I read the Road many moons ago. Great book. I've only read one Octavia Butler so far and enjoyed it very much. I've got a couple of others on my bookshelf. Good luck with all of your selections.

Lea (leaspot) | 3652 comments I've read both Hidden Valley Road and The Road and they were both intense, but very well written. I have Columbine on my individual challenge list also, I'm hoping to get through it this coming year. Happy reading!

Saar The Book owl | 75 comments You have an interesting list, John, I might drop by from time to time to read your thoughts about the books.
I've read The Road and Just Kids. Great books that will stick by my side. Patty Smith wrote some interesting sentences in Just Kids that makes you wonder about them and some you'll never forget.

Veronica (veraj121) | 232 comments Oh Ms Octavia Butler. She was ahead of her time. Columbine I learned so much that the media did not mention.

Great looking list, John.

The Road is just an awesome read; rather dark, but so good. I could read anything by Cormac McCarthy and be so happy.

message 11: by Ioana (new)

Ioana | 2127 comments Great list! Columbine, Hidden Valley Road and Parable of the Talents are all excellent, the first 2 not easy reads.
The others sound interesting too, I can't wait to read your reviews. Happy reading!

His writing is on another level entirely. I'm planning on rereading the Border Trilogy at some point. I don't think I fully appreciated it 20 years ago.

I think both of those are up soon since I've started both.

What a way to start a list. That is one of my all-time favorites.

How did you like it??

message 19: by John (new)

John (uneasyrhetoric) | 39 comments "Like." Isn't the right word exactly. I found it deeply sad and bleak, but hard to put down. I'm still thinking about it.

I feel you on that one. I loved the writing, but the story was as you said; sad and bleak. It settles into you.

Yes, it's an amazing book. I am thankful the Galvin sisters were willing to share their family's story. Glad you found it meaningful.
