Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments I only add books to the log once I've started them, but I can make one of them work for another animal.

message 352: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments I went through each animal and added some more characteristics that my current books can work for to the main March log in the mini column. If any of my other books need to be moved to different tasks, just let me know and we can definitely make different things work. I just threw them in the first spot I could think of for each book. I'm hopeful I'll find more characteristics as I get further into each book. It's tough to not take this challenge too literally and think outside of the box a bit, haha!

message 353: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments Is it okay for Sarah and I to both reference the pack aspect of Arctic Hares though? To Sir Philip, With Love was added there because of her large family that stick together and protect each other. Is it okay for us to have similar characteristics? If not, I'm struggling to find another spot for that book. It has a blue cover, so I could move it to Chameleon and move The Five to maybe Flower Spiders? Each character was attacked and killed, they could be considered prey? Not sure if that's stretching it too far? My other thought is to move either The Five or To Sir Philip, With Love to the location for Chrysso Spiders (Europe) and potentially move A Man Called Ove to Alaskan Hare as the solitary trait? Since Ove is a loner and stays away from people at the beginning of the book. I'm good with whatever, just want to make sure we don't lose points for having the same trait listed twice.

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments that's a really good question Hannah! If we don't use my book that's totally fine, I obviously just got a handle on this challenge and I've been trying to match characteristics for any reads going forward.

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments (I also hadn't looked at the list yet when I was asking the question to have seen that you had filled the spot!)

No problem! This is definitely a weird challenge and we're all trying to figure it out, haha! I definitely think we should try to use every book we can for the challenge. I think yours makes more sense for "a pack" then mine does. Just trying to find where else mine fits so that we can fill more holes :)

We could also add mine as a second location trait for the Chrysso Spiders I think.

Yes, only books finished on or after the 15th can count for the mini challenge. They could be started before then, but can't be finished until after.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments A close friend of mine died last Saturday at our St Patricks day Party. Heart attack in front of most of her closest fiends and her twin brother.

I've been reading but I just haven't had it in me to think much about the mini challenge. Bu I'll try to match my books to some tasks as I finish them. I checked out a book set in Australia and one that I think might work for one of the spiders.

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments I've finished two more books and I should be able to finish one more this month. But I'm struggling a bit to find a way to use them for the mini challenge.

message 364: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I just finished a book so I wanted to give you all an update on what I think the rest of the month will look like.

I started The Perks of Being a Wallflower on audio yesterday. This will work for a reverse and I tentatively have it on the mini for anole - bright green cover. The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky I will keep notes of what else it will work for as I listen.

Tomorrow I will start Black Cake. This will also work for a reverse. Not sure on the mini yet.

After I finish those two books, I will be done with my other challenge for the month, so IF I have time for additional books I can try to find whatever we need for UNO.

Depending on how quickly I read Black Cake, I do have a yellow 5 I could read if we still need one by then. I'm just not sure if I'll definitely get to it. I will keep you posted. At most, I could potentially squeeze in 1 more short audiobook as well.

Sometimes I get carried away and provide too much information/detail.

The short version is that I will definitely finish:
1) The Perks of Being a Wallflower
2) Black Cake

I might get to but I wouldn't count on these yet:
1) I Thought You Said This Would Work (Yellow 5)
2) Another short audiobook to hopefully fill another hole in our UNO.

message 365: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments So apparently the audio book I checked out set in Australia is in French. I would understand quite a but not enough. Going to swap it out for something else. Probably a murder mystery set in New Zealand that I just found on Scribd.

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments Anyone find a Yellow 5 card book to read? Seems like that's the big one we have left. I haven't been able to find anything.

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments are we getting any help from uno pixie this mini?

message 368: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Sarah wrote: "Anyone find a Yellow 5 card book to read? Seems like that's the big one we have left. I haven't been able to find anything."

I have a Yellow 5, I'm just not sure if I can get to it. I'll probably have a better idea if I'll get there after a few days reading Black Cake. It seems like the chapters are short, which always seems to help me get through a book quicker. I'm hopeful, but I'm not ready to commit that I will definitely get there. I'll report back in a couple of days.

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Sarah wrote: "are we getting any help from uno pixie this mini?"

I THINK we should have 8 books each month to replace Kristen's books.

