I'm currently on chapter 23 so I won't comment about content. This one was a little so going for me, the world building just isn't there in the beginning and I had a hard time caring about the characters. However, I heard there's a big twist in this book. I have my hunches but it makes me a lot more excited to finish it!

Enjoying so far. Have my theories about Cal's identity. We've also gotten a taste of Mate's power. World building needs some work--it's a little hard to envision. Wish there was a map. But all in all pretty happy with where this going.

I agree about the world building being a bit iffy (I'm on chapter 13 right now, so no content spoilers). So far I feel like the characters need to be developed more as well. I found the first 2-3 chapters to be quite slow, only after that did it start to get interesting in my opinion.

I also think that Emily is right, a map would be cool to help understand.

I like the characters, I agree about the world it's kind of hard to "see". I thought the scarlet guard was an interesting twist and the fact that the brother is in it. I'm looking forward to continuing tonight.

I went to the epics read book tour and I ask Victoria about the world building and she explains that it will be a lot more on the second book with a map and everything.

On chapter 6 right now. And I don't really know what else to say so far. I do have a theory about that one particular character...

I'm glad to know a map will be included.

Why did chapter 4 have to be so sad

The first 5 chapters have me interested enough to read more. Ugh the scene with her sister broke my heart though. My only complaint has been stated already the lack of world building, I can't seem to visualize this world.

It really bugged me when they blamed the hand thing on Mare. She didn't make her sister do that.

So far I found the book really interesting! I like that the book has humour, especially with Mare! I did find it hard to image the world, I am really glad that the next book will have map. I am not being too harsh on the world development because the author has another two books to write! I can't wait to see what happens next!

I'm interested and enjoying the story so far. I've already had a few "whoa" moments...awe poor sister and who is Cal? and her brother...OMG

My only problem with the first few chapters has already been said: not enough world building. But other than that I'm really enjoying this book. The relationship between Mare and her sister reminds me of Katniss and Prim, which is a good thing. The Scarlet Guard is very interesting. I also have my theory on a certain character'a identity... So far I'm really liking this book. I hope it keeps up or gets better as I read further.

I agree with what seems like everybody. The world building needs work and a map would defiantly be helpful, but I'm kind of having a problem with the world itself. Post-apocalyptic and mid-evil fantasy. Kinda weird. It's defiantly something I haven't seen before. I'm on chapter 9 now and I'm starting to get more invested in the story. Hopefully the pace will pick up soon.

I agree with everybody that the world is confusing, but I think some of the characters are a bit annoying. The scene with Gisa made me cry, I already love her brothers, even though we haven't seen much from them. Mare... I understand her but still not... Why put your sister in such a big risk? And Gisa, why steal when you know the law, and you know how important your hands are in this case? I don't know, I still feel it's not as good as people make it seem... :/

So happy that all of you seem to be enjoying this!! I'm FINALLY reading it!
So my thoughts - I definitely think it's really interesting do far. The first 5 chapters flew by for me, and I'm so happy I picked this up because this is totally the type of book I'm in the mood for! I'm really liking the set up so far and I'm so interested to learn more about the Silvers! Definitely interested to learn more about Cal and who he really is.. Also to find out more about Mare and her powers! Who else was freaking out when the silvers started turning in the reds?! They are definitely cold hearted people.. Poor poor Gisa.. Now Mare is going to have to figure out how to provide for her family! Super interested to learn more about her brothers involvement with the Scarlet Guard! Also about the war.. Its so sad that Mare's friend is going to have to leave... These people have terrible luck. I feel like a lot has already happened in these first few chapters! I haven't had as much trouble with the world building as some of you said, but I can understand where you all are coming from.. It's a little weird to hear about the Reds walking everywhere, living in the heat (so I assumed no AC), working so hard, and sometimes being in the dark, then to mention TVs and jets.. I was reading that and I was like, Oh! Okay, so they do have stuff like that... Just the reds don't have that stuff. I kept picturing the silvers as the Lunars (from The Lunar Chronicles) they are all so beautiful, yet cold and cruel, and almost not even human with magical abilities. No one else probably thought that.. I'm just weird. Haha excited to continue on!
