Started How to Sell a Haunted House
Really meant to just read the first few pages and finally stopped 60 pages in. I was annoyed (by the brother) and creeped out (by the dolls). So far, so good.

I just finished it. It starts out a bit slow as it sets up the idea of the strangeness of the town... but most of the little stories are really good and one in particular just blew me away. It's worth reading.

It sounds similiar to Malerman's Goblin. It's a short story collection about the town of Goblin. I liked that one quite a bit, so I'll probably like this one too.

Starting Demonic by Jeff Strand.. the guy has the best covers, must be nice that his wife makes them all for him haha.

Demonic by Jeff Strand

Corey is falling in love with his co-worker Quinn. This is a problem. Not only because Quinn is married, but because her husband is a serial killer known as the Toledo Trasher, who has been forcing her to participate in his savage crimes.

With nothing but Quinn’s best interests in mind, Corey shows up at their home with a gun in his pocket and a knife in his hand.

Unfortunately, there are some very dark forces at work, and Corey makes Quinn’s situation worse than he could have ever imagined. And now things are about to get really, really bloody...

It's a favorite of mine, though I did find "In the Pines" and "Where the Summer Ends" a bit slow. "Sticks" is a long time favorite, my initial reading of which is what prompted me to buy the collection when it first came out. I'd urge you to read "River of Night's Dreaming" and "Beyond Any Measure" if nothing else.

Currently reading another old collection, Tomato Cain, and Other Stories by Nigel Kneale Tomato Cain, and Other Stories by Nigel Kneale. I'm only a few stories in and it looks like a mixed collection of s.f., horror and more mainstream stories.

This was Kneale's only published collection. He's best known as a screen writer for the BBC serials of Professor Quatermass' exploits (all later filmed by Hammer Studios), The Stone Tape (1972), The Year of the Sex Olympics (1968), The Woman in Black (1989) and other television productions, as well as some work on the movie Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

Randy Money | 432 comments Char wrote: "I never knew any of that, Randy! Hope you enjoy the stories as you get further into it."

Thanks, Char. I suspect I'll veer off after a few more stories so I don't get saturated, and because there's a novel I'm interested in starting.

message 197: by Char (new)

Char | 17459 comments I do the same, Randy. I like to use short stories as a sort of palate cleanser between novels. As a consequence, it takes me a long time to get through collections like that.

message 198: by Randy (new)

Randy Money | 432 comments Same here, Char. Infrequently I'll read straight through, sometimes to the detriment of my estimation of a collection. Right now, I'm also inching my way through The Life of Crime: Unravelling the mysteries of fiction’s favourite genre, a massive history of mystery (as the cover notes) so the Kneale is acting as a break-away from that, too.

You know, I try to read short-story collections between novels, but I find that I have to read the whole thing or I never finish it. If I stop reading a collection I often never go back to it. I lose momentum or something.

message 200: by Randy (new)

Randy Money | 432 comments Well ... yes. I have many collections and anthologies partly read.