Verónica | 417 comments *** UPDATE ***

We have covered all our color cards. Seems I just need to speed up a bit.

I am onto two of the four reverses we need, I see a few on the list, so hopefully we'll end those too pretty soon.

5's and 7's two more of each, and we're done. I have one that works for either one of them almost done.

We are at 50%, with two more weeks to go. I'll finish at least two maybe tomorrow.

The mini is getting there but we're struggling. We need books for:

🐇Alaskan Hare
Cover Colours: Brown, White, Black, Grey-Brown

🐰Arctic Hare
Location: Canada

🐸Peron's Tree Frog
Location: Australia
Char 1
Char 2
Char 3

🏵️Flower Spiders
Location: Australia, New Zealand
Char 2
Char 3

🐢Golden Tortoise Beetle
Cover Colours: Gold, Reddish-Brown
Location: the Americas (North, South or Central America)
Char 1
Char 2
Char 3

🕷️Chrysso Spiders
Location: Europe, North America, Asia, Brazil, Peru
Char 1
Char 2
Char 3

I'll try to use our pixie books for characteristics, but it might be a little harder for those, because I haven't read most books in there. Maybe you could check that out to see if you have read something and fit it in a task. Here's the link: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list.... Maybe I'll also look around the other group chats for pixie books used on the mini.

message 375: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments If we have a different book for arctic hare colored cover, I feel confident moving Confessions on the 7:45 to Peron's tree frog characteristic. Pearl doesn't like people near her/touching her. I even have a page number/quote for that.

I think that chrysso spider has the hardest characteristics to match. There just doesn't seem like much to work with there.

message 376: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments I am currently reading Sam by Allegra Goodman which Tin eye says it is majority Brown so can slot into Flower spider for second color. OR wondering if would work for characteristic as main character is a climber/bouldering and talks about how she climbs and moves in all directions.

I was looking for a gold or reddish-brown cover for Golden Tortoise Beetle. This are two potential options if anyone thinks gold for Lucky by Marissa Stapley . Its a short book and would also work for a reverse so would like to read this but not sure Gold enough and Tineye doesn't seem to have gold as color.

My either idea is Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia as reddish brown maybe? OR there is a character that is missing and I am assuming presumed dead would that work for the characteristic of pretends to be dead?

Need peoples thought if these colors or characteristic work. I would be able to commit to probably one of the two but maybe both. Thanks

Agree with the characteristics for Chrysso spider. I guess maybe trying to look for a character that is wearing "vivid or bright colors" or some kind of striking outfit.

We could use Circe for one of the spiders because she traps men & spiders trap prey?

Catch & kill could be used for another spider because they like....catch and kill their prey? lmao

Carrie Soto for gold if we don't have gold, for golden tortoise beetle? she wins gold a bunch??

I have read a few of the books on the list but nothing is coming to mind (Kiss Quotient, Holidaze, Muffintop, both Bellinger Sisters, hating game, never fall for your fiance, etc)

I added them to the tracker but if they don't work feel free to remove

message 382: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments The Fellowship of the Ring from the Pixie bookshelf could work for the Alaskan Hare. The Hobbits have larger, hairy feet. I read it last year, so it could also work as a reverse?

I can move The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to a lot of different places. I'm reading it to my daughter right now, but there are a lot of animals in it.

There's a lot of interaction with trees. They travel through a forest for a lot of the book and climb one at one point (Tree Frogs).

I can move it tomorrow when I'm at my desktop :)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I finished my book that's set in New Zealand. There story is centered around the geothermal mud pots in Rotorua NZ if that helps with any of the animals. Not that I can think of in anyway but thought I'd toss that out there. That's Molten Mud Murder

I also finished my book with spider in the title: Spider's Web They called the MC "adorable spider" as a teasing nickname. So not sure if that works or not. There's a spider on the cover.

The New Zealand book can go for Flower Spiders as the location :) That would finish that out. And the spider one I would think works for Chrysso Spider as the third chracteristic. It looks like both of the spiders would be done if you add those 2 books on there :D

I would move Carrie Soto to Gold color cover. I read the book but don't recall her winning a gold medal. In tennis she won matches and championships.

For Canada location we could slot in The Handmaid’s Tale (The Handmaid's Tale, #1) by Margaret Atwood as Atwood is from Canada.

