The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle
Rating: 3 stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Although The Horror at Red Hook is not one of Lovecraft's best stories, and it is brewing over with hateful xenophobia and racism, I would still recommend reading it first in order to fully appreciate La Valle's story.

Brother Lemon for the win! This was a pretty wholesome and heartwarming read as far as demonic possession books goes, I even shed a few tears at the end over the two protagonists' loyalty towards each other and their friendship. It wasn't scary in a psychological sense, just a bit of body horror. Overall, an entertaining read, just not my type of horror book (I prefer heavier, emotional ones), which is why my rating is a 3. But would recommend if you want a blend of comedy and horror lite.

Dracul by Dacre Stoker and J.D. Barker
Just finished this today, wow!!! If anyone has any recommendations on what other works to try from J.D. Barker, I would greatly appreciate it :)

What Lies in the Woods
Started off interesting but rapidly went downhill and into utter ridonculus territory by the end.

Wonderland: A Thriller
Was not impressed. It's a story about a serial killer at an amusement park. How could you go wrong with a story like that? Well this one did. It seemed to be more about the sex lives and personal problems of the characters than any attempt at thrills.

That's too bad, the serial killer/amusement park angle did sound interesting.

I was a bit hesitant going in because of the low rating but I actually ended up enjoying this fun romp more than I thought! I can't believe it's a debut - will definitely be checking out more than this author in the future

The Damnation Game by Clive Barker
Rating: 4 stars

Filled with a lot of twists and turns! I thought I had it all figured out until the very end.

The Accursed by Joyce Carol Oates
Good Lord, what a novel! My brain is still reeling! I’ve been reading Joyce Carol Oates for nearly 40 years and this may very well be my single favorite book of hers. The story is practically impossible to summarize—“vampire novel set in early 20th century Princeton starring Woodrow Wilson, Upton Sinclair, and Jack London” doesn’t even begin to describe it. Enormously long, insanely ambitious, “The Accursed” is in my Top 5 Gothic novels of all time—and it’s only partly a Gothic novel, just as it’s only sort-of a vampire novel (which was how it was marketed). Not everyone will respond to Oates’s discursive plotting and ripe-bordering-on-overripe prose style, but for the right reader, this novel is just flabbergastingly good.
