and claim dragon for the book I finished.

message 137: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Well, my library books have changed my plans a little bit. Everything on the spreadsheet already will still be read, but I'm not sure if I'll get to read a reverse. I'm hoping if I can get through these books fast enough I can still fit one in.

message 138: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Thanks Sarah D and Maria Helena for logging the books, it was a relief, we seemed to be a little behind.

The good news is that we've crushed the 5's and 7's. The only ones giving trouble are the reverse, I'll try to add at least one to my list.

Hannah, your book "Not a Happy Family" will take the "4 in page count" task. The other one was for one of Sarah's books.

I'm almost done with Yellow 5, but we're still in need for the Blue 4 and another repeated color card.

I should finish Full Disclosure for Blue 4 tonight or tomorrow. I have less than an hour of audio left but I'm not sure if I'll get to listen to it tonight. It's already on the spreadsheet, just not marked complete yet obviously.

message 140: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Just finished it and updated both tabs on the spreadsheet.

message 141: by Verónica (last edited Feb 15, 2023 07:14PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments And we're done with the color cards, yay!

We only need a WD4 more, but since one of our teammates is no longer playing, we were granted 8 Pixie books, and I will look for a WD4 there if no one else has a book for it. Also I'll leave those Pixie books for the mini tasks that we might find difficult to fill.

But just keep going y'all, we're gonna make it 💪🤓

message 142: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I was scrolling through some recent reads of teammates (for reverses in case I have time for one) and saw that Sarah S. read Finding Me. I didn't realize this when I read it. Adding this info to the spreadsheet in case we want/need to move it.

message 143: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I also just discovered the "compare books" feature in the friends section, which might prove to be extremely helpful. You can even compare a friend's "read" shelf to your "to read" shelf. Just thought I'd share.

message 144: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I have a four day weekend while hubby is working most of it. So I plan to knock some books out this weekend. Almost finished with Night Swim.

I'll take another look at the mini and see what's needed. Maybe I can find some short cozies or romances to cover some.

message 145: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I see people putting "east" in title for some books where all the letters are in it, but I think for that one the word actually has to be "east". It's worded differently for the one that says "the letters of f.o.u.r" in the title.

Sorry about that!! I anticipated having time last weekend and it was just super busy and this week has been chaotic.

I have Lakewood and A Lesson Before Dying on my list for this month, has anyone read one of those? I hope to read both but will prioritize one of them if I can use it for a reverse

I have read A Lesson Before Dying. I think it was in high school? It was a long time ago but I definitely read it and still own a copy.

Horse by Geraldine Brooks I slotted for animal and The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel I had slotted for body of water but someone else put there book. Not sure where else it might fit if anyone sees somewhere else to put it.

Maybe trees on the cover and then Mary C could move Deep South to South in the title? Just an idea. I'm sure our captains can come up with something. I'm trying to review to see if my white words on the cover could move to somewhere else, but so far am coming up with nothing great there.
