The lead in New Tricks, Amanda Redman, stars in Good Karma Hospital which we loved. We also think she looks a little like the actress who plays the lead cop in Candice Renoir.

Suzy (goodreadscomsuzy_hillard) | 702 comments We also liked 800 Words! Another favorite which we've watched twice is Detectorists. Took a while to get into it, but we ended up loving it, hence watching twice!

Laura | 4984 comments Detectorists was so funny! The scene where they had to find the mayor's gold chain... ROFLMAO

Finished season two of Deadwind; looking forward to season 3. It's just been binge-o-rama here as far as tv goes.

Finished Deadwind season 3. Thomas, many thanks for the recommendation. Sadly, the rumor is that there will not be a season 4. Gah!

We were going to watch The Chestnut Man (Netflix) but I realized we had to wait until I finished the novel (which I'm reading now). Until then, I'm watching Black Bird on Apple TV+, based on a true story.

I've watched all 4 seasons of that, it did drop in quality, but really enjoyed it at the beginning

I watched Happy Valley on PBS and liked it. I had to turn on the subtitles because of the accent. I mentioned this to Gr friends that I met in Yorkshire and they told that the accent in that part of Yorkshire is very strong, so much so that other people in Yorkshire have trouble understanding them.

Laura | 4984 comments Finished the Irish series Nowhere Fast, was a cute short 6 episodes, 25 minutes each. Was like the Derry Girls grew up, passed college, and still were making the same mistakes...was pretty funny.

On the first episode of the Australian series, Darby and Joan. A woman's husband is found dead in Australia, but he had told her he was in Spain. She goes to the place his body was found to find out what was going on. She runs into a retired cop... literally a crash...and the adventure goes from there. Liking it so far.

Back after 11 days of R&R, so we caught up on Alaska Daily. I hope there's a season two and that the show doesn't go the way of Three Pines. Also caught up with Will Trent, which I read is definitely going to have a season 2. Both on Hulu.

Christine Mathieu | 583 comments Netflix told us today that from end of September on they no longer send DVD's. In their letter they forgot to make people aware that there still is Netflix streaming, so we'll change from getting DVD's sent to streaming (but not all movies are available on streaming that's why we decided 8 or 10 years ago to get Netflix DVD's).

It's so much simpler with streaming only.

I have a friend who still gets DVDs from Nflix. They find so many more movies on DVD than are available from streaming and tv shows from platforms other than those they subscribe to. Makes me wish I had known about the DVD option!

message 84: by David (new)

David Crumm | 3 comments My wife and I have subscribed to Netflix since it began, and what's more astonishing than the "shut down" is that Netflix pretty much quit stocking its mailing centers with films some years ago. Or, at least, let the stock dwindle to a relative handful. When they started, they seemed to have everything we could possibly want. In the last couple of years, it's been hard to find DVDs we want to watch. We do make sure to subscribe to several carefully chosen streaming services that get us what we love and we'll stay with Netfllix, too. It was a sad day, yesterday, though.

More and more often I request DVD's from the public library that Netflix doesn't have.

Matthew | 88 comments I supplement my Netflix with the free ad-supported apps Tubi and Freevee. So, no shortage of movies and TV there! I will say, though, that there IS some overlap between the Tubi and Freevee inventories. Imdb.com is a great resource for trying to figure out what streamer something might be on.

Christine Mathieu | 583 comments Unfortunately "Rabbit Hole" with Kiefer Sutherland is on Paramount+ which has to be paid. That was the only TV series that would have interested me this year (so far).

This was a favorite show for me and now has marathons on some TV stations. It's about an F.B.I. agent who works with an eccentric scientist and his son to look into supernatural phenomena, like shape shifters and an alternate universe.

Stars Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Jasika Nicole

Laura | 4984 comments On ACORN-I started the South African series, Recipes for Love and Murder. I've only finished two episodes of this dark comedy, but I'm enjoying it so far. It focuses on a recipe columnist (with her own secret past) whose job gets cut, and she is reassigned to be the local advice columnist. Her first letter is from an abused wife stating her husband will kill her...and sure enough...she ends up dead. Won't give too much away, but that is just the first episode...we must wait to find out until the end of all 10!

I can't wait to see what happens!

Looking forward to watching the upcoming season four of True Detective (HBO), which may be and I quote," very loosely based on the mystery of the Dyatlov Pass, where nine hikers went missing and showed up dead scattered around their camping plot in Russia." I'd never heard of Dyatlov Pass until a few days ago, and I discovered a Russian miniseries (English subtitles) about it so I've been watching that for like an hour a day. It verges a bit on the woo-woo side, but still -- the basic facts are there. It's called Dead Mountain (2020):

Aditya | 2017 comments The Night Agent by Shawn Ryan – Ryan made my favorite TV series – The Shield and also the underrated The Chicago Code. This is not as good as either but it is still enjoyable. It is a pulpy spy series that reminded me of the weaker seasons of 24. It is binge worthy but don’t think too deeply about it or you might find the plot thin and some of the decisions taken by the characters illogical. Hacker Rose (Luciane Buchanan) barely escapes the assassins sent to kill her family who were undercover spies. Rose teams up with FBI agent Peter (Gabriel Basso) to uncover a conspiracy involving members of the White House. Is it credible that Rose decides to save the country singlehandedly rather than let the Washington power players know there is a mole in the White House? Rose and Peter’s flirting and the dangerous assassins’ relationship scream filler. The second half of the show picks up and kept me glued to the screen. It is TV version of a beach read, it is escapist entertainment done right. I will rather watch something like this rather than prestige TV drama like The Americans which I found boring. 7/10

We loved this one and hope they continue with a series based on book two. I enjoyed reading the book this was based on but thought at the time I might not like it if I hadn't seen the show first. Both are quirky in a good way!