I think a lot of people have added to the mini so we are close on getting most of the cards.

message 386: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Erzberger (hanestherr) | 78 comments I think I will be able to get to another audiobook this month once I finish Stillhouse Lake. I'm looking at "My Dark Vanessa" since it will work for a 7 and has a grey cover. We could use the grey cover for Arctic Hare or Peron's Tree Frog. Both would be as a characteristic that repeats the cover color.
My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

Otherwise, I could listen to "The Butcher" which would work for Alaskan Hare, Arctic Hare, Anoles, Tree Frog, and maybe Tortoise Beetles because it has a brown cover.
The Butcher by Jennifer Hillier

My preference would be to read The Butcher, but I know we need 7s and I definitely want to make sure we are covering all of our cards. Once I finish Stillhouse Lake, I'll check back in to see what's needed for both the main challenge and mini and go from there.

message 387: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I just moved Confessions on the 7:45 to Peron's Tree Frog characteristic instead of Arctic Hare cover. It seems like with the pixie books it will be easier to use those as colored covers if we can. We can always move it back if needed.

I also just put Black Cake on there as I read that one of the characters was a vegetarian and the golden tortoise beetle eats foliage... so hopefully that works. I know the other group used that as an example.

I'll keep noting anything else that I pick up on in the mini column on our main tracking sheet so we can move them around if needed.

message 388: by Verónica (last edited Mar 20, 2023 12:58PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Great job with the pixie books! I'll take at least three suggestions right away, I'll wait a little bit more for the rest. And since a few of the pixie books work for reverse I'll try to use the ones that work for both the mini and reverse.

All ideas are good, but in some cases we can't use the books mentioned for the mini, since they need to have a march 15-31 finished date.

message 389: by Verónica (last edited Mar 20, 2023 02:19PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments *** UPDATE ***

So I used 4 Pixie books, I knocked down two reverses, I have two on my list but if someone is working on one please go ahead and take one slot, or check again the UNO Pixie books for march. And that will be it for those pesky cards.

I read again the mini post and we can duplicate color cover and location as one characteristic, but just one of them. So please check if you have any candidates for that.

We're done with the 5's, we need one more 7 (besides the one I'm reading) and we're done with those too.

Here's the list for the mini still pending:

🐇Alaskan Hare
Cover Colours: Brown, White, Black, Grey-Brown

🐰Arctic Hare
Cover Colours: Brown, Grey, White
Location: Canada
Char 3

🐸Peron's Tree Frog
Location: Australia

🐢Golden Tortoise Beetle
Cover Colours: Gold, Reddish-Brown
Location: the Americas (North, South or Central America)

🕷️Chrysso Spiders
Char 2

I might be able to use our 4 reminding pixies for these, but we have 8 vacant.

Not bad! we can do this.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I'm sorry I haven't been much help with finding books. I felt like I was finely getting past the biggest wave of grief for my sister and then my friend dies. I was with both of them as they passed. Now I seem to be grieving everyone I have ever lost.

I've been able to read and listen to audio books. I usually enjoy hunting down books for weird tasks but I just can't seem to drum up any enthusiasm.

My husband was at his Monday night card league last night. I spent the evening listening to an audio book and shopping for funeral shoes. Had surgery on my foot recently and am still only able to wear sneakers and even then only Sketchers Go. Tried to find some shoes that I can wear with a dress that don't look too much like sneakers.

Ugh. Sorry for the grief dump on you.

I'll look and see what cards we still need. Might swap a couple of books out to better fit where we're short.

Please do not apologize to us. You have been through a lot recently and you can only do what you are able to do. If reading and hunting down books helps you in your grief, then go for it... but it is totally understandable if you just don't have it in you to do it like you normally would. I cannot imagine what you must be feeling/going through.

I finished zodiac 7/heartless sky and changed the characteristic because they were attacked by a spider in a web.

I have put zodiac 8/starlight and sorrow in for the final characteristic of Chrysso spider because I believe I can finish it in time because I have been wrapped up in the book and am whipping through it.

I have committed to Delilah Green, The Kracken's Mate and Zodiac 8 and feel like I can absolutely say I will finish all 3. But I don't see me finishing much more than that this month so that is going to be where I put my energy. If I finish I can try to find a novella if we need it for any other mini tasks
