One gloomy night, a postman called Stephen is returning home with his dog Whippet, who is alerted to something hiding in a nearby hedgerow. As he soon discovers, Whippet appears to have found a small woman, except that it is the size of a five year old child and has grey eyes. Stephen decides to take her home and look after her - yet for some strange reason people don’t seem to be able to see her...
And so Theodora – the name Stephen gives her, since he isn’t able to find out her real name, lives in an enclosure with his second dog Brian as Stephen isn’t keen on allowing her into the house. Stephen observes the strange creature’s curious behaviour over time – she befriends Brian and seems to place him under a spell, and also befriends his four year old daughter Florence, managing to speak to her in an unknown language. Theodora also has an unusual singing voice unlike anything Stephen has heard before. Stephen realises that this must surely be a fairy – but despite trying to look after her, Theodora may prove to be too difficult for him to handle…
