Absolutely!

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1987 comments I just started Murder in the Aisle originally published by the author’s actual name Kris Pearson which was changed to Kristie Klewes for this series. Since she’s still publishing romance novels using her actual/original name I suppose it’s to point out the different genre. Which one should I use for this challenge in such a case?

I think it's fair to use either one since she actually uses both names. If you want to be super technical you could go with what's printed on the book you're reading. But this is for your FUN so really I don't mind either way.

Thank you! I was leaning to the one on the cover as well :-D

Melissa (ladybug) | 243 comments "Spell out PARTY POOPER" does this mean to spell it out in the title? or to spell it out by each book beginning with the letter?

Ex. "The Party Pooper of the 1st Grade" or

P: Pay
A: A Group
R...
T...
Y...

It's a spell out where you need one book per letter of the words PARTY POOPER.
You can use the first letter of a title (using or omitting the A/An or The), or the author's first or last initial for each letter of the spell out. A lot of people start the spell out but then change to one of the other options if they find a book that fits.

Sally906 | 338 comments Doing a spellout - you spelt energised with a Z - the American way - can I use an S instead of Z?

Hmmm. Marathons are supposed to be hard so I will have to say no. But there are lots of good Z options, like author Zane Grey or Zilpha Keatley Snyder to name just a couple. There is also Zoo or Zebra Forest or Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow or The Book Thief or The Shadow of the Wind or any on this list
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

You can do it!!

Yes absolutely!

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 805 comments We just got our thread so we're working on the first task. Just for clarification, we run the same race (task). Do we have to read the same book? If not, CAN we read the same one for the various tasks throughout when it works for us since we do a lot of buddy reads together?

message 113: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (last edited Aug 21, 2024 05:28PM) (new)

Erica | 4672 comments Mod
No, you don't have toread the same book. But yes, you absolutely may!

Oh, and yes - you each must read a book.

message 114: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 805 comments If we are doing a Spell It Out and we're doing a BR, can we each read the same book? For example, MISSED CHANCE. If we both read the same book that started with S or E, would that OK?

Yes that is fine.

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1987 comments Task: read a book with a character who is a restaurant chef (Marine Corps Marathon)
Would a pastry chef who owns and runs a pastry shop work here too?

message 117: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4672 comments Mod
Yes.

Sally906 | 338 comments For … Read a book where a character goes to or works at an expo…

Can a character going to an exposition (what expo is short for), world fair or trade fair be used?

They’re all sort of used to mean the same thing.

message 120: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4672 comments Mod
Yes!

message 121: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 805 comments Would this work for "character goes to or works at an expo"?

"On the night of October 4th, 1966, Val and I...attended the opening of Many Are Called at the Museum of Modern Art - the first exhibit of the portraits taken by Walker Evans in the late 1930s on the New York City subways with a hidden camera"

It's a bit of a stretch but sure. Marathons are painful but they needn't be torture...

message 124: by Agnieszka (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1987 comments For the task: read a book with the words No Way in the title or series name would a book with not instead of no work too - I was thinking of It's Not Supposed to Be This Way: Finding Unexpected Strength When Disappointments Leave You Shattered.

I wanted to check in case it works for you before I go for the spell-out option :-D

I think that is acceptable. Marathoners sometimes need to improvise!

Yay! Thank you. In that case I'll start it tonight or tomorrow :-D

message 127: by Agnieszka (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1987 comments Task: read a book where shoelaces are mentioned

1. Would it work if bootlaces or a single shoelace are mentioned?

Would a book with any of the following quotes work:
2. Ian frozen, midway through tying his laces into a bow
3. Most shoes had something wrong with them (...) the laces had gone missing...
4. She snapped to attention and flutter-kicked until she could barely bend to tie her shoes.

How about the mention of the MC wearing
5. lace-up boots
6. lace up shoes

If none of those work it's fine. I have two where shoelaces are mentioned (though doubt I get to them in the next month and I love spell-outs if I'm too slow to get to those that would fit for sure :-D

1, 2 and 3 will work because you get the "shoe" part through context.
